With over 1.6 million books sold, Joanna Weaver is known for her transparent and life-changing books, Having A Mary Heart in a Martha World, Having a Mary Spirit, Lazarus Awakening, At the Feet of Jesus and her new book, Embracing Trust. Her podcast, "The Living Room with Joanna Weaver" was featured in Apple's New & Noteworthy. Joanna is passionate about seeing women experience all that God has for them - especially the joy and freedom that comes from trusting Him.
Joanna Weaver, pastor’s wife and bestselling author of “Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World,” writes about intimacy with God in her new book, “At the Feet of Jesus.” The easy-to-use, 365-day devotional encourages readers to start each day “…at the feet of Jesus…”
For most of us finding time to do that is challenging and it’s a challenge Joanna admits she shares. Even though we have more labor-saving devices than ever, our lives are busier. The distracting schedules and responsibilities of children, family, church and business keep families busy and tired, eager to fall into bed at night.
Yet deep down inside, many of us, like Joanna, feel our “…spirits long for time with the Lord…” in spite of life’s demands. And that is the focus of her new devotional book, where she notes it’s all about “choices and priorities” that lead to meaningful times with the Lord and ultimate “personal application.”
Just as Mary made the choice to sit at the feet of Jesus while her sister Martha remained busy working for the Lord in the kitchen, readers must make a similar choice. Because that’s “…where it all begins…”
Joanna’s devotions make it an easy choice for readers who prioritize time for the Lord. The brief, one-page devotions…Full Review: http://tinyurl.com/8d62dqh
Title: AT THE FEET OF JESUS Author: Joanna Weaver Publisher: Waterbrook Press October 2012 ISBN: 978-0-307-73100-5 Genre: Devotions
You were made for more than serving God: you were made to know Him
Intimacy with God—to know Him and to be known by Him. It is what my heart desperately needs, probably yours as well, but life seems to conspire to keep us busy and distracted.
If you struggle when it comes to having daily devotions, then Ms. Weaver’s AT THE FEET OF JESUS invites you to set aside your duties and find the amazing peace and incredible joy that comes from time alone with Him.
This devotional is drawn from Ms. Weaver’s beloved Bethany Trilogy and includes 365 days, a Bible reading passage (you can use whatever version you desire), and reflection question. There are also ‘sidebars’ woven through-out the book inviting you to Go Deeper.
This devotional includes a unique one-year Bible reading guide.
I love devotionals, and as I started reading through this devotional, with my Bible in hand, I imagined throwing myself at the feet of Jesus, and washing His feet with my hair like Mary Magdalene did. Each devotional starts with a short verse, which is written out, then the devotional, then a portion of scripture for you to look up in your Bible and read, then a thought for you to consider as you go about your day. For example for October 26, the day this review is posting on my blog, the question to consider is: “What qualities does God promise to work in your life in the midst of your difficulties?” If you want to put serious study into this, I recommend keeping a pen and notebook on hand to write down God’s promises, and your thoughts as you consider this.
On the downside: As I said before, the material is drawn from her earlier books. Some of the devotions are confusing if you don't know what she's referring to. To illustrate this, on February 20 she writes "Here are several ways you can beat the downward spiral of the Deadly D's in your life..." It doesn’t explain what the Deadly D’s are. You would have to read one of her other books to know what she’s referring to. I recommend you have her prior books on hand for reference purposes. Beautiful hardcover edition, perfect for gift giving. $15.99. 391 pages.
Too often the devotionals that are for sale these days are on the light and fluffy side. This one is not. Joanna Weaver has compiled a wonderful, page-per-date devotional that has you At The Feet Of Jesus for a year.
Each day begins with a verse and is followed by a devotional challenge that is a snippet from one of her books. The hope is that it will nurture a "Mary Heart" within you as you turn to a specific passage in your own Bible. Each day concludes with a reflective question that will help you in applying what you just read and learned. Every once in a while there will be a page called "Going Deeper" that give your practical tips on how to dig deeper into the Word.
The Readability
Not only is it an easy reading book, but it's also got the feel of sitting down for a chat with a friend.
The Highlights
I like the format of this book. It's simple, not too long, but not too short either, and is easy to use and learn from while also being full of challenge.
The Downside
It's only one year long. :-(
The Recommendation
I highly suggest women of all ages read and use this book for their personal daily time with God. It's a great book for teens girls, too.
I love daily devotional books; have several of them. I rotate them among years and, if not written by date, I pick a different starting page each time. I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Joanna Weaver is a Christian writer and has three excellent books and other writings. I highly recommend this daily devotional.
