Joyce Lankester Brisley (6 February 1896 – 1978) was an English writer. She is most noted for writing and illustrating the Milly-Molly-Mandy series, which were first printed in 1925 by the Christian Science Monitor.
The second of three daughters of George Brisley, a pharmacist, of Bexhill-on-Sea, Sussex, Brisley's sisters - Ethel Constance, the eldest, and Nina Kennard, the youngest - were also illustrators. They studied art firstly at Hastings School of Art, then, following their parents' divorce in 1912 and the subsequent relocation of the girls and their father to Brixton, at Lambeth School of Art.
All three sisters illustrated postcards for the publisher Alfred Vivian Mansell & Co., with Nina (who also illustrated Elinor Brent-Dyer's Chalet School series) and Ethel becoming quite prolific. Brisley died in September 1978 at the age of 82.
A charming children's story collection! Although these selections are not as quite as fun and lively to read as the individual, full-length books, they are very sweet in this anthology.
I've had a really difficult time finding affordable vintage editions of The Dawn Shops and Purl and Plain in the U.S., so I was thrilled to find a few of the stories included in this edition.
A mini biography about the life of Joyce Lankester Brisley at the beginning of the book (with a few helpful black and white photos) was definitely a treat and entirely worth it for the price I paid.
I absolutely adore the Milly Molly Mandy and Bunchy series and my favorite is Marigold at Godmother's House. These adorable stories are wonderful to read to children and you can't help but fall in love with all of the characters. They could be considered old-fashioned, but I think that they're much more than that. There's a lively, magical, caring and innocent quality to them that just sparkles.
If you've never read anything by JLB, I highly recommend her books. I think they're enjoyable for any age from 0-100!
