Janette Oke is a Canadian author known for her inspirational fiction, often set in a pioneer era and focused on female protagonists. Her debut novel, Love Comes Softly (1979), became the foundation for a successful series, followed by over 75 other novels. The first book in her Canadian West series, When Calls the Heart (1983), inspired the popular television series of the same name.
Born in Champion, Alberta, to farmers Fred and Amy (née Ruggles) Steeves during the Great Depression, Oke went on to graduate from Mountain View Bible College in Didsbury, Alberta, where she met her future husband, Edward Oke, who later became the president of the college. The couple has four children, including a daughter who has collaborated with Janette on several books.
A committed Evangelical Christian, Oke has authored numerous works exploring themes of faith. She has received various accolades for her contributions to Christian fiction, including the 1992 President's Award from the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association and the 1999 CBA Life Impact Award.

Incredibly sweet and touching story, set in pioneer times. Makes me glad to be alive today and not living with the harsh realities of that time!

I am cleaning out my bookcase and am finally ready to let go of these books. Mine was a fancy (for then) slipcovered paperback set of the first three books. I read them sometime in the mid-80s and then again several times in the early 90s. In my teens, I read a ton of Silhouette, Wildfire, and other teen romances. My Dad was always buying me Christian romance books at the time. I didn't love many of them, but I did fall for this series.

Since I haven't read any of them in 20 or 30 years, it's probably time to let them go. Of course, I did make sure they were available on Kindle just in case. They are. ;0)

I’ve always loved these books. It was one of the first couple books I picked out on my own to read and I remember being overwhelmed then as I am now. Our God is an awesome God and I love the way this family talks about Him and seeks to follow after Him, all while figuring out life “in the wild”.

This is my favorite book series. Every time I read it through it it touches my heart and soul differently.

I was in eighth grade when my teacher required the entire class to read this book and write an alternate ending. I wrote mine like a Shakespearean tragedy.

That was twenty years ago, at a time when I had chosen to read only adventures and mysteries; romance was definitely not my thing and I was quite upset that I was forced to read something so mushy and sentimental as this book. Somehow I grew to enjoy romances, and I eventually read many of the books by this author, though I still prefer more mystery than romance.

This is a wonderful series. This was the first series written by Janette Oke that I read, and it was so excellent it spurred me on to read several of her other series. The books are well-written and focus on the importance of family relationships and how God can help you overcome hurt and loss through His persistent love. In fact, this series is so good that I reread it every few years, with a box of tissue handy.

This is the book that sold so well that it stumped editors and started and huge increase in Christian fiction. Love Comes Softly featured a very interesting situation of a woman who was basically forced to marry immediately after her husband died because she had no other options. This first book is the best in the series. It's not really exceptional writing, but it's a nice story.

By all means buy this book! I've read both books thrice. The rest of the series is wonderful also. I love how God is a part of the series. I love Jesus, the more books with Him , the better! Please, buy this book.

One of only two book series I ever read in high school. I loved spending hours hanging out with Marty and her family on on the plains.

Love Comes Softly introduced the characters of Marty and Clark Davis, whose tragic circumstances brought them to a "marriage of convenience" on the frontier prairies during the mid 1800s.

I really love these books because they teach people that love/marriage isn't all about passion and all that but it is about respect and trust.

I LOVE this entire series! I love how Marty & Clark fall in love. The friendships that are built & how we get to see their children grow & live their lives.

Excellent plot, but very poorly written. I was curious to read Janette Oaks after seeing When Calls the Heart. Honestly, this was a let down.
