This was my second read by White (the first was The Resurrectionist) and it wasn’t the hardcore horror that I expect from him. I mean, just look at that horrifying cover. Wowza!! Skinzz is story about friendship, racism, family and overcoming life’s obstacles.

It’s set in Philly during the 1980’s punk/ Nazi rivalry. I really liked how the city, which happens to be where I was born and raised, was also a character. You could really visualize all the landmarks of Philly, smell the food, feel the grittiness of the city.

So, on to the plot. It follows two groups of teenagers, each one affiliated with one of those groups. The MC for the punks is a badass African American kid named Mack. I loved his relationship with his mom. There was real depth to the character development, something I didn’t think I’d find in one of Wrath’s books.

There were some brutal fight and torture scenes but nothing too extreme. I think if you’re interested in trying one of Wrath’s books this would be a good one to start with. I really enjoyed it.

I put off reading this book for a long time because I thought it was just gonna be a bunch of Nazi torture porn. Once I finally decided to read it I quickly realized that this book was much more than that.

Skinzz by Wrath James is a harrowing story about racism, rebellion, loss, friendship, loyalty and much more.

I'd argue that this is Wrath James Whites best work and if they ever made this into a movie it would go down as one of the greatest dramas ever made.

“The wind sounded sad and angry, violent, like a tortured spirit raging against existence." -Skinzz, by Wrath James White

One does not open a WJW book and expect safety and warmth. His words are as passionate as they are violent, as beautiful as they are unflinchingly brutal. Skinzz is my second read from this author; I started with If You Died Tomorrow I Would Eat Your Corpse, an extreme horror collection of poetry and prose. While the collection leans more towards White's more extreme writing, it still has similarities with Skinzz. Both are personal explorations of life and love; one focused more on young life and love, the other on the experiences of what could be that same man all grown up.

Don't misunderstand, this is very much a book about smashing skinheads and and living life right at the edge of destruction. Mack is a young black man known for his fighting prowess and propensity to look for fights with white supremacists and anyone else who threatens his circle of friends. With his best friend, Jason, he continues to spiral deeper and deeper into a situation that requires increasing levels of violence to stay alive. White is very skilled at ramping up the action and there are spectacular fight scenes. This should come as no surprise given the author's history as a professional fighter.

Furthermore, there are multiple scenes that will be difficult for readers to experience. If you consider picking this up and have a desire for specific content warnings, please feel free to ask. Readers should expect language and extreme scenes of murder and violence towards the black and the LGBT community - this is not a spoiler. I will freely admit that the chapters written from the POV of the skinheads are some of the hardest I've had to read. Think of the curb scene from American History X and that's getting close.

As I mentioned in the beginning, running through all of this is a story of friendship, love, and struggle. It may not be a scene or situation I can relate to, but the humanity is there. The rawness of emotion is tangible and important. While this book may not work for every reader, I certainly intend to seek out more of White's work. Tread carefully with this one, it pulls no punches.

Just wow...... This book was not at all what I expected it to be especially coming from Wrath James White. I was expecting blood, guts, and gore but what I got was a fucking amazing story about racism, love, hate ,loss ,loyalty, friendship and much more. This book is gritty, raw, brutal and just real. This would be mind blowing as a movie. This book is definitely one of my favorite reads this year so far. Just awesome

Just finished Skinzz by Wrath James White. It was an amazing story and a great book to read for black history month!

The story is about Mack, a six foot plus monster of a man! He goes to concerts kicking Skinhead’s asses and pulverizing nazi scum like nobody’s business! The story also follows a group of kids that are part of a movement developed by a band called The Unrest. They do terrible acts, like torching an old black lady alive in the subway! Their racist movement leads Mack and his friend Demon to learn that beating up skinheads isn’t enough. They might have to kill in order to bring peace to their ghetto.

I give this story a solid five stars for it’s amazing narrative! The characters were great and the setting was cool! I overall loved this book. Mack is one of my favorite flawed, but badass fictional characters I’ve read about since RJ from Knuckle Supper! I enjoyed this book a lot and would recommended Wrath James White to anyone looking for an ass kicking book about racism.

Why oh why did it take me so long to read a Wrath James White book?
I loved this from the very first page. The fight scenes were written particularly well, so well that you could almost hear the impact of broken bones jumping off the page.
I definitely be checking out more from Wrath and I highly recommend this book to anyone else who plans on doing the same.

