The Resistance #1

Beware the Hawk

Rate this book
Sure, being a courier for a secret, possibly terrorist society has its risks, but the pay was worth it.

At least I thought it was until I was ordered to make a late-night run to Boston to meet an opium-addicted, vodka-addled contact, who blows the deal. Now I am being hunted as I hobble, injured through the streets of Beantown.

When I discover a planted gun and my new assignment, I wonder if perhaps I made a bad career choice.

About the author

A.J. O'Connell

A.J. O'Connell is a writer of literary adventure stories who enjoys using fancy words and making people laugh.

"Beware the Hawk," which was published in 2012 by Vagabondage Press, is her first book. The sequel, "The Eagle and the Arrow," will be released in June of 2013. She's also published short stories in Independent Ink Magazine, on NPR's website and in several anthologies.

She's always loved to read, which engendered a love of writing, and she's pursued writing in many different forms: as a teenager she was a bad poet, after college, she was a reporter, and after that, she obtained her MFA at a low-residency program, which taught her how to use strong verbs and also how to live for 10 days on an island with 100 other writers.

She currently lives in Connecticut with her husband, dog and cat. She has an office in which she writes and drinks a lot of tea, which is a poor substitute for wine, but more socially acceptable at 11 a.m. on a Tuesday.

She is also a member of Sisters in Crime New England.

Facts:

I'm trying to read too many books given my course load plus job.

This is 50 pages. I can probably do it.

I know the author from a moms group so it's about to get awkward if I hate it.

10/10: Took me too long to get through because I don't have time. I recommend going through it in one go if possible. It's very short. Entertaining fluff, which I like. There were a couple minor things that stood out as mistakes. One was reference to a "microdermal transplant". I assume that was meant to be implant. It's not a big deal but it was a little distracting. Generally, would recommend for a fast, fun read.

It's pulp fiction. Real pulp fiction, though, not like the movie. John Travolta is not in this book. Sorry.

That's how A.J. O'Connell describes her new novella "Beware the Hawk" on her website. I'm not suggesting I'm an expert of the genre as I can honestly say that I have read very few (if any) pulp fiction novels (wait, does Elmore Leonard count?) I'm just saying, even I know there are a few things that are absolutely essential:

Feisty Dames (check) The protagonist of the story (who, lol, I didn't realize until writing this up, is nameless and when I figure out how O'Connell managed to do that so effortlessly I will gladly share it with you) is nothing if not feisty. Jaded, yes, but not so much so that she's unreachable and isn't constantly surprised and dismayed. You can feel shocked by her predicaments, because you sense that she is too, no matter how above it all she tries to portray herself.
Clandestine Meetings (check) Protagonist and her Boston contact, Leo have a number of meetings in a seedy bar where things get more confused the more they're explained.
Code Words (check) The title alone tells you this is true and yet it avoids being gimmicky.
Someone Overusing the Term "Sweetheart" (check) Sooooo many sweethearts! But, hey, a pulp fiction book that takes place in Boston where it's not sweetheart, but "sweet-haht" is begging for this overuse.

If, like me, you are unfamiliar with the genre, I highly suggest you start here. It's a short, well written read that will have you wishing it was so much longer. Not in an unfinished way, but in a "I want to hang out with these characters for many, many more pages" way.

In addition to the subtle way that she avoids naming the main character and still makes us feel as if we know her almost intimately, the writer in me also admires and wants to know how O'Connell finds the exact perfect way with descriptions so that they not only tell us the physicality of a thing, but also a bit about the character who notices them without weighing us down with too many facts. It's a gift that's for sure.

Here are a few of my non-spoilery favorites that, thanks to Kindle being in every aspect of my life I can easily highlight on my reader and then cut and paste on my Kindle App for my PC (annotated and everything!!). ♥

It started as a tramp stamp but kind of took over. One of my roommates calls it a tramp stampede.

O'Connell, A.J. (2012-01-14). Beware The Hawk (Kindle Locations 334-335). Vagabondage Press LLC. Kindle Edition.

