About the author

Balakumaran was born in Pazhamarneri village near Thirukattupalli in Thanjavur district in 1946. As a child, he was highly inspired by his mother, who was a Tamil scholar and a Siromani in Sanskrit, used verses of Sangam and other ancient literature to motivate him when ever he was emotionally down. This created a deep interest in Tamil literature which made literature his passion. His first stories were published in a literary magazine called ‘Ka-Sa-Da-Tha-Pa-Ra’ and for which he was also a founding member, a self-anointed militant literary journal that had been launched with a mission to blaze new trails in modernist literature.

He has also contributed to Tamil periodicals such as Kalki, Ananda Vikatan, Saavi and Kumudam. Later he became a famous Tamil writer, author of over 200 novels, 100 short stories, and dialogue/screenplay writer for over 14 films. His writings are noted for a distinct philosophical and religious tone. He is fondly called 'Ezhuthu Sithar' by his fans. He is a disciple of "Sri Yogi Ram Surath Kumar".

In his many novels he shows immense interest in enlightenment. He is considered as "Maanasiga Guru" for many individuals, who are in search of the formless almighty. His lucid but powerful expressions of man-woman relationship and human-God union is a tribute to mankind.

தஞ்சை பெரியகோவில் கட்டப்படுவதை மையப்படுத்தி எழுதப்பட்ட புத்தகம்.
முதல் மூன்று பாகங்கள் மிக அருமையாக எழுதப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. ஆனால் நான்கு பாகங்கள் முடிந்தும், மைய நிகழ்வை விட்டுவிட்டு கதை எங்கெங்கோ அலைபாய்வது போன்று உணர்கிறேன்.

Still has not pitched into the actual construction of temple. But got used to his type of writing from his 4th book. Finally understood that the book should not be benchmarked with Kalki's writing. Kalki's novel is historic but Balakumaran's is a story with minimal true facts. Novel is finally good if you think it as a story and not real. Hopefully the construction should start from 5th volume but I doubt as one war is left to begin.

Like other udayar books this is also gripping and balakumaran sir time and proves he is master in telling not only the main plot but also on explaining about people around it to set the environment for the reader. This makes us live the life in that period and takes us into it. The conversation on trip to mount kailash seems to be the authors explanation of personal experience.

The character of panchavan maadevi which was explained to be bold in previous books, becomes weaker when shown more emotional and philoshopical in the book. The description of people was more balanced with conversation on for and against each sector of people gets explained in the book. Based on kings (belief or thoughts) different set of people get more importance in different periods of time is well explained. The book gives more information on why raja raja is a strong king and how he avoids issues in simple ways is well portrayed.

Though different characters get introduced, it helps to keep the flow of the book interesting and makes this book a page turner. The thoughts of different sectors of citizen on one things (temple), their views on capital city and their changes in life style owing to one big decision of king are well explained. This help us understand general economics, policies and politics of a country and how they change with decisions made by powerful people could be understood. This realization is uniqueness of the book.

Though spanning to only 50 pages explanation on how
temmple was envisioned
thought process that went behind each decision making to come out of issues / challenges
explanation on things around each suggestions
makes us understand more about the construction and reasons behind decisions.

If you fall in one of the list -
balakumaran sir fan,
like reading on minds of people,
like reading about different thoughts of same incidents by different people,
a fan of history based fiction
then the book is for you. Surprisingly if you love philosophy even then this can be a good eye opener for you. For other sets of people it might not be a bit slow.

This part felt like the tempo was slowing down and at times, going a little out of context but still was an interesting read. The story started slow, but picked up pace and suddenly it moved to different context introducing a few new characters in the story and again slowing down and then picking up pace, sorta up and down in the pace.

முதல் பாகத்தில் பகை , உளவு , போர் என்று ஆரம்பித்த ஆசிரியர் இரண்டாம் மூன்றாம் பாகங்களில் பெருவுடையார் கோவில் எழுப்புதல் பற்றியும் அதன் நுணக்கங்களையும் கோவில் எவ்வாறு உரு பெற்றது என்பதை பற்றி எழுதி இருப்பார்.பெருவுடையார் கோவிலின் உருவாக்கத்திற்கு துணையாக நின்றவர்கள் அவர்களின் பங்கு என்று உலகத்தின் முதல் க்ரானைட் கலை பொக்கிஷத்தின் உருவாக்கத்தை நம் கண் முன் கொண்டு வந்தார்.ஆனால் தொடர்ந்து இரண்டு மற்றும் பாகங்களில் கோவில் கட்டுமானம் பற்றியே சொல்லி வந்த ஆசிரியர் நான்காம் பாகத்திலும் அதையே மீண்டும் வெவ்வெறு கதாபாத்திரங்களில் சொல்வது சற்றே சல்லிப்படையும் படி இருக்கிறது. என்ன தான் ஆசிரியர் திறம் பட சலிப்பு தட்டாதவாறு கதை எழுதியிருந்தாலும் படித்த விஷயங்களை பற்றியே மீண்டும் படிப்பது சற்றே நம் ஆர்வத்தில் தடை போடுகிறது .போர் பற்றியும் தமிழர்களின் உளவறிதல்கதையில் ஆரம்பித்து ஆர்வத்தை தூண்டிய ஆசிரியர் அந்த ஆர்வத்திற்கு தீனி போடும் வகையில் கதையை நகர்த்தாமல் மிகவும் சுற்றி வளைப்பது சற்றே சலிப்பூட்டுகிறது .தெரிந்த கதாபாத்திரங்களின் கதை கோவில் கட்டுவதில் அவரக்ளின் பங்கு என்னவென்று அதிகமாகவே அலசிவிட்டார் ஆசிரியர் . நான்காம் பாகம் நம் எதிர்பார்ப்பை, மற்ற பாகங்கள் போல் முழுமையாக நிறைவேற்றாவிட்டாலும் கதையின் முடிவை அறிய கண்டிப்பாக நாம் படித்தாக வேண்டும் .

