About the author

Balakumaran was born in Pazhamarneri village near Thirukattupalli in Thanjavur district in 1946. As a child, he was highly inspired by his mother, who was a Tamil scholar and a Siromani in Sanskrit, used verses of Sangam and other ancient literature to motivate him when ever he was emotionally down. This created a deep interest in Tamil literature which made literature his passion. His first stories were published in a literary magazine called ‘Ka-Sa-Da-Tha-Pa-Ra’ and for which he was also a founding member, a self-anointed militant literary journal that had been launched with a mission to blaze new trails in modernist literature.

He has also contributed to Tamil periodicals such as Kalki, Ananda Vikatan, Saavi and Kumudam. Later he became a famous Tamil writer, author of over 200 novels, 100 short stories, and dialogue/screenplay writer for over 14 films. His writings are noted for a distinct philosophical and religious tone. He is fondly called 'Ezhuthu Sithar' by his fans. He is a disciple of "Sri Yogi Ram Surath Kumar".

In his many novels he shows immense interest in enlightenment. He is considered as "Maanasiga Guru" for many individuals, who are in search of the formless almighty. His lucid but powerful expressions of man-woman relationship and human-God union is a tribute to mankind.

War between North chalukyas and Cholas is epic.

For some reason, Balakumaran could not sustain the magic that he has done in the first 3 parts of this historical novel in the 5th part. The story roamed around in multiple directions aimlessly, thereby creating the feeling that the author is intent on writing a 6th part. While philosophical discussions and conversations are good In a social novel, it does not suit well in a novel where you are trying to narrate history. People are interested to know what and how it happened.

After 04 slow reads. This the first book in the series which I enjoyed the most. A pacy read. The book deals with the only war scenario of the story. But could have been more war centered rather the pre-planning. May the last book be as good as this or even better.

கிட்டத்தட்ட 250 பக்கங்களுக்கு கதை மாந்தர்கள் பெரும்பாலானோர் போரைப் பற்றியே பேசிக்கொண்டு இருக்கிறார்கள் என்று அயற்சியாக இருந்தது. கடைசி 120 பக்கங்களில் எல்லா தொய்வுகளையும் மறக்கடித்து விட்டார் திரு. பாலகுமாரன் அவர்கள்.

Book 5 has less about the temple and more on the fight with melaisalukyas, the war tactics and preparation. It also talks on the politics behind the war. One can envision the war times of those period through the eyes of the author - balakumaran sir has done a exemplary narration on the same.

In the earlier books, caste related reference looked one sided, but that becomes balanced with this book making the whole plot a much balanced. Politics of family of a king and family challenges that raja raja has to go through are well explained. One could understand the difficulty of a king to be self even with his family.

Kingship is thorn over throne - and king has to be cautious and politically right no matter to whom so ever he speaks could be well understood here. Kings wavering mind and thought process while going to a war, how big a responsibility is his words are well explained through thoughts of raja raja. More than the plot similar to other parts its knowing people and peoples mind, description on the same which makes the book a different read.

Udayar all parts are strongly recommended, this too will not disappoint you - go for it.

பாலகுமாரன் இந்த நாவலில் திடீரென்று கோவில் கட்டுவதிலிருந்து, மேலை சாளுக்கியத்துடன் போருக்கான தேவை, போருக்கு தயாராவது, போர் எவ்வாறு நடைபெறுகிறது என்று வேறு ஒரு தளத்திற்கு கதையை நகர்த்துகிறார். பாலகுமாரன் ஒரு போரை, அதற்கான காரணங்களை, எவ்வாறு ஒரு படை தயாராகிறது என்பதை மிக அருமையாக விளக்குகிறார். நம் கண் முன்னே போர் நிகழ்வதைப் போன்ற ஒரு உணர்வை கொண்டுவருவதில், அவருடைய எழுத்து திறமையை உணர்கிறோம். எப்பேர்பட்ட ஒரு எழுத்தாளர் அவர் என்பதை இந்த கடினமான பகுதிகளை கையாள்வதின் மூலம் அறிகிறோம். இதைப் படித்தவுடன் கலிங்கத்து பரணி படிக்க எண்ணம் ஏற்படுகிறது.
சீராளன், உமையாளின் காதல் காட்சி படுத்தலை அவர் தவிர்த்திருக்கலாம். ஒரு கோடிட்டு காண்பித்துவிட்டிருக்கலாம் என்பது எனது தாழ்மையான கருத்து.
வைணவதாசனின் மரணம் நம்மை மிகவும் பாதிக்கிறது. அதற்கான காரணங்களை கருவூர்தேவர் மூலம், நம்மை சமாதானப் படுத்துகிறார்.
மிக அருமையான ஒரு படைப்பு. பாலகுமாரன் மிகச் சிறந்த எழுத்தாளர் என்பதை மறுபடி மறுபடி பறைசாற்றும் ஒரு படைப்பு.