This was a gritty, candid, and brutal read. While the plot’s primary focus was to shine a light on racism and the cyclic nature of hatred, it ended up being just as much about friendship. Wrath James White is a solid writer, and an even more talented storyteller. He manages to pack such a short work of fiction to the brim with social commentary, entertaining action sequences, and fleshed out character development. Although White is known as a hardcore horror author, he really did a great job creating a grounded and dark slice of life story. While the fight scenes were very well written and graphic, my favorite parts of this book were the sections that focused on the characters’ internal struggles, as well as the various relationships we see unfold. I really felt for these characters, despite only having known them for two to three hours. That being said, you can definitely tell that White is comfortable writing boundary pushing horror, as the passages of violence here are quite bleak and vile. Two particular sections of racially motivated torture will stick with me for quite some time. These scenes are almost as hard hitting as the unpleasant, but candid and very well done dialogue. From a storytelling and writing standpoint, this is an easy 4.5 stars. However, the editing here was rather poor. Consistently misspelled words, extra punctuation marks, and switching the names of key characters by mistake during a rather heartfelt moment really hampered my enjoyment by the end. Another small but noteworthy complaint has to do with the marketing. Given that this author is known for extreme horror, the shocking and very well done cover art for the paperback only adds to the notion that similar deeds will take place in the actual story. While the subject matter and some of the violence here is absolutely horrific, the act depicted on the standard paperback’s cover is far more outlandish and ghastly than anything else in the book. But overall, I was pleasantly surprised by SKINZZ, and am glad it was my introduction to Wrath James White. He is a great author, and I can only imagine how well realized his extreme horror books are. I give this a very strong 3.5 out of 5 stars, rounded up to 4 on Goodreads. Check it out if you’re in the mood for a fast paced coming of age story with some grisly moments. Be warned that the language here is very extreme, so tread with caution if you feel that you might be too offended to enjoy the actual story. I can’t wait to check out more of Wrath James White’s work.

Wow, this one was awesome!

I'm excited to read more Wrath James White books in the future. He may have a more simplistic prose style ala Richard Laymon, but he more than makes up for it with added details and character descriptions and actions. The characters in this are really well done with their dialogue and descriptions to the point that they felt like real people I've met before and called my friends.

This story revolves around punks in the 80's and their war against nazis. We have Mack and Jason, two young best friends in the middle of it all trying to transition into adults instead of spending their lives fighting nazis and partying (sounds like a pretty cool life to me, but I suppose it doesn't quite pay the bills).

We also get glimpses into the world of a young racist, Little Davey, as he goes out of his way to murder any non-straights and non-whites, much to the chagrin of his friends. The hate crime scenes are extreme and hard to get through, but there are mercifully more instances of skinheads getting messed up, thankfully.

Obviously, at some point, everything comes to a bloody head. But before all that we got a very compelling and interesting drama. Mack is a muscley, badass 19-year-old, black kid who I think most people would love to have as a best friend after going on the journey of reading Skinzz.

The relationship between, him, his best friend Demon (Jason) and other punks here and there is really well-done, and I love Mack's love interest Miranda as she's my "literally me" character in the book. I think Mack and Jason's relationship in this book is probably one of the best written male friendships I've read since Wee Hughie and Billy Butcher in the "The Boys" graphic novel.

The only thing I would change personally is that maybe the ending could have used more clarity. Without spoiling it, maybe the ending is a bit more realistic with its ambiguity? I suppose it's not hard to predict what would probably happen to the character we read about on the last page.

I didn't time it this way on purpose, but this book feels appropriate for Black History Month.

Edit: I'm sorry, but I'm gonna have to be honest. After letting it digest in my brain for awhile, I realized that no amount of mental gymnastics can save the fact that the ending of this book really sucks. I'm gonna have to give this a star penalty for that.

As to be expected Wrath James White has done it again with his novel Skinzz. He has crafted a masterpiece of modern horror as seen through the eyes of a small band of punk rockers as they live and die on the streets of Philadelphia. As they struggle against boredom, poverty and skinheads. Yet, this novel is far more then horror, this novel is distilled life in a couple of hundred pages. It is angst, hatred, pain and hope smashed into the pages as the characters chisel out their existence.

