West is a high school senior who has everything going for him until an accident leaves him paralyzed. Strapped down in his hospital bed, slipping in and out of consciousness, West is terrified and alone. Until he meets Olivia.
She's the girl next door-sort of. A patient in the room next to his, only Olivia can tell what West is thinking, and only Olivia seems to know that the terrible dreams he's been having are not just a result of his medication. Yet as West comes to rely on Olivia-to love her, even-certain questions pull at him: Why has Olivia been in the hospital for so long? And what does it mean that she is at the center of his nightmares? But the biggest question of all comes when West begins to recover and learns that the mysterious girl he's fallen in love with has a secret he could never have seen coming.

As a librarian, I can see why this novel won a coveted spot in the JLG Fall selection. A compelling read, well told love story, beautiful cover and plotting that will pull in reluctant readers. I see this as high interest for my teens.
Wow...this book has definitely earned a spot on my favorites shelf! I'm just so wowed by the entire book and the twist?! I never saw it coming...wish I could tell you every little detail I loved about this book but per publishers request I will wait a month before the book's release date to release my review! But Cylin Busby has a wonderful talent in writing and I can't wait to read any other books she releases!
Blink Once is what I would call a contemporary story with paranormal elements. At the heart of the story is a high school boy who has been in a biking accident that leaves him in the hospital and wondering when--if--he will get out. Weaving in and out of the plot are bizarre dreams that make him questions what is real and what is a figment of his imagination. There is the beautiful Olivia, also a patient and who has her secrets. With each answer, new questions arise in a complex plot that culminates in a revelation of self-identity and the workings of the world.
West has been paralyzed in an accident that he barely remembers. Everyone seems to believe that he isn't aware of his surroundings--everyone, except Olivia that is. Olivia is the only one that realizes that West is conscious, and together they form a bond out of their similar circumstances, as both are trapped in the hospital and the only company for each other. Drifting in and out of consciousness, West is barely aware of what is going on, however, and sometimes it takes time for his mind to puzzle through days and sort them in chronological order. Some things may take years to recover; others will fade out of mind. The focus of most of his thoughts are on Olivia.
The two have a bizarre relationship that seems to have been born out of need. The need for someone to be there, understanding and compassionate. Someone who understands. Even when one of them gets to pushy or crosses some line, the other will be quick to forgive because they have no one else. Having broken up with his ex-girlfriend, it wouldn't have been hard for West to turn his thoughts towards the girl who is there, and Olivia is lonely, having spent quite some time alone in the hospital.
I love how this story explores the unexplained. How is West having these dreams about people he has never met, and who really is Olivia? The story is told through the perspective of someone who isn't entirely there for much of the novel, so West's story isn't very credible. Nevertheless, it is incredible, unique, and interesting. This is a story that I would recommend to those who are interested in a different kind of contemporary read with supernatural elements in addition to a tad bit of mystery and thrills.
What a haunting story! Reading the summary, I loved the idea of a secret connection between Olivia and West. And that is exactly what they had. Something about being in an accident or similar health crisis kind of strips people down to their core. Suddenly, the things you thought were so important are suddenly not. I like reading about characters who are going through these kinds of situations. These kinds of stories are just so compelling to me.
Once I started Blink Once, I knew there was no way I could go to bed without knowing what was going to happen to West. I am usually not a fan of a male first-person narrative, but I really liked West. He was so open and raw, and I appreciate that in a character. I sped through Blink Once in just a few hours. The narrative was written beautifully, and the plot was paced so well, that I just could not stop reading.
The only thing that bothered me about this book, and this was a big thing for me, is that is was almost a ghost story. And if you know me, you know that I don't do ghost stories. Not even if they are friendly ghosts. There was a thriller-type element to Blink Once, almost a ghostly kind of thing, that freaked me out. The combination of this book and being up late got me kind of scared. I am such a ninny, I know. But I wanted to warn others---if you scare easily, this one may not be for you.