I turned my head to see three skinny girls wearing black tank tops and khakis. Danny picked all of them up in one gigantic hug and then dropped them. They fell on their feet, three Siamese cats, styled by Abercrombie & Fitch.

O'Connell, A.J. (2012-01-14). Beware The Hawk (Kindle Locations 355-356). Vagabondage Press LLC. Kindle Edition.

It's taking everything in me not to share every single example and every single witty sentence (of which there are many) that I have highlighted here. But I don't have the time (or copyright) for that. :)) Plus, you should probably read it for yourself and highlight your own favorites.

I'm not quite sure where to start. First off, I must have missed where this book was only 41 pages long so imagine my surprise when it arrives on my doorstep! Once I got over that shock however, it's not that bad. It takes the first 3/4 of the book to set the stage and then the last few pages things happen and then the last rush and BOOM over. I think I liked it. I'm pretty sure I did and I really enjoyed that last twist there at the end (totally made the story for me), but... It all happened so slow and then fast that I'm still not quite sure what I read... but I think I liked it.

Evrything seemed to be covered in powdered sugar, and I knew then that I could not spatter a white world like that with red.

След това, на най-последната 41 страничка, на най-последния абзац, реших, че ще е 5. Не защото я спечелих, не и заради ярко розовия автограф, който сега изглежда още по-намясто, отколкото когато я отворих за първи път.

Do you know? It's not like I'm going to get a chance to tell anyone, right? I recognize that iPhone. I know why you're here.

After read thoughts:
Well, this is not a stpry about the French Resistance. But still, this is a story about a Resisitance - tho till the end we still don't know what is this organisation and what is it resesting to - and our storry teller and guide is left unnamed too. The pink girl leads as, limping, through Boston, sometimes her thoughts go back in the past, sometimes the run shyly forward. And you follow her, carefully, watching not to get lost, like Danny in the blizzard, and listen to hear somewone saying the code words - Beware the Hawk.
Even if little became clear, it was still a pleasure reading this. It is only 41 pages long. This is one of those reads ( that I tend to pick lately) that are perfect for reading at once, while in the bus (or waiting for it). I guess this is a part of what pulp fiction is all about.
While I was reading, I was imagining the scenes all in black and white, with flashes of colour - like those photoshop edited pictures. Or - have you seen the John Doe TV series - the why he was seeing. All in monochrome (the cool noir front cover gave a good start to my imagination); Boston is all gray and muddy, untill the snow covers it in blinding white. And in this black and white picture, the colour trails just burn your eyes - the pink hair. Leo's orange snickers. The bubbles on the iPhone's screen. Blood on the snow.
But even so, for the most of the story I thought I would give it 3 stars - I like it. It just seemed too short to satisfy my curiosity. And then, on page 37, I decided it was worth 4 stars:

Evrything seemed to be covered in powdered sugar, and I knew then that I could not spatter a white world like that with red.

I went one, up till the very last sentence on the very last page. And after reading it and closing the book, I rated it 5 stars. Not because I had the luck to win it, or because of the authograph in bright pink glitter (that now seems even cooler after reading the text)

Do you know? It's not like I'm going to get a chance to tell anyone, right? I recognize that iPhone. I know why you're here.

So what can I say in the end? Be careful with people with iPhones.

I rate books based on how I feel in the moment, on my expectations and how the reads live up to them. This short novel did surprisingly well. It was like a fast drink, that was getting better to the bottom of the glass. I really enjoyed reading it, and liked the ending as well, even if so much was left clouded in mystery. So fo all of this, the Hawk earned a highest grade.

*I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.*

Beware the Hawk is a very short read but it's definitely worth it. The pacing is perfect and the mystery factor is high. I savored the eerie and suspenseful atmosphere of the story. The characters are very few since this is only a 41-page novella, but they're all crucial characters. The unnamed heroine is feisty and smart. She's also funny at times and has got a lot of spunk. And I liked that in the end, she decided to take things in her hands and not just take orders blindly. Leo is a shady character, but there's a point when I also felt sympathy for him. Danny is a revelation. I honestly didn't see that twist on his character coming. But looking back, I think his subtle actions are quite suggestive of his identity.