A semi-Autobiograpical novel it is hard to tell were the fiction starts and the truth ends. As anyone who lived through the 80's in the punk rock scene knows what it was like and Wrath has opened deep wounds for those whom may have wanted to forget some of the horrors of their teenage years. (Drugs, love, violence...)

Mack (obviously Wrath in fiction form) and his best friend take no crap from these skinheads and after beating a good number of them in the streets they become targeted by the skinhead community. Meanwhile Davey and his merry band of racists have declared a war of their own as they attack and brutally kill several people.

Each and every moment collides towards a climax, a clashing of ideologies.

Wrath is easily one of horrors masters of story telling. Once you pick this book up it will be impossible to put down. Some have said this novel lacks the edge and violence of his early works, but I disagree. His earlier works are pure fiction, whereas this is to a great extent is reality; hardcore reality. Making the violence in this all the more powerful. This novel shows that Wrath is not just about cannibals, sex, mutilation and gore. He is human, very human and this novel is an ode to the pains and trials we may go through in life when our ideas make us act without thinking of the bigger picture.

This made me remember why I wore my mohawk with pride, why I stood up to the racists that brought their misinformed ideas with knives and violence.

Thank you Wrath for the memories. They should never be forgotten.

Amazing

I really enjoyed this book. It was relatable and easy to read. The storyline was a good solid foundation of trust between two friends going through a time when punks, skinheads etc all fought for their own beliefs. These two friends each with their own personal lives at home but the same beliefs and values. Two found men just into adulthood with a strong intense bond of friendship that bleeps them together as their lives are put through so many tests and extreme situations with wars with other groups. The era where punks, and skin head etc all fought against each other with racist and violent endings. But there's always someone whom goes too far. This story was so relatable as I remember hearing all about wars between gangs and punks and skins etc as a young teen. The stories you heard etc. This was just the same only you were reading and being part of it from Mack and Jason's points of view. A fascinating story that really is worth reading. Definitely recommend

I didn't really expect to get into this one very well because I can't really relate to punks, skinheads, or the time it was set during. And the premise of the book didn't really appeal to me, despite that it hooked me right from the beginning and I couldn't put it down. The building tension was very well written and kept me reading. The only reason I didn't give it the fifth star is because I was a bit disappointed with the ending. it was good, but it left us hanging one one thing and also didn't have a suprise twist ending that I have come to expect from wrath James white. No one writes a sucker punch suprise twist ending like wrath and this one felt like it was leading up to one but sadly it wasn't.

This was my first time reading Wrath James White, I have no idea why I waited so long. Though this wasnt the hardcore horror I was expecting from him, this was a really good book. Not being extreme horror at all, I was kind of surprised that Deadite Press put this out.
Regardless, I enjoyed White's writing here, it's an entertaining story with real characters with real emotions, dealing with some bad situations.

It’s 1988 in Philadelphia and a war is going on. There are two groups that have extreme hatred for each other, the punkrockers and the skinheads. The skinhead group, known as The Unrest, is extremely racist and despises anyone that isn’t the pure Aryan race. Mack and Jason are part of the punk rock scene and love fighting the skinheads. They take great pleasure in drawing blood and causing them pain. Little Davey and his crew, who are part of The Unrest, hate the “lesser races” and also love causing pain and harming anyone they deem inferior. When one of the punkrocker girls,Miranda, gets beaten so badly she ends up in a coma, that’s when things take a turn for the worse. Soon little Davey and his gang become much more violent and fueled with more hatred, that they begin hurting innocent people to get their point across. Mack and Jason realize that fighting will not be enough to stop the skinheads, they will have to kill them if they want any kind of resolution.