The ending was not quite the happily-ever-after I was hoping for, but it was very appropriate and moving. I loved watching West grow and change throughout the story, for me that was the best part of the book. I would definitely read Cylin Busby again. I loved her writing style and her emotional plot. Overall, I would recommend Blink Once.
Well Blink Once it's a life story,a true thriller. This book should be a movie, the subject it's perfect for a script.I can confess that i cried by the end of the book,a few tears..because it was sooo sad...i couldn't stop myself...
OK.The story main character it's a 17 years old kid called West. His life supposed to be perfect, until a bike accident leaves him paralyzed. He "wakes" up in a hospital, and doesn't know what happened.Right there he meets Olivia, the girl next door.Olivia seems to be the only one who can understand West, and she is trying to help him with his creepy nightmares about a man.The two teenagers are starting to become best friends,or it's more that only friendship ?! All things seems to be going well, until there's an opportunity for West,a surgery which can save him from this bad nightmare-being paralyzed, and this makes things between them cool down,Olivia it's scared that West will leave her alone...
This book made me so addicted.I loved the way Cylin keeps the "mistery" let's say it in this way...and how the characters grow along each other.I can't choose a fav between West and Olivia,i just can't.They are so different, each one has that something that the other doesn't have. I understand why this book it's called Blink Once, but i'll let you guys find out :) Blink Once made me wondering what if?what if one day i'll "wake up" in a hospital paralyzed,to not be able to move, talk,or do anything, just playing dead in a bed. This sounds awful!!!
I'll give Cylin's book 5+ out of 5,Blink Once was awesome :)
"Sometimes at night, when I was alone, or when I was at the pool, in the quiet stillness underwater, my mind would go to that place. To the hospital, to the people there. It was as if my heart could travel, over the miles, over the months that had passed, and I was back with her. Olivia"
Oh My God ! I have just finished another awesome book ! I had some sad feelings as I read it ,of course. But this is why I enjoyed it so much ! There can be lots of sad stories, but they must be well written. And "Blink Once" is certainly a good-written one ! The subject is really great.Something new for me .I mean,I've heard about this "meetings" with other "spirits" of the alive patients,as you're in comatose. But I never knew exactly how it was like. Before I read this book.I felt so bad about West...his whole life was over ! - I thought.Of course,I was extremely happy when I found out that something can fix that mess up.I somehow knew that the surgey was going to work. But still,I wasn't sure.It was hard for me to think that West was going to die.No! Olivia...was also a very well constructed character.I liked her and I had almost cried at the end of the book. One of the best parts was when West found out about his three-months comatose. This was unbelieveable ! What can I say more...I loved every single page of this book.I didn't really want another book ,because I feel like everything was told here,in this one and only book. And it was awesome ! I feel like turning back the time and read it again for the first time :). Respect for Cylin Busby !
You guys, I'm in a state of shock. This is one of the best, most emotional books I've read in a long time . . . I'm just going to say now that no words I will ever speak (or type) can justify or express exactly how I feel about Blink Once, exactly how much it tore me apart.
Blink Once is about seventeen-year-old West, who is in a mountain bike accident and ends up in a hospital. From the first page, I loved West. He was compassionate, caring, and an overall great guy. He is one of the best male narrators I've ever read. He, however, isn't my favorite character in the book -- Olivia is. From her first scene, she steals the show with her shy, gentle wit and her amazing compassion. She is a fellow patient at the hospital, and she often shows up in West's room to visit and take care of him on her own. Their relationship soon becomes more than just friendly, however, when they fall for each other.
Then, an amazing twist comes about, and everything you thought you knew just gets flipped upside down. The twist brings a great amount of surreal things to the surface, making you doubt every fact you learned. Busby's writing throughout the book is simple; not flowery, or over-descriptive, but just perfect. She gives you just enough information, just enough description to where you know what's going on.
The tension in the story is unbelievably high. The beginning took a little warming up to, but after that, it was smooth sailing. I read the last three-quarters of the book in one sitting, and I loved every page. I sobbed through the last third, especially during the twist at the end that I almost saw coming, but was hoping didn't.