Very best devotional I have EVER done! It is so excellent that I have done this same devotional every night for the past 6 years. Joanna Weaver knows how to write that really makes you think and her daily topics pertain to anything and everything that women go thru in life!
I used this book and the companion reading guide included at the end to read through the Bible in a year. Joanna' s writing is inspired, powerful, beautiful, and thought-provoking.
I enjoy Weaver’s book and enjoyed this devotional book just as much. Her words are genuine and real - they challenge and they encourage. I have enjoyed my year beginning each day with this book.
Deep padded with an image that brings the reader in as if suddenly surrounded in an intimate, quite setting, "At the Feet of Jesus" Daily Devotions to Nurture a Mary Heart",is a well thought out devotional that encourages Christian women to have a deeper, more grounded walk as a Christian.
There is a quiet encouragement to focus on doing less and hearing more as each day, topics of faith, encouragement and challenge is shared.
Although the year is almost over, as I write this review, going through this devotional book, had me thinking, this is the book to start the new year as I marvel at the words that are shared each day.
It was difficult to put this devotional down as Joanna weaves, historical information to tie in with each day's writing, relevant readings and questions to reflect on, while all the while, encourage like wind chimes, softly blowing in the wind, to move forward in and through Christ and to look forward and hear His words.
My first thoughts was....this is the type of book I want to give to someone as a gift. The words are woven beautifully and it really motivates the start the day at His feet, listening to His words, as Mary did, instead of being distracted by the busyness and often, loudness that life can bring in our lives.
"At the Feet of Jesus" Daily Devotions to Nurture a Mary Heart" reminded me more than just a daily devotional book, but that much needed "pick me up song" that gently but firmly guides the reader forward and I enjoy just the visual beauty of the book; A hardcover that is padded and promises to be a future family heritage to be passed down through each generation.
The added Bible Plan is a great reminder to spend each day in His word, not just in bits and pieces, but in all of His word and works as a plan for those who are trying to read through the Bible and really have His word more as a basis in one's life.
Joanna's words speaks to each of us when she shares, "Our heart desperately needs this intimate connection, but often life keeps us too busy and distracted with responsibilities to develop a devoted time of worship."
This book, "At the Feet of Jesus" Daily Devotions to Nurture a Mary Heart" calls out for us to slow down and not just read His word, but to take life a little slower and it really inspired me and hopefully to whomever else reads this devotional, each day, to do the same thing in their lives.
There is the added plus, as all our lives are not cookie cutter, but each intricately unique and special in their own ways, that if the bible reading plan offered in the book doesn't fit our lives, we can go to her website, for a personalize plan that we can then download and keep in our bibles or wherever is most convenient for us.
I am very impressed by the layout of, "At the Feet of Jesus" Daily Devotions to Nurture a Mary Heart"; Filled with personal ancedotes, and the paper is printed on a coarse resume paper quality that makes the words really stand out and the paper just feel all the more richer.
I feel like I'm not reading a book that was just printed, but a book that has a soft, warmth, home filled, inviting feel to the writing that is casual, conversational and yet rich in His word.
This is the type of devotional book, I would email, post, encourage and even get for friends and loved ones to have as well, to work through each day and be uplifted and inspired.
"At the Feet of Jesus" Daily Devotions to Nurture a Mary Heart" really stands out as a devotional book and its the type that even though, I read through to get a "feel" of the book for the review, it doesn't read like a devotional book though it is a devotional book, if that makes any sense.
It's like Joanna Weaver has opened up her heart and soul and invited us in to view having God in your life.
All this makes, "At the Feet of Jesus" Daily Devotions to Nurture a Mary Heart" worth having and starting each new year with. The only thing that seems to be missing, is an app and journal to go with this beautiful devotional.

Why do we need a new daily devotional? Most of us need help to focus our attention. There are so many things that vie for our attention and we juggle so many that, sometimes, we lose sight of what really is important. So we need this devotional to help calm and center us. We can use this in the morning to help focus us on God and His plans for us rather than our plans for the day. We can use this in the afternoon to help re-energize us when the activities of the day have drained us of our energy. We can use this in the evening when we are weary from the world’s battering and we need rest and peace in God. “At the Feet of Jesus” is not a time-consuming read. Each devotional starts with scripture, followed by the devotional, followed by a recommended verse to read and then the Reflect will help you dig into the life-changing Word of God for yourself. They are only a page or less in length but they are oh so helpful to properly channel our energies in the right direction. Sprinkled throughout the year are “Going Deeper” helps to help develop a daily quiet time. If we use these daily devotionals correctly we will all be the better for it.