I’ve heard lots of things about Wrath James White’s writing, so I thought I was prepared for what this book would entail, I was wrong. This is an extremely hard book to read, not because it’s hard to understand, but more because it is so upsetting. This book is violent and graphic in more ways than one. The fight scenes between the punkrockers and the skinheads were descriptive, but it wasn’t the gore and blood that was upsetting. It’s the reason for the hatred, the fact that the skinheads can’t see past a skin color and that’s the hard pill to swallow.
The part I had the hardest time with is the chapters in the perspective of Little Davey and his crew. It’s so vile and dark and just not easy to read. I honestly thought I would be more turned off by the amount of detailed gore, and I was, but only when it was by Little Davey and his crew because of the intent in which the blood is being shed.
The language is very explicit, there are many slurs used within the book towards Black people, Hispanic people, and people of the LGBTQ+ community. There are also physical attacks towards people of those same communities as well, so be warned.
Also, there is a scene that involves animal torture and they do discuss animal torture a few times.
The scenes where Little Davey tortures other people is just gruesome and horrendous.
This book is very realistic, this isn’t about ghosts or vampires, this is about racism and how awful people truly are. I think because of the things that are happening currently, it’s a really fitting read.
I think this book does what it was meant to do well, it gets the point across and it made me feel uncomfortable, which is a good thing. I don’t think anyone should feel comfortable while reading this book.
Just be wary when going to read this book, it’s disturbing and I can only imagine how triggering it could be to many people. Just be careful if you decide to read it.
I’m very interested in reading more from Wrath James White, but I think I might give myself a moment to recover from this one first, then I’ll jump into another one.

When skinheads and punk rock groups start to get violent, change is in the air. Miranda, a punk rock girl gets seriously hurt in one of the fights. And the skinhead group is getting more and more violent.

This story was absolutely wild. All of the hate crime and violence in this story had my jaw on the floor. Just like all of Wraths stuff had a great heartbreaking but necessary message. Everything about the writing and characters was done beautifully another great story by Wrath!!

Wrath James White, author of this novel, has firsthand experience growing up as a young African American punk during this time. Skinzz has a semi-autobiographical feel that adds to the depth and growing tension throughout this exceptional novel.

Mack and Jason live to fight. They live to fight The Unrest, a local group of neo-Nazi skinheads in Phillie’s legendary South Street. It is the late 1980s and tensions are ramping up. Little Davey, a member of The Unrest, is out on a rampage trying to stoke the flames of an all-out race war. Committing random acts of violence and murder, Little Davey and his crew of scumbags make their way to getting what they want. Meanwhile, Mack and Jason deal with events that inadvertently add to the growing tension that will soon come to a head.

Wrath James White always manages to sneak in deeper meaning with every tale he spins, regardless of how deep it is into the bizarre or horrific. With Skinzz, he manages to tell a profoundly heartfelt and panic inducing story. As the tensions rise and boil over, the emotional toll is almost too much to take. This isn’t your typical horror yarn, technically this isn’t even horror. The drama and realism are very horrific and these monsters and boogeymen are the real deal that people experience on a daily basis.

The story reminds me of a Wrath James White version of Penelope Spheeris’ Suburbia. The punk rock lifestyle has a realism that can only come from experience. It is a very true feeling tale that could fit right in with Spheeris’ other notorious work, The Decline of Western Civilization. As mentioned earlier, this has an autobiographical feel to it. At times, it feels that we are reading journal entries from a young White dealing with the racial tensions of the 80s hardcore scene.

This isn’t just a book about the punk scene and the racial tension of Phillie, it also has plenty of the violence and humor you would expect from White. There is plenty of graphic gore and violence in between emotional heft.

Skinzz is a magnificent novel. This is easily my favorite Wrath James White novel to date. I am a little biased. Growing up a Hispanic punker, this novel spoke volumes to me. If you are looking for something a little outside the horror genre, this is the perfect place to go. There is a 80s exploitation feel, a la Surf Nazis Must Die, but with a better premise and better writing.

OK, before I write any kind of review, some background, I was a Philly punker in this time frame, so, this book had the potential to not only miss the mark, but outright offend if it strayed from the reality of things too far. It doesn't. There's only a little exaggeration to make room for a story, but only a little. If you were one of the boys and girls that made up the Philly punk scene during that era, you knew one thing for certain, a war was going on. If you, or one of your friends didn't leave a show via ambulance at least once you were a pedestrian, and good for you, you probably sleep better now for it. Before the group that is fictionalized in this group took over, it was AC Skins and Sinn Fein Skins and City Gardens was theirs and you risked your ass going there,there were incursions into Philly, but the war was to keep them out. I myself went down to a set up jumping at a Murphy's Law show that ended up becoming a total warzone that started when I got pushed over the guy hiding behind me knees to trip me.
This is Wrath James White at his most real, and I've never enjoyed him more, and I know it's real because I've seen it myself. Bravo, very well done.