உடையார் கடந்த சில மாதங்களாக படித்துவருவதால், சோழ காலத்தில் வாழ்வதைப் போன்ற ஒரு உணர்வு ஏற்படுகிறது. மிக அருமையாக, நேர்த்தியாக சோழர் கால கலாச்சாரத்தை நம் கண்முன் நிறுத்துகிறார். கோவில் எவ்வாறு வரைபடங்களுடன், மாதிரிகளுடனும், அமைக்கப்படுகிறது என்பதை படிப்படியாக விவரிக்கும்போது, கோவில் கட்டுவதிலுள்ள பிரயத்தனம் பிரமிக்க வைக்கிறது. ஒரேயொரு சிந்தனை, மற்ற பாகங்களில் இல்லாமல், இந்த பாகத்தில் பாலகுமாரன் மிகச்சில இடங்களில் ஆண் பெண் விரச விஷயங்களை கையாண்டிருக்க வேண்டாமோ என்று தோன்றுகிறது. ஏனென்றால், பொன்னியன் செல்வன் எவ்வாறு ஒரு பள்ளிக்கூடப் பையன் கூட படிக்குமாறு இருந்ததோ, அந்த அளவுகோலை பாலகுமாரனும் எடுத்துக் கொண்டிருக்கலாமெனத் தோன்றுகிறது.

மற்றபடி, சோழர்கால அரசியல், நாகரிகம், மிகச்சிறந்த நிர்வாகம் போன்றவற்றை, பாலகுமாரன் ஒரு சரித்திர பேராசியரைப் போல், தேனில் தோய்ந்த பலாச்சுளையைப் போல், நமக்கு உண்ணத் தருகிறார்.

The slowest of all the books in the series so far. Author keeps bringing new characters still this much late into the series. All those new characters are spawn suddenly and they vanish suddenly. There is no central plot other the main tag line of the series "how they built the temple ". But other than that no side stories or plots. Very slow and uninteresting at times. All hopes down for the next one. Simply continuing with the series to see the completion of Temple.

Part 4:
The pace picks up around temple building and suddenly drops with new character branching out. Hope it has concrete reasons in upcoming parts. Anyways this doesn't make me to lose interest on novel.

பாகம் ஐந்து இதில் கற்றுக் கொண்டது பல இருந்த பொழுதும் ராஜராஜ சோழனுடைய வாழ்க்கை வரலாறையும் வாழ்க்கையில் நடந்த சில சம்பவங்களையும் கற்பனையாக அல்லது உண்மையாக கூட நடந்து இருக்கலாம்.

அஸ்தி பாரம் மட்டுமே போடப்பட்ட இந்த சூழ்நிலையில் உலோகம் செய்யும் வரைக்கும் சில இடங்களில் புதிய கதாபாத்திரங்கள் வந்ததும் கதையில் சுவாரசியம் அதிகமானது. சற்று சோர்வு ஏற்பட்ட பொழுது முடிவில் நடந்த அந்த கிருஷ்ண பொம்மை கதை மிகவும் மனதை தொட்டதாய் இருந்தது.

வீரத்துக்கு பேர் போனவன், அனேக போர்களைப் புரிந்தவன் தாயினுடைய வார்த்தை கேட்டு தடுமாறு என்று தருணம் மிகவும் அழகானது.

In this part, the story has branched into numerous side stories and the main story of building a temple has taken a back seat. The author still keeps the reader interested in the story line; however, since the part veers away from the main plot, it is a sort of disappointment for someone who picks up the book to read the continuation of the main plot. I would assume that the author has a reason to do so and may be I will find out in parts 5 & 6 that I would be reading soon!

பல புதிய பாத்திரங்கள் கதையின் உள்ளே வர அவர்களது முக்கியத்துவம் என்ன என்ற கேள்விக்கு இன்னும் நேர்விடை கிடைக்கவில்லை.

கோவில் கட்டுமானத்தைப் பற்றி விமானத்திற்காகச் சுழலாக மண் சாரம் அமைப்பது தவிர வேறு முக்கியத்தகவல் ஏதும் கிடைக்கவில்லையே என்ற ஏக்கம்.

அடுத்த பாகத்தில் கேள்விக்கு விடை கிடைக்கும், ஏக்கம் மறையும் என்ற நம்பிக்கையில் முடிக்கிறேன்.

ஒரு நாடு வளர வேண்டுமென்றால் நாட்டில் உள்ள தொழில் வளர வேண்டும் தொழில் வளந்தாள் மக்கள் மேம்படுவர் வழக்கை சிறப்புறும். தொழில் வளர்ச்சி நாட்டின் வளர்ச்சிக்கு வழி வகுக்கும் என்பதை மிக அழகாக நமது "பாலகுமாரன்" அவர்கள் "உடையார்" புத்தகம் வாயிலாக வழங்கியுள்ளார்.

I have read other works from Balakumaran. Though this is written like a sequel to Ponniyin selvan, this book touches various facets of Raja Raja Cholan's rule. It revolves mostly around how the Big temple is build, the social setup of that period and the engineering aspects. A wonderful piece