For a novella, Beware the Hawk is quite packed. There's action, suspense and a little bit of almost-romance. And I liked that ending! Although it was easy to guess what happened to the heroine, it still felt like there are still other possibilities on the way things ended. It's sort of an open ending, but it was written very well. I would have wanted this to be a full-length novel though; it seems like the heroine has an interesting history. But still, it's good as it is. If you're looking for a quick and good thriller read, Beware the Hawk is recommended!

(From my Wordpress blog, Word Vagabond: Supporting Independent and Small Press Authors.)

She started working for the Resistance because she liked the sound of their Craigslist ad. It was good money, the kind that would let her survive as an artist in New York City without depending on her parents. When her latest assignment in Boston starts to go south, “survival” takes on a whole new meaning.

The style of this book is attention-grabbing from the start. O’Connell’s descriptive style is light and fun, providing a nice contrast to the suspenseful plot. The main character has enough development to make her interesting, although it’s a bit frustrating that we never find out her name. Even an alias would have given the reader a better grip on the story, I feel. The supporting characters are also well done. I found Danny significantly creepier than greasy Boston operative Leo.

I was infected with a sense of paranoia while reading; looking carefully at every character for ulterior motives and agendas. This would have been a great suspense novel; as a novella, I felt it sold itself short. The end of the book feels like it should be the end of the third chapter instead. Still, O’Connell achieves some impressive things in such a short space. The characters are fully three-dimensional, the plot is exciting, and there is an intriguing mystery. I look forward to seeing what this author can do with a full-length work.

PROS
-Actually creepy: Okay, I love American Horror Story and such, but only 1 of the 40 or whatever episodes actually gave me the creeps. The climax of Beware the Hawk (as well as one earlier jump scare) did what umpteen pages of horror-genre TV tried and failed to do. The setting was so simple, a type of conflict I've seen and read before, but the writing here was electrifying and gritty.
-Great mystery: I love that I still don't know what the Resistance is. I can see myself in a thousand scenarios involving me getting annoyed at a half-baked idea...but that's the thing, the enigma O'Connell creates is clearly designed and well-executed. Enough to make me comprehend, but not enough for me to feel "safe."
-Dark humor: The narrator is so witty and frank. It was a delight to experience. My favorite line: "He was alive, because shooting someone in real life is not like shooting them in the movies. It's not bang, you're dead. It's bang, you bleed."

CONS
-None come to mind.

OVERALL
-Normally I don't like novellas and short stories. Fiction is food for me: I want something long-lasting and emotionally nourishing (same reason why I like TV shows over movies). You can then imagine my delight on having my fiction hunger satiated with a meal that's smaller than usual (okay I'll drop this metaphor). I'm glad this was recommended to me, and I can't wait to read what happens next.

I hope you have your afternoon cleared, because this face-paced read is difficult to put down. O'Connell is a master of wit and crafts a playful novella about a pink-haired spark plug who, strapped for cash, unknowingly agrees to work for a secret anti-government group. As she navigates the gritty streets of Boston, you'll be anxious to discover how she gets herself out of this mess, but-- Beware the Hawk-- savor the experience, because the sequel isn't out yet!

I won this book in Goodreads First Reads and loved it. It was funny and racey and kept me reading start to finish. If you like Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum then you will certainly like this book.

I took one star from the rating for two reasons.
1 - It felt a bit (just a tiny bit) rushed at one point. One extra page would have solved that.
2 - It ended and left me wanting more. Luckily sequel is just days away.

A short novel or long short story that will keep you reading to find out what happens to the feisty (nameless)heroine. A pastiche of the noir detective novels I enjoy so much, this was fun to read, even though the plot began to waver a little toward the end. Looking forward to more from this author.