Fast paced and raw. Packed with emotion and violence, this semi autobiographical account shines a light on a sliver of time encapsulated from the author's life blended heavily with fiction. Punk Rockers and Skinheads clash in 1988 Philadelphia and Camden. Like the author's other books, the violence bleeds off of the page, and it moves lightening fast clip, like a Doc Marten smashing down on your head. This book pulls no punches. The "horror" here is all too real. The horror of hate, violence, and mindless obedience to a cause that its followers don't even fully understand, Skinzz is a timeless tales of friendship, honor, fighting for what you believe. That and a ton of violence mixed in.

I also need to share that while reading this I was rocketed back in time to when I used to frequent L'Amour in Brooklyn, and all sides of these subcultures up close. Thank you Wrath, for another thrilling ride.

I love WJW and his thoughtful writing. This book however did not connect with me. Other reviews praise it for its insight and lack of gratuitous violence. I felt just the opposite. I struggled to read this and the depictions of race violence bothered me greatly. Maybe I found my line in extreme horror. I prefer my gratuitous violence with less race war. Congrats to WJW for tackling a very tough subject.

Wrath James White's Skinzz takes us on a journey into the punk and skinhead scene of the late 1980s. Into the gritty, blood-soaked streets of Philly.

My first exposure to this violent clash between punks and neo-nazis was 2015's Green Room--but Wrath's book does a much better job fleshing out these characters and conflicts and bringing this seedy underworld to life.

Neo-nazis easily slip into caricature, but Wrath depicts them as real people whose minds were warped by racist families who have been inheriting generations of hate. The punks are also depicted as flesh and blood; lost souls who are rebellious against an oppressive system...but who are losing their lives to alcoholism and drug abuse and whose futures might be cut short because of their violent clashes with the skinheads.

This is such an important piece of work in a time when more and more young men are being radicalized by neo-nazi ideologies. It brings to life a dark reality. The ending is both disturbing and heart-wrenching. An excellent piece of work.

I'm a huge fan of the 1980s punk scene, so this book by Wrath James White instantly caught my attention. A short novel, Skinzz is a story of friendship, violence, punk rock, racism, and beating up nazis. While Wrath is a horror writer, Skinzz isn't what I'd necessarily call a standard "horror" novel. The horror of the story is depicted in the racism and learned hatred passed down through the generations that the main characters endure. There are also several very violent scenes of torture and street fights. Without giving spoilers, the ending angered me, but it was very effective and did what it was supposed to do. In short, a very good, powerful read.

Wrath James White is an anomaly in the world of horror. In a genre of fiction dominated by the melanin challenged, Wrath is a black dude who writes some of the most gruesome horror fiction that would make a death metal band blush in shame. This is the first book of his I have ever read, and I can see why he is gaining a cult following. Skinzz is a brutal book, and at first glance, this seems like nothing but torture porn.

If punk rock is your jam, then you should check out Skinzz by Wrath James White. He has perfectly crafted a short read that takes us back to the days of Philly’s dying hardcore scene. Never skips a beat with the music references and the emotional buildup is fierce and in your face. Others claim that this is a cross between Warriors and Decline of Western Civilization, but even those cinematic masterpieces can’t fully describe how heavy this is. WJW doesn’t fuck around with Skinzz; made me feel like I was slamming alongside Mack & Demon.

A violent look at the hardcore scene in the 80s

Go through the punk rock scene of the 80s with Mack as he stomps skinheads and tries to live through the violence of Philadelphia with his punk friend, Demon. This book has moments of serious brutality, but tenderness as well. Definitely a 5 star read for me.

Loved the build up of this one. I felt the ending was a bit rushed, but not enough to knock it down a star. Wrath James White is a fantastic writer and I look forward to reading more of his work in the near future!

As a fan of punksploitation, hardcore horror, and nazis getting their shit fucked up, I thought I'd love this. Unfortunately it wasn't for me. Glad others dig it though.

I had problems with its inaccurate depiction of the 80s punk scene due to a lack of research.
I wanted to love this more than I could.
Would've given it 5 stars if not for the mistakes.
