About the author

M. Mukundan(Malayalam: എം. മുകുന്ദൻ) is one of the pioneers of modernity in Malayalam literature. He was born on 10 September 1942 at Mayyazhi in Mahe, a one-time French territory in Kerala. He served as the president of Kerala Sahitya Akademi from October 2006 until March 2010.
Mukundan is known in Kerala as 'Mayyazhiyude Kathakaaran' (The story-teller of Mayyazhi). His native village of Mayyazhi figures in his early works: 'Mayyazhippuzhayude Theerangalil', 'Daivathinte Vikrithikal', 'Appam Chudunna Kunkiyamma' and 'Lesli Achante Kadangal'.
His first literary work was a short story published in 1961. Mukundan has so far published 12 novels and ten collections of short stories. Mukundan's latest four novels 'Adithyanum Radhayum Mattu Chilarum', 'Oru Dalit Yuvathiyude Kadanakatha','Kesavante Vilapangal' and 'Nritham ' carries a change in structure and approach.
'Oru Dalit Yuvathiyude Kadanakatha' reveals how Vasundhara, an actress has been insulted in the course of acting due to some unexpected situations. It proclaims the postmodern message that martyrs are created not only through ideologies, but through art also.
'Kesavante Vilapangal' one of his most recent works tells the story of a writer Kesavan who writes a novel on a child named Appukkuttan who grows under the influence of E. M. S. Namboodiripad. 'Daivathinte Vikrithikal' bagged the Kendra Sahithya Academy award and NV Prize. 'Ee Lokam Athiloru Manushyan' bagged the Kerala Sahitya Academy award. Daivathinte Vikrithikal has been translated into English and published By Penguin Books India.
In 2008, Mukundan's magnum opus Mayyazhi Puzhayude Theerangalil fetched him the award for the best novel published in the last 25 years. Three of his novels were made into feature films in Malayalam . Mukundan wrote the script and one of them bagged a state film award.
Mukundan's latest novel is "Pravasam" (sojourn in non-native land) and tells the story of a Malayali whose journeys carry him around the world.
The French government conferred on him the title of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in 1998 for his contribution to literature.

കലയെ കലയായി കാണാൻ സാധിക്കാത്ത മലയാളിയുടെ സദാചാര ബോധത്തിന്റെയും ജീവിതത്തെ നാടകമായി കാണുന്ന കലാകാരന്മാർക്കിടയിലും ജീവിതം നഷ്ടപെട്ട വസുന്ധര ഒരു യുവതിയുടെ കഥന കഥയാണ് ഈ കഥ. നാടകൃത്തായ നാരായണൻ സവർണ മേധാവിത്ത ചിന്താഗതിയെ രൂക്ഷമായി വിമർശിക്കാനും ചർച്ചാവിഷയമാക്കാനും വേണ്ടി നഗ്നതയെ ഒരായുധമായി ഉപയോഗിക്കാൻ ശ്രമിച്ചത് ആകെ പാളിപ്പോയി തിരിച്ചു കുത്തുകയാണ് ചെയ്തത്. അങ്ങനെ ശക്തമായ സന്ദേശം നൽകാൻ ഉപയോഗിച്ച നഗ്നതയെ പ്രേക്ഷകൻ ആ രീതിയിൽ കാണാതെ പോകുന്നു. അവിടെ നാടകം പരാജയപ്പെടുന്നു. എന്നാലും നാടകത്തിൽ ജയവും പരാജയവും ഇല്ലെന്നു പറഞ്ഞു നാടകസംഘം ആഘോഷത്തിലേക്ക് കടക്കുന്നു. വസുന്ധര അവിടെ ആരുമില്ലാതെ തനിച്ചാവുന്നു.

ആഖ്യാന രീതിയിൽ വളരെയേറെ പുതുമകൾ നിറഞ്ഞ ഒരു കഥയാണിത്. കഥ നാരായണന്റെ കണ്ണിലൂടെ, ഗോകുലിലൂടെ, പിന്നെ ജാവേദിലൂടെ - അങ്ങനെ പല കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളും ആഖ്യാതാക്കളാവുന്നു. പല കോണുകളിലൂടെയാണ് കഥ നീങ്ങുന്നത്. കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളുടെ മാനസികതയെ മനസ്സിലാക്കുവാനും അവന്റെ കണ്ണിലൂടെ ലോകത്തെ കണ്ട് മനസ്സിലാക്കുവാനും വായനക്കാരനു ഇതിലൂടെ സാധിക്കുന്നു. കഥയിൽ പൂർണമായി മുങ്ങിക്കിടക്കുവാൻ ഇവിടെ വായനക്കാരന് പറ്റുന്നു.

ഒരു സവർണ്ണൻ അപമാനിച്ച ദളിത് യുവതിയെ സമൂഹത്തിൽ അവതരിപ്പിക്കാൻ ശ്രമിച്ചു സ്വയം അപമാനിതയായി തീർന്ന ഒരു യുവതിയുടെ കഥന കഥയിലുപരി ഈ പുസ്തകത്തെ മാറ്റിനിർത്തുന്നത് ഇതിലെ ആഖ്യാനരീതിതന്നെയാണ്.

സ്കൂൾ ഓഫ് ഡ്രാമയിലെ അവസാനവർഷ വിദ്യാർഥിനിയായ രാധിക,കരീംബോയിയുടെ നാടകത്തിൽ നഗ്നയായി അഭിനയിക്കാൻ വിസമ്മതിച്ചു. അപമാനിക്കപ്പെട്ട ഒരു ദളിത് യുവതിയെ റിയലിസ്റ്റിക്കായി അവതരിപ്പിക്കാനാണ് കരീംബോയി ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടത്. ഒടുവിൽ രാധികയ്ക്ക് പകരം വസുന്ധര എത്തി, സ്വമനസ്സാലെ നാടകം അവതരിപ്പിച്ചു.