The point is, Blink Once made me feel so much. If you want a book that will make you laugh, cry, gasp, and ultimately fall in love with it, Blink Once is my number-one recommendation. (P.S. My eyes are still watering every time I think about it.)
A spare, evocative thriller from an acclaimed YA memoirist. In this haunting story, we first meet West, a 17-year-old accident victim who wakes up in the hospital confused about what has happened to him, and the extent of his injuries. Luckily, there is a teen girl in the room next door, Olivia, who is more than happy to fill him in: “You’re paralyzed, in case no one has told you yet,” she announces bluntly. Olivia, a beautiful former ballerina, is at once charming and terrifying, and she quickly becomes West’s friend, the only friend he can actually count on. As his dreams and visions in the hospital grow more and more terrifying, his new friend is there to help him unravel the mystery. Is the hospital haunted? Is there a conspiracy to lock away unwanted sick kids here? And most troubling, can West and Olivia even trust their own reality, that they actually are who they think they are? A satisfying twist will have readers on the edge of their seats, asking for more, even past the last heartbreaking pages of this unique and chilling romance. Ages 14-up.
One of the mysteries of the world is what happens to you, when you are between life and death? Are you here stuck in limbo among us? Or are you lost? Destined to live in place where no one can hear or see you. I have watch many shows and read books on this matter. If you want a great book full of mystery with a life hanging in the balance, read this now.
What I loved most about this story is the great plot! I really like how the author kept the reader out of the loop till the very end. Busby, gave me some jaw droppings moments as well as a few ,"NO WAY!!". Towards to the end, my excitement build up to an extreme, leaving me satisfied. I just couldn't be believe. Be prepared to have yourself thrown out of your seat.
The best par to this story is the love interest. It's amazing yet utterly bizarre. I mean, at first the reader is unaware, so it's okay. Once the reader pieces everything together, you can't help but think back on those moments wondering,"WTH?" It's makes you questions everything you read and more. Since there is no real concrete information on this, this love is plausible.
My favorite part is the ending. Once your mind pieces everything together and sweeps through the memories of what you read, MIND BLOWN! After turning the last page, I put the book book just allowing myself some time to process. I mean, how can anyone process this. Again, it's plausible yet it makes you questions what really happens to you when your in that state.
Blink Once is a mind blowing thriller that reeks of awesomeness. The narrative places the reader in richly built world you never want to step off of. Tightly plotted and never dull, Blink Once is stunning!
I received this book free fom Cylin, in exchange of a honest review. Thank you, Cylin!! <3
Review
This book was amazing! Paralyzed, West can only notice. He can notice Olivia's beauty and hope that, one day, he will be healed. But he starts to have nightmares where he sees a girl crying and man with burned face. West doesn't know what will happen to him and the only thing that relieves him is Olivia. She always stands with him, talks with him and tells him that he is going to be OK. But as they become closer, West wonders - who is this girl and why is she here, despite being apparently healthy? You can find out just reading.
My opinion
I can't believe how awesome this book was! I read it in one breath and I can't also believe that it's over! This book has a lot of suspense and it simply blows your mind - the fact that you never know what will happen, if West is going to heal, or just if Olivia will kiss him! West couldn't speak at all, but this created a special connection between them: they were communicating easyly and Olivia always knew what West wanted to say. What bothered me the most was that the " bitchy " nurse thought that West was a vegetable. Actually, almost everyone thought this. And the ending...it was awesome. West was very brave and he fought for his Olivia. And yes, I recommend you this book.
Wow. This novel about West, a high school kid who is paralyzed after an accident, is mysterious and magical at the same time. OK, usually I don’t like books you would describe that way. But this book was amazing. West is contemporary and believable. He can only communicate through blinking, and the girl in the next hospital room over, Olivia, is about the only thing getting him through the entire ordeal. I can’t say too much without spoiling things, but there are nightmares and crimes and surprises and tears…and, above all, an extremely satisfying read! Read on my Kindle from an ARC supplied by the publisher.