At the Feet of Jesus by Joanna Weaver––a book review
My review––It's difficult to review a devotional book, simply from the standpoint that there is very little continuity in seeking to 'read it through.' So, my plan of approach was to simply start reading several different days worth and seek to evaluate what I read. While this may have left something wanting, it gave me a pretty good flavor for this particular book.
The flavor it left me with? Oatmeal.
Don't get me wrong; I really like oatmeal, but unless you add something to it (a good spoonful of brown sugar and a hefty sprinkle of cinnamon), you know it's just rather plain––beneficial, but plain. I got the impression quite quickly that I needed to have read Weaver's other books for this to make good sense, at times. Granted, my random approach may have lent itself to missing some context. However, there were times where even a string of days seemed to still be missing something––the greater context of whichever book of Weaver's that series of days was drawn from. I've not read any of her other books, so I cannot comment upon those. I just know it left things a bit flat in this compilation. There was one of the days, quite early on (January 7) that set off some alarms in my thinking. At the risk of lengthening this review beyond my norm, I'm going to quote the context so I'm not accused of misquoting the author:
Perhaps you've never considered how much your heavenly Father longs to know you and be known by you. We've been told that we were born with a God-shaped hole––a spiritual vacuum that can't be filled by anything or anyone except God Himself. But have you ever considered that God might have a you-shaped hole, an emptiness that only you can fill?
'…that God might have a you-shaped hole, an emptiness that only you can fill.' I'm sorry, but this is just so clearly wrong in it's view and understanding of God. Again, I do not know the author; I've not read any of her other books. So, I'm going to grant her 'the benefit of the doubt' and go with grace here. This is lighthearted fluff and nonsense at the very least; it is dangerous thinking at its worst. When we, as humans, created by our Great Creator God, begin assigning 'needs' and 'holes' in God, the slippery slope upon which we are set is steep and, indeed, very slippery. I think I know what the author is intending––God loves us so very much. But to move from that biblical truth to one of our own making––that God is not complete in and of Himself apart from having this loving relationship with us, elevates man to godlike status and demotes the Lord God Almighty to our meager level.
So, I would exercise caution with this devotional. One might be better off simply getting ahold of her other books and reading them. Use discernment and wisdom, let this be a book with which your mind is fully engaged (which is also one of my other 'pet peeves'––most people seem to let their guard down with devotional books, thinking they're simple and easy to read).

This is an absolutely amazing devotional with 365 days of personal challenges that I am delighted to have put my hands upon. Since I picked this one up for review I have been reading through a bit more quickly than what is meant as I have been doing a few days worth reading at a time, but I am planning to go back and do it again next year because I am enjoying it that much. As a matter of fact, after just reading through the readings for January I am loving this so much that I am considering buying a copy for absolutely every woman I know. I have enjoyed in the past reading parts of Joanna Weaver’s books and this devotional is as if she went through her three books (Mary, Martha and Lazarus) and divided them up to dates and added on the appropriate verses of inspiration and then followed by a reflection verse that gives you a slight challenge – whether it is something to write down or just ponder.
It’s amazing to me how the evil spirits seem to pounce when you find something that is strong in the word of God and this devotional is. I have been so challenged by her words and stories and inspired by going deeper in scripture on a daily basis. The individual devotions do not take much time, but I find myself wanting to spend more time as I go from a scripture to read and go further or back a bit more in my reading. Pairing this devotional with the Everyday Bible for Women has been an invigorating experience and I truly thing they are both a must have for every woman I know. I cannot recommend this devotional enough!
The book itself is beautiful, it’s a “gift book” so the cover has just a bit of padding to it and it’s about the size of a trade paperback book but it’s hardcover. It’s gorgeous on a shelf and table, and I enjoy reaching for it. The text is all one color as per usual, but the little swirls here and there that accent the Bible verses give it just a bit of umph that is really attractive.
Whether you have read Joanna’s books in the past or not, At the Feet of Jesus has something for you within the pages. It is delivered in a beautiful book package that will grace your permanent keeper shelves I promise.

Joanna Weaver, author of such outstanding books for women such as “Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World”, has written a valuable daily devotional called “At the Feet of Jesus.” In typical daily devotional style, each reading consists of a scripture reading, the actual devotional, concluding with additional scripture reading and a question to assist the reader in further reflection on the day’s topic. To a large degree, “At the Feet of Jesus” reminded me of daily devotionals such as “Our Daily Bread” in that each day has a particular focus, scriptures to encourage further engagement of that subject and salient questions that will assist the reader in applying the principles gleaned from the scripture and devotional reading.