எல்லோருக்கும் வணக்கம். அதே வழக்கமான பானையில் எழுதப்பட்டுள்ள மற்றொரு பாகம்தான் இந்த உடையார் ஐந்து. இது முழுக்க முழுக்க சோழ - மேலை சாளுக்கியர் யுத்தத்தை பற்றி பேசுகிறது. 70% போர்க்களத்தையும் மீதமுள்ளவை எப்பொழுதும் போல் துணை கதைகளாலும் இப்பாகம் நிரம்பி உள்ளது. போர் காட்சிகள், அதற்கான தயாரிப்புகள், அதற்குரித்தான விவாதங்கள் போன்றவை மிகவும் அட்டகாசமாக எழுதப்பட்டுள்ளது. குறிப்பாக எந்த படை முன்னே செல்வது என்று அரண்மனையில் நடக்கும் விவாதக்காட்சி, அரண்மனையில் இருந்து மக்கள் முன்னிலையில் படை முன்னேறும் காட்சி போன்றவை மிகவும் சுவாரசியமாக எழுதப்பட்டுள்ளது. துணைக் கதைகள் ஒன்று, இரண்டு இருக்கின்றன. குறைகளாக கூற வேண்டுமென்றால் கடைசி கட்டத்தில் வரும் சீராளன் உமையாள் உரையாடல்கள் சிறிது அயர்வை ஏற்படுத்துகிறது. மொத்தத்தில் பாலகுமாரனின் முந்தைய உடையார் பாகங்களைப் போன்று அதே பாணியில் எழுதப்பட்டுள்ள மற்றொரு நல்ல படைப்பு.

Part 5:
Far better than previous parts,though fully deviated from temple building activities. It fully details about the warfare(of course with valid reasons). Symbolic explanation of shiva and his family in chapter 161 where seeralan explaining to umayaal was too good. Finally a page turning part of udaiyaar series. Looking forward for last part.

The core theme of this volume is the battle between Cholas and Chalukyas. The strategic discussions (related to the decision of war) between Raja Raja Chola and the other chieftains are well crafted, once the decision is made, further planning of the war in terms of logistics and battle strategy are dealt very well. But when it comes to execution, that is the actual start of war and further movement into Chalukya kingdom, the story falls flat. The enemy Chalukya king Satyashraya simply withdraws his troops and move into Capital, Manyaked. Also, details related to how the enemy king is gathering intelligence related to Chola invasion and the preparedness on their part is completely missed out. Any war story should necessarily talk about both the sides without which the complete picture does not come out very well. Moreover, temple construction part is almost neglected in this volume with only few progress shown occasionally.

கடந்த இரு பாகங்களைக் காட்டிலும் விறுவிறுப்பு அதிகமாக இருந்ததற்குப் போர் மற்றும் அதற்கான நியத்தங்கள் ஒரு முக்கிய காரணமாயிற்று. போரில் ஏற்பட்ட நிகழ்வுகளும் இழப்புகளும் படிக்கும் பொழுது அதிக விளைவு ஏற்படுத்தத் தவறி விட்டன. பக்கம் பக்கமாகத் தயாராகி வந்த போர் இரண்டு பக்கங்களில் முடிந்தது பெருத்த ஏமாற்றமே.

ராஜராஜருக்கும் ராஜேந்திரனுக்கும் நடைபெறும் உரையாடல்கள் மனிதில் பதிவனவாய் இருந்தன. சில சமயங்களில் சிரிப்பும் துளிர் விடுகின்றது.

சத்தமே இல்லாமல் கோயில் நான்கு நிலைகள் வளர்ந்தது சிறிது ஏமாற்றம் தருகிறது.

ஏதோ உள்ளுக்குள் ஒலித்துக்கொண்டே இருக்கிறது. மிகவும் எதிர்பார்க்கப்பட்ட போர் சற்று எதிர்பார்பபை பூர்த்திசெய்யாமல் போகிறது. வைணவதாசனை இழக்கும்போது உள்ளுக்குள் கோபம் பூண்டு வால் தரித்து மேலை சாளுக்கியத்தை வெட்டி வீழ்த்த துடிக்கிறது. கோபம் கொப்பளிக்க முடிகிறது ஐந்தாம் பாகம்.