The plot: West is paralyzed in a coma and falls for a girl named Olivia, who he doesn’t realize is also in a coma. He gets better. She dies. The end.
I can’t think of any reason to recommend the book. Nothing much happens for the first 64% of the BLINK ONCE. The last third is mildly interesting, but not enough to recommend.

["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
"Blink Once" is a young adult paranormal story with a mysterious and coming of age leaning that took me by surprise in how resonant it was. The story begins with the narrative of a high school student named West who wakes in a hospital with no memory of what happened as well as having little to no ability to communicate or move. He has no bearing on how much time has passed since in the hospital, and his parents and friends share concern over his well-being. Add to his particular stay a charming girl named Olivia who rests in the room next to his. West isn't sure of whom Olivia is, but they get on well enough to share a close bond that builds over time, even as West goes day in and day out through a series of nightmares and recollections that shake him to his core. Ultimately, West has to put the pieces together in terms of how he came to be in the hospital, what messages his nightmares lend, and what role does Olivia play in these considerations?
I definitely enjoyed reading West's narrative through the collective book, for the most part. The story blends the personal narrative, the jarring emotional conflict, and the eerie immersion of West's nightmares very well. I also enjoyed getting to know the collective cast of characters in the work - appreciating the intimacy of West's confusion, anguish and gradual coming to terms with the reality around him. I liked Olivia's character in spells as well, considering she has a very lively personality and her chemistry with West is palpable. The secondary cast of characters, including West's family, friends, and nurses (especially Nurse Norris - I thought she was awesome) are also worth watching through the narrative. The portrayal of the hospital environment is realistic and moves the narrative along quite well.
I anticipated that the story, after a certain point, would take the turn that it did, but it made the narrative no less potent for the revelations that West has to come to terms with in a rather dark story. The narrative keeps one guessing throughout, and while I think there are certain places where Busby could've developed the conflict with even more intimacy, I still thought it was well done for what it had to offer. I would certainly recommend this as a story for those who like a YA paranormal narrative that keeps you guessing along the way, but also mixes a blend of coming of age/tough subject fiction in an intriguing manner.
Overall score: 3.5/5
Note: I received this as an ARC from NetGalley, from the publisher Bloomsbury.
2.5 stars - This book had such potential to be a very powerful book. Unfortunately, the writing and the story progression just was not compelling. So I really want to bump it up to a three to credit Busby for her creativity, but I just find it hard to find the book more than just okay.
To be honest, I couldn't get into the first 2/3 of the book. We meet West, who was paralyzed in an accident, and he meets another patient Olivia, who supposedly shows him how to live.
Meanwhile, West's point of view switches back and forth from his current state to memories of the past and dreams of another world. I felt disconnected as West floated among the three, and I kept thinking they were really random and wondering how in the world everything tied in together. Of course, they did help me come up with my theory, and I will say the book was not at all unpredictable (yes, a double-negative, but it makes more of an emphasis that way).
What really bothered me was the convenience of everything - the bike accident that left him in a paralyzed state and the miraculous surgery that could have killed him. And how easily West and Olivia fell in love. Sure the book questions how you can fall in love with someone you've never even talked to, but I would believe it had I felt more connected to West and Olivia. Unfortunately, I found both characters to be weird and a bit on the awkward side, and their whole interaction was just off - understandable, but off nonetheless.
Of course, even though the book was predictable, and I did see it coming, the epiphany did blow me away - but just for a little bit. Then the story went back to being kind of boring, which was really disappointing because I felt Busby could do SO much with it. I will say I liked how Busby tied everything in together - Olivia, the dreams and everything else. But again, her writing and story progression lacked that compelling component that drew you into West's feelings.
Overall, I would give this book five stars for concept. I just wish there was a way I could have been more into it.
Just when authors of Young Adult novels seem to be all alike...along comes Cylin Busby. Her newest work, Blink Once, is a YA novel that truly respects the intellectual and emotional depth of young adult readers.