“At the Feet of Jesus” is devoted to assisting women, either in personal devotion or perhaps even in a small group setting to literally sit at the feet of Jesus by looking to Scripture for daily guidance. The daily topics are relevant and present more than just a nice story with a scripture that matches the topic. Weaver cogently uses the stories in the devotions to present a situation that many women might face in their life using Scripture as the method by which to analyze the story or topic. This sets this devotional above the typical daily reading, nice story and move on type approach provided by typical daily devotionals. “At the Feet of Jesus” provides a balanced approach to Bible study presenting a salient mix of theological acumen with principles that can easily be applied to everyday life.
An added bonus is a Daily Bible Reading Plan in the last section of the devotional. So in addition to the passages of Scripture provided in the daily devotions, the reader can use this book as a resource for their yearly bible reading plan.
I highly recommend this devotional for women to use in their personal devotions. Furthermore, “At the Feet of Jesus” could easily be utilized by women’s small groups at church.
At the Feet of Jesus takes excerpts from Joanna Weaver's three books (see above) and turns them into a devotional for every day of the year. Each day's devotional has a corresponding set of verses from the Bible for further study. These short devotionals are really easy to read would be a great addition to regulary daily Bible reading and study.
There is also a Read-Through-the-Bible-in-a-Year Reading Plan in the back that is very easy to follow and has a great layout. Instead of reading straight through from cover to cover, you go back and forth between Old Testament and New Testament books, reading first one OT book through then reading a NT book through. This seems like a great way to read through the Bible, and I am looking forward to starting this plan at the first of next year.
Having not read Joanna Weaver's other books, this devotional book contained all new material for me. If you have read the other books, this might be a bit repetitive, but it might also be a fresh way to re-read those books. I have to admit that a few of the readings felt a little like I was missing something, and I attribute that to the fact that I haven't read the previous books in their entirety.
At the Feet of Jesus is a good reminder that we should be nurturing a Mary heart – one that sits at the feet of Jesus – every day of the year.
Do you like to use a devotional book as a part of your daily time with Jesus? If you do, or have been thinking about getting one, I think you will like At the Feet of Jesus...Daily Devotions to Nurture a Mary Heart by Joanna Weaver. This is a one-year devotional that features a daily Bible verse and reading, as well as, a further Bible reading and a reflection question. Once a month there is a Going Deeper section that cover topics such as The Invitation, Journaling, Scripture memorization, prayer, and more.
Why did I choose to review At the Feet of Jesus? Well...I have read and enjoyed Joanna’s Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World and Having a Mary Spirit, (actually, I think it would be more accurate to say that I devoured them). So, when I saw Joanna’s newest book being offered to be reviewed, I requested it without a second thought.
What do I think of this devotional? I think It is one that I will enjoy for many years to come. I like to rotate devotionals, using a different one each year. I will be using At the Feet of Jesus in 2013 as a part of my daily devotions.I also like that there is a daily Bible reading guide in the back of the book.
**At the Feet of Jesus by Joanna Weaver was provided for me free by Litfuse Publicity Group in exchange for my honest review.
My Review: Well I have said it before and will say it again, I Have A Thing About DEVOTIONALS! And At the Feet of Jesus is no different!
I will go back through this one on a daily basis now. I wanted to read and review this so you all could reap some benefits from it as soon as possible. So now that I am able to do so I can now take my time and really listen to the 365 days of wonderful devotions that author JoAnna Weaver has put together in this awesome collection of wonderful scriptures to help us to develop quite time with our Lord.
Make sure to put this devotional on your Must Read and Devour List!!! I will have this on my shelf waiting to re-read starting with Jan. 1st, 2013 in order to read at the pace that Jesus takes me. The scriptures, the en-lighting words of others thru out the pages, along with the added scriptures and reflections on each page I pray will give us ladies an insight to becoming closer to the Lord. I believe that At the Feet of Jesus is a perfect title!
So due to the above, if I could it would be higher, I am giving this book a Breath of Life ratings of:
Five Clock Rating!!!
Disclosure: I received the above book in exchange for my honest opinion and review. Opinions are my own and yours may differ.
"At the Feet of Jesus; Daily Devotions to Nurture a Mary Heart," is a wonderful, one page a day, devotional. This one-year devotional features a daily Bible verse (written out-no needing a bible for it )and the reading, as well as, a further Bible reading (you'll need your bible) and a reflection question. This book explains how we're not suppose to just read His word, but to slow down and enjoy God. You'll be encouraged to go deeper in your relationship with God.