നാടകം അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ദിവസം ടിക്കറ്റ് എല്ലാം വളരെ വേഗത്തിൽ തന്നെ വിറ്റുപോയി. വസുന്ധരയുടെ നഗ്നത നിറഞ്ഞ കഥാപാത്രമാണ് അതിനുകാരണം എന്നത് കരീംബോയിയെ വിഷമിപ്പിച്ചു. നാടകത്തിന് ശേഷം വസുന്ധരയുടെ ഭാവി വരൻ ഗോകുൽ അവളെ ഉപേക്ഷിച്ചു. ആ നാടകം  ഒരിക്കൽ മാത്രമേ സ്റ്റേജിൽ അവതരിപ്പിക്കാൻ പറ്റിയുള്ളൂ... എന്നാലും അതൊരു വിജയമായി തന്നെ കരീംബോയി വിശ്വസിച്ചു.

ആധുനികതയുടെ എഴുത്തുശൈലി ഭാഷയിലേക്ക് ആവാഹിച്ച എഴുത്തുകാരന്‍ എം.മുകുന്ദന്റെ ശ്രദ്ധേയമായ കൃതികളിലൊന്നാണ് ഒരു ദളിത് യുവതിയുടെ കദനകഥ. കലയെ കലയായി കാണാന്‍ സാധിക്കാതെ വരുന്ന നമ്മുടെ സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ സദാചാരബോധത്തിന് നേരെയുള്ള ഒരു കണ്ണാടിയാണ് ഈ നോവല്‍. കാലികപ്രസക്തമായ ഈ കഥ വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ക്കുമുമ്പു തന്നെ ഭാവനയില്‍ കണ്ട എഴുത്തുകാരന്റെ ദീര്‍ഘവീക്ഷണം പ്രശംസനീയമാണ്.

സ്‌കൂള്‍ ഓഫ് ഡ്രാമയിലെ അവസാന വര്‍ഷ വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥിനിയായ രാധിക. കരീം ബോയിയുടെ നാടകത്തില്‍ നഗ്‌നയായി അഭിനയിക്കാന്‍ വിസമ്മതിച്ചു. കുറ്റം അവളുടേതല്ല എന്നാണ് നാടകകൃത്ത് നാരായണന്റെ അഭിപ്രായം. ‘പാരമ്പര്യത്തില്‍ നിന്നും ശീലങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നും പെട്ടെന്ന് നമുക്ക് രക്ഷപ്പെടാന്‍ കഴിയില്ല.’ അപമാനിക്കപ്പെട്ട ഒരു ദളിത് യുവതിയെ റിയലിസ്റ്റിക്കായി അവതരിപ്പിക്കാനാണ് ‘കലയില്‍ കോംപ്രമൈസില്ല’ എന്നു കരുതുന്ന കരീംബോയി ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടത്. ഒടുവില്‍ രാധികയ്ക്കു പകരക്കാരിയായി വസുന്ധരയെത്തി. സ്വമനസ്സാലെ നാടകമതവതരിപ്പിച്ചു. പക്ഷേ, പ്രകാശസംവിധാനം അത്രയും നിഷ്ഫലമാക്കിക്കൊണ്ട് സദസ്സില്‍നിന്ന് നിരവധി ക്യാമറകളുടെ ഫ്‌ളാഷുകള്‍ തുടര്‍ച്ചയായി വസുന്ധരയുടെ നഗ്‌നമേനിയില്‍ വെളിച്ചം പ്രവഹിപ്പിച്ചു…ഒറ്റക്കളി കൊണ്ട് നാടകാവതരണം നിര്‍ത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു.

നാടകങ്ങൾ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളുടെ പുനർജ്ജനി ആണ് എന്ന് വേണമെങ്കിൽ പറയാം. എന്നാൽ നാടകത്തിലെ അഭിനേതാക്കൾ സ്വന്തം ജീവിതം ത്വജിച്ചു കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളെ പുനർജനിപ്പിക്കേണ്ടി വരുന്ന ഒരു അവസ്ഥാന്തരമാണ് ഇതിന്റെ പ്രമേയം. കഥാപാത്രം അനുഭവിച്ച മാനസിക വ്യഥ, അഭിനേതാവും ഏതാണ്ട് അതെ അവസ്ഥയിലൂടെ കടന്നു പോയി അനുഭവിക്കേണ്ടി വരുന്നു. അക്ഷരാർത്ഥത്തിൽ കാലം കഥാപാത്രത്തിന് അഭിനേതാവിൽ പുനർജ്ജനി കണ്ടെത്തുന്നു.

ഈ നോവലിലെ ആഖ്യാതാവ് ഓരോ അധ്യായത്തിലും മാറുന്നുണ്ട്. സൂക്ഷ്മമായ വായന നടത്തുന്ന വായനക്കാരന് എളുപ്പത്തിൽ മനസ്സിലാകുമെങ്കിലും താളുകളിലൂടെ ഓടുന്നവർ അല്പം വിഷമിക്കും. ഒരു അധ്യായത്തിൽ തന്നെ പല ആഖ്യാദാക്കളും ഉണ്ട് താനും.

Vasundhara takes up a role in a drama when a student from school of drama refuses to play the role. She has appear naked on stage in a particular scene. Everybody takes precaution to save it from appear in like a scene which would deviate the audience from drama's original message.