Blink Once centers around a high-school senior, West, who lies in a hospital, paralyzed and heavily medicated. Only another patient, the mysterious Oliva, understands West's inner thoughts--including his haunting dreams. The author uses crafty techniques (such as semi-reliable narration) to guide her audience through West's lucid but confused dreamscape. As West grows to trust, depend on, and ultimately love Oliva, he learns of her past and why she stands at the center of his fate. Wonderful support characters such as Nurse Norris and Mike provide great contrasts and insights. At the end, there is a twist you'll never see coming.
Other YA novels (Harry Potter, Twilight and Hunger Games, etc.) are well-written and clever, but ultimately shallow. The difference between reading JK Rowling and Cylin Busby is like the difference between watching a TV sitcom and seeing a live Broadway performance: the former simply entertains; the latter inspires. A writer at the top of her craft, Busby weaves her storytelling with mystery, poignancy and wit.
Blink Once is a book a parent can be excited to give to a teenager (as I have), knowing that it will not only entertain their imaginations, but also expand their minds. Order this book, and keep an eye on this author; she is bound for great things ahead.
Wow, ok. I don't want to say too much. I will say this: I know there's a big clamor for male narrators, and this book has an excellent one. West has been in an accident and is, essentially, trapped in his body. He meets Olivia, and she starts to change everything for him. Throughout all of this--a devastating accident, a grueling and uncertain recovery process, wildly changing relationships--West's voice felt true to his teen guy self. So I think a lot of you will enjoy this book based on that alone. But the storytelling is impeccable, pulling me in, getting me invested, and then totally knocking me back. Don't be put off by the "trapped in his body" thing, either--that is a weird phobia of mine (awake in coma, buried alive, Across The Universe situation) so I was a little leery about this one, but that part actually isn't TOO terrible for the reader. DO pick this one up when it comes out on September 4th--I think a lot of folks will be talking about it. It's definitely one I would recommend to students (despite some language and violence, I think it's a worthwhile read and one many of my kids would really enjoy.)
Disclaimer: I received this title as a free, advance e-book. This review is my own honest opinion.
My Summary: West thought he had the perfect life - an amazing girlfriend, great friends, an a competitive BMX biking career. That is, until the accident.
Now West is a vegetable - completely paralyzed and unable to move. His future looks bleak in comparison to what he used to have... until he meets Olivia. Strange, intense, and mysterious, Olivia helps West on the path to recovery faster than any miracle drug ever could have. But what will happen to their relationship when West is released and things suddenly take a turn for the worst?
My Thoughts: I had no idea what to expect when I began reading Blink Once, but I'm so glad I took a chance on it and stepped out of my comfort zone.
This novel was one of those ones that grabs you and doesn't let go. From the moment I started, I couldn't put it down - I absolutely had to know what happened with West and Olivia. They were both such complex characters, and I loved the way the author portrayed them both in such a great way.
Final Thoughts: I can't really say more without giving something away, but I'll leave you with this: if you love contemporary literature and YA, you need to get yourself a copy of Blink Once!
This is a story about a high schooler named West who gets into a biking accident and becomes paralyzed. He wakes up in the hospital and is very confused, has no idea what is happening, and discovers he has a friend that nobody else knows about.
I found it a little sad, but interesting at the same time. I flew through reading it--or at least it felt like it, since it still took me two days to read it. Seeing the progress that West was making was pretty encouraging, too.
Content: Language--There was basically the same words in this book as in Elena Vanishing, but nearly as often. Sexy Stuff/Romance--West likes Olivia. They kiss a few times, cuddle, and think about each other. Violence--West has dreams over and over of a scary man who beats and assaults a girl, some mentions of blood, also there is the accident West was in
Trapped in your body Others might be surprised that you can Hear life around you.
Holy geez, be still my heart! I DEVOURED this book. In all honesty, I can't recall the last time I was caught off guard by a book in such a way. Not only did the plot unravel in a way that I couldn't step away from, the story grabbed my heart and treated it like a puppet, fully mastering maneuvers to make me sigh, yearn, and appreciate my life.