Joanna's writing was so wonderful it felt more like a warm conversation between friends and I caught myself reading several 'days' at a time. The words are woven beautifully and it really motivated me to start the day at His feet, listening to His words, instead of being distracted by the busyness life can bring. Extremely easy to read, wonderfully written, and not to mention the beautiful padded hardcover. I would defiantly recommend this book as a devotional. 5 out of 5 stars for sure!! I was given this book through Waterbrook Multnomah publishing.
I am very pleased with this devotional! It leads me to scripture, encourages, and exhorts for a full year. It is primarily made up of excerpts from “Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World”, “Having a Mary Spirit”, and “Lazarus Awakening”. It is conversational, as if one were sitting down with the author, and shows her own heart rather than simply point a finger at the reader.
Included for each day is a scripture verse, a devotion, and verses to look up and meditate on. There are several additional pages throughout for “Going Deeper” for subjects such as Bible study, journaling, and other helps. There is food for thought on every page, and that food may encourage action with regards to one’s thoughts, behaviors, or challenges. I found that if there were devotions that I didn’t particularly like, they were ones that I needed more than others! The reader is regularly reminded of God’s great love for us and His willingness to forgive and to help us grow in faith.
I highly recommend this to every woman who wants to spend beneficial minutes each day as Mary, Martha, and Lazarus would, at the feet of Jesus.
This time of year I begin to look for a devotional book to recommend for the upcoming year, and this year, it is "At The Feet of Jesus." Not only is this a lovely daily devotion, it goes one step further with sections called "Going Deeper" scattered throughout the book that gives great tips for using the devotion to delve deeper into God's word. There is also a special reading guide to going through the Bible in one year at the end of the book.
Each daily selection is written in easy-to-understand language with Joanna Weaver sharing snippets from her own faith walk - it feels almost as if you are sitting down with her each day for a special devotional time.
I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a new guide to their spiritual life for the upcoming new year! It would also make a great gift!
This devotional encourages us to be more like Mary and take the time to quietly listen to what God is saying to us.
Each day's devotional is started with a Scripture Verse. There is then an excerpt or outtake from one of Joanna's books: "Having a Mary Spirit", "Having a Mary Heart" or "Lazarus Awakening". There is also a Read and Reflect at the end of each day which includes a section of Scripture and a question to help you dig deeper into the day's study.
The pages are very pleasing to the eye. Each day's study is contained on one page for easy reading and time management.
This is a wonderful devotional to nurture a Mary heart.
As a busy working mom, I always appreciate a great devotional to help me get at least a snippet of wisdom from God's Word every day. I was greatly blessed by this devotional compilation from Joanna Weaver's books. There were many days that I felt the reading for that day was exactly the message that I desperately needed at that very moment. As the readings ARE excerpts from her books, some of the content may be more meaningful to you if you have read the books, but God's Word never returns void and I believe the daily messages will be just as great a blessing to anyone who has not read the books as well. I have also gifted this book, and the recipient has been equally blessed. I highly recommend this devotional.
One of the resources that I like to use during my quiet time in the mornings is a daily devotional. It not only guides me through a reading each day, but also shares insight and teaching to go along with the reading. There are suggested additional readings included as well in some devotionals.
When I found out that Joanna Weaver wrote a devotional, I was thrilled as I love her books on Mary and Martha. I tend to lean towards the busy like Martha and long to be more like Mary taking the time to sit at His feet. This book is such an encouragement to do just that each day. If you are looking for a devotional, then I highly recommend that you get this one.
"At the feet of Jesus" is a devotional that will place you right there... at the feet of Jesus. Giving you a little more than just a devotional, you will be encouraged to go deeper in your relationship with God. Touching on a range of topics from worry to depression to how to care for yourself or be a good friend, this book will challenge you. You will also learn about Scripture memory, prayer, and how to study your Bible. It's a perfect mix of encouragment and Bible Study in one book.
*Litfuse Publicity Group has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book for my honest review. ~ Thanks!
I am still reading this, but like it. It is a good light devotional. Although, I would not use this alone as my primary personal Bible/prayer time, I do think it is beneficial. Some entries are better than others, and like all Christian books I read, I can find things I may not completely agree with, but over all I would not hesitate to recommend this to someone. Just right for a break with with a cup of coffee and a few minutes of quiet. I plan to continue on with it for the rest of this year. (I received a free copy of this book from the publishers.)
Joanna Weaver has put together a very thought provoking and challenging devotional. Drawing from her trilogy of Mary, Martha and Lazarus, each day gives an excerpt or reading from one of them. A Scripture to look up is at the end as well as a question. I have found the daily questions to be very challenging (if you take the time to think about them and work on applying them to your life).
I enjoyed this book immensely. Joanna has a great ability to write about the things that matter most to you and give you insight and inspiration for living a victorious life.
