The Accursed Kings #1-6

Regii blestemati

Rate this book
(George R.R. Martin)

Maurice Druon was born in Paris. He is the nephew of the writer Joseph Kessel, with whom he wrote the Chant des Partisans, which, with music composed by Anna Marly, was used as an anthem by the French Resistance during the Second World War.

In 1948 he received the Prix Goncourt for his novel Les grandes familles. On December 8, 1966, he was elected to the 30th seat of the Académie française, succeeding Georges Duhamel.

While his scholarly writing earned him a seat at the Académie, he is best known for a series of seven historical novels published in the 1950s under the title Les Rois Maudits (The Accursed Kings).

He was Minister of Cultural Affairs in 1973 and 1974 in Pierre Messmer's cabinet, and a deputy of Paris from 1978 to 1981.

By the end of 1314 the prediction of the king's death had been fulfilled and will continue to be fulfilled through diseases, conspiracies, poisonings and any other means 13 generations. Until the Hundred Years' War.
This is just one of the plans of the books, the "royal" that changes from volume to volume, but there are also "steady" stories such as a beautiful love story or the dramatic and fabulous story of Robert III, Count of Artois whose domain was stolen by his aunt, Mahaut de Artois, for in those troubled times it was not uncommon for an uncle or grandfather to die from his grandchildren, and as a result of such an incident the father of the unjust count dies first and he is not a minor. he can claim the domain, which he will return to his despotic aunt, with whom he will fight in all legislative ways and not only for 20 years.
All the characters and facts are real but as amazing as pure fiction!

I found it fascinating, especially since the series are based on true events from the XIVth century. The life of royalties, the schemes, intrigues in court always seemed out of this world to me, and this series confirms that life beats the movie. I gave it 4 stars because there are parts (books) that I found less captivating, but overall is a great read.

Historical tale set in France by the end of the strongest king of all, through the minds of a naive, love-prone son of an italian banker, and a flamboyant, profligate baron filled with desires of revenge.

As if written by a professional historian, the author's heavy, exact writing style does little to exaust the reader's excitement throughout this action-filled multi-dynastic drama.

Grotesque lords, calculating politicians, child murder and kinslaying, this story has obviously inspired, be it indirectly, much of George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire's main caracters and plots.