Blink Once is told from West's point of view. He awakes unable to move his body and no recollection of what's going on. Nurses come in and out moving his position on a bed and he finally realizes that he is in a hospital. His mind is active but he cannot communicate. Stricken with terror, he moves in and out of consciousness.
Worst. Nightmare. Ever. Right? I consider this to be worse than death - consciousness trapped in a body that cannot express itself. The panic. The despair. Reading West's inner dialogue filled me with anguish. Emotionally, I was gasping for my own breath.
West is alone through this turmoil for what seems like months, until one night the girl in the adjoining room pulls her feeding tube mechanism out of her cave and comes to visit. Olivia realizes that West can't communicate but that he's there, so she devises a system of blinks to correspond. West immediately latches onto this connection.
Olivia is able to sneak a glance at West's file and tells him that he hurt his spinal cord and that there is this experimental operation that possibly might give him movement.
Through all of this, West is having nightmares which he discusses (through blinks) with Olivia. Olivia believes that the hospital rooms might be haunted. There was a previous boy who was in West's room, a burn victim, he was removed with no follow up. Olivia assumed that the boy died and maybe the other nightmare-ish visions are telling West about other patients.
Blink Once has been described as both a paranormal story and a love story. I found it to be neither. There were elements of paranormal, and maybe it's because of my own opinions of the genre, that I wouldn't include it. Blink Once felt REAL; paranormal strikes me as fanciful and imaginative. Also, although West and Olivia supposedly "fall in love" with one another, I didn't really buy that. I wouldn't categorize this as a love story at. all. What West and Olivia have between each other isn't really love but it's more than friendship. It's binding, but hardly romantic. I think that it tries to be, but falls short for me. And you know what? I'm OKAY with that. I don't think I would have enjoyed it as much.
And here's another thing...halfway through the book I kept wonder how it would end. Would it fall short? Would it reach its aspirations. And you know what, it mostly did. There were parts that made me feel the plot line was rushed, and you know, a wee bit unbelievable. BUT it was never the part that someone would expect to be unbelievable. All of THOSE aspects I bought hook, line, and sinker.
When I heard about Blink Once, I knew that I had to read it! I loved the idea behind it and it sounded quite different to some of the other young-adult orientated books that are out there. When I received the book, I picked it up straight away and was quickly hooked!
Blink Once is different and a little difficult to describe. This story is narrated by West, a boy who has been left in a coma after having an accident on his bike. For around the first half of this book, West is left paralysed in his hospital bed and we observe what is happening around him - the nurses doing their jobs, his friends and family members visiting him and a very special visitor who introduces herself and tries to communicate with him - a girl called Olivia, who it turns out that only West can see.
Olivia and West form a very strong bond whilst he is in his coma - she seems to understand him and they communicate through blinking and very brief writing. It was interesting to see how they interact and how things developed between them. The couple claim to have fallen in love, but I personally thought that this was a little too quick. West and Olivia clearly have a unique bond and I can understand that they would have a special sort of relationship, but I felt that romance was taking a bit too far, it just didn't feel right for me. However, the two characters were both equally interesting and likeable, which made the book a pleasure to read.
When West undergoes surgery and comes out of his coma, it is apparent that he was the only person who could see Olivia, which completely twists the book and changes the feeling of it completely, it gives a mystery and somewhat paranormal feel to the book. During his recovery, West makes it his aim to try and find Olivia without much help at all. I won't say too much as to avoid spoilers, but West does find out a lot of information about Olivia and discovers who she really is. There is a strong sense of suspense and I loved being with West, finding out all of the new information about Olivia.
I really enjoyed this book and I would love to read more books by Cylin Busby. I loved the idea behind this and the result was great. I admit that I was a bit underwhelmed by the ending - I think that, quite easily, a lot more could've been explored, this could've been even better if the story continued. However, I was probably mostly underwhelmed because I didn't want the story to finish! This book is great for all sorts of book fans - those who enjoy both realistic and paranormal reads will probably enjoy this. I would love to see more people read this book as I think it could become extremely popular!
