Spies are infiltrating the most sensitive sites in the Galactic Republic. Pirates are terrorizing the shipping lanes. Damsels are in distress. The xenophobic and expansive K’Rang fleet is once again threatening human worlds. These are the challenges facing Lieutenant Commander Kelly Blake, the newest and youngest captain in the Galactic Republic Fleet’s Scout Force, as he takes command of the Scout Ship Vigilant and sets out on his first missions.
Pirates, espionage, kidnapping, heroic spies, counterintelligence and Marines -- what's not to like? My favorite in this book series, I especially like the supporting characters -- some new, some from the first book -- all adding to the stew that makes up such an interesting read. One, in particular, is my favorite character in the entire series -- and his white cat named Rojo. This is not the kind of science fiction that makes one's head hurt from all the technology details -- it's primarily a people story. That, and all the inside jokes and puns that people of certain backgrounds and ages will recognize make this an enjoyable read.
Unlike some series, each book is self-contained and complete, although they do build upon each other. Still, reading them out of order won't leave one confused.
This was a faced paced and exciting fun read. Lots of action, lots of new tech and innovation. I also enjoyed the fact that it was a scout ship and how stealth and intelligence is critical to success. As a retired Vietnam vest I am very proud of my time in the military. Thanks for a great read and looking forward to 3.
