When shy, blue-eyed Dana came to the cliff-bound island, she was only nineteen and a bride. For her handsome husband, the island was home. For Dana, it was to become a place of fearful terror.
At first, there were just little things, shivery things--a smashed and trampled vase of roses, a splintered mirror, a dead sea gull.
But if Dana left the island, she would lose her love. If she stayed and defied her tormentor, she might lose her life?
Someone in the gloom-ridden old house hated her and was trying to scare her away.
Daoma Winston was a prolific writer of Gothic romance and horror/thriller novels. All of her novels have a strong occult theme and usually feature ghosts, witches, demons or magic. (Not "Golden Tramp.")
Did an early DNF on this ! What a bore. Absolutely no character development resulting in the reader faced with flat boring bland characters.
Further, the story appeared to be going in a very typical done-many-times direction with a new bride, a nasty moody husband and an old deserted house full of shady characters.
Lastly, the writing style was childishly simplistic and elementary.
Was very surprised as I loved “The Haversham Legacy” which was a compelling story with complex and intriguing characters … almost hard to believe the same person authored both books.
My copy has a much better "women running from houses" cover. I wish I could post it but I don't know how.
I have a strong nostalgic feeling for these 60's and 70's paperback gothics that were everywhere when I was a kid. I recently bought a big lot of them on eBay that had been previously owned by a mother and son. They listed dates read and short ratings inside the front cover, and left each other brief notes in the margins. It's adorable. This one got a "B" and a "very good" from them in '67 and '68, respectively.
I think the atmosphere is good, the romance is shockingly toxic, and the characters are well-drawn. Entertaining.
Meh. I know Daoma Winston is supposed to be one of the premier Gothic romance novelists, but her writing style and overly-dramatic dialog irritated me. Still the plot was good, if a bit convoluted. May be give her one more try, but I doubt it.
