The Last Trace

Rate this book
The Tasmanian Devil. The Executioner. Killer of Chosen.

But before Taz bore any of those names, he was an easy-going fur trapper who dreamed of sailing across the sea and visiting faraway lands . . .

Trace Pierre Tasman’s simple life as a mountain man in 1842 Montana takes a bizarre twist after a visit to his mother’s Cree village. He’d dismissed his relatives’ superstitious gossip about a “she-demon” haunting the mountains, but when he senses something stalking him, he begins to fear that perhaps he should have heeded their warnings.

Angelique has been alone a long time. When she fled her native France for the desolate mountains of the Canadian Territories, she had only one goal—to put as much distance as possible between her and her depraved sire. But now loneliness is her greatest enemy, and she longs for someone with whom she can share her eternity.

When Trace happens upon Angelique one evening in the forest, his concern for the bedraggled but beautiful woman dissolves into terror as she attacks and nearly kills him. Night after night she hunts him, and their violent encounters turn Trace’s existence into a living nightmare.

Yet the insatiable desire Angelique ignites in him overshadows his dread of her brutal attacks, and as Trace’s attraction to her grows, he fears her love for him is only a prelude to his death.

The Last Trace is a novella introducing a key player from the WORLD OF THE CHOSEN, a series focused on the individuals within a secret society of powerful blood-drinkers whose violent struggles for dominance in 'The Game' threatens to spill out into the human realm.

This story contains graphic violence, trauma, and hunting scenes.

Roh Morgon discovered the magic in stories at an early age, both in books and the ones she made up in her head. As a child growing up in a remote Southern California canyon, she explored the wild hills barefoot with her brothers and rode her horse bareback at top speed. A wicked youth spent hitchhiking across the West and perched on the backs of Harleys eventually gave way to soccer mom duties and full-time college studies—at the same time. In her spare moments, she learned how to herd cattle, swordfight, and plant an arrow or a knife in a target—not necessarily at the same time.

Her years spent in the lofty mountains of Colorado and the stark plains of Wyoming, the red canyons of central Arizona and the rolling hills of California, provide some of the diverse stages upon which her characters re-enact their lives.

She’s best known for her vampire series which includes Watcher: Book I of The Chosen, the 1840s historical horror novella, The Last Trace, and The Games Monsters Play. Her next novel, Runner: Book II of The Chosen, will be released in late 2017.

Roh currently shares her home in the Sierra Nevada foothills with three mustang horses, two crazy herding dogs, and a very patient husband who reminds her of the need to eat and sleep. She writes fantasy and urban fantasy for middle grade, young adult, and adult readers.

The Last Trace was my first venture in author Roh Morgon's books. A novella, it was a quick read because it's a smaller work and because Ms. Morgon drew this reader into the story from the beginning and it was hard to put down.

As a fan of vampires, I liked that this story had some unique aspects to it, it wasn't the cliche vampire tale, which always makes it more fun and interesting to read. Also a fan of historical fiction, I loved the setting in the mid-1800's west, the character of Trace, being half native American and half white, and how he lived in combined cultures, all the while being stalked by a French demon.

The Last Trace is one in THE CHOSEN novellas series. I'm looking forward to the next, Without A Trace.

I enjoyed the novella THE LAST TRACE. I don't read a lot of vampire romance, but I love dark historical fiction and this story fit into that category, so I gave it a read and was not disappointed. The author's detailed research of Native American history shined through in the story without overwhelming it. The landscape and character descriptions were also well done, I could picture each individual and their actions clearly in my mind. I thought the end was just slightly predictable, but overall it was a great read for an historical fiction vampire romance, and I highly recommend it if you're a fan of the genre.
