This is an audiobook that is based on the television series. This one has The Tenth Doctor and Donna as his companion. In this one, our heroes travel to the historical event of Dunkirk where an alien invasion is also happening and could change the events of history.
This is was a likeable offering from this universe. Catherine Tate is the actress who played Donna and is the one who provides the narration for this audiobook. I have listened to her narrate other audiobooks in this universe and once again she excels at it. She has no problem with her character (obviously) but she really nails the character of The Doctor. The story itself is pretty much standard affair for this universe and is very reminiscent of the story Invasion of the Body Snatchers. There is a minor story of Donna and a love interest and I thought that was the highlight of this book. This universe really didn't go into that aspect and I liked that this book explored it.
One of my favorite things about this universe is how they use science fiction story and intertwine it with a historical event. This book does that so this was right up my alley. Although it never really totally grabbed me like other stories have in this universe. It might be the event of Dunkirk and me being ignorant of this important historical event. I enjoyed the story and it being in audiobook form with Catherine Tate's narration was a plus for me.

The Doctor and Donna crash land in the sea by Dover the night before the evacuation of Dunkirk and it's a really interesting historic-- oh no wait it's another story about soldiers turning into alien bug creatures.
But that's not why this gets one star.
Toward the beginning, the Doctor and co. pursue some sort of creature onto a damaged U-Boat; the creature has attacked and killed everyone on board save one man, who seems ill. It's discovered that the U-Boat is carrying Zyklon B and the Doctor notes it must be "heading to a concentration camp." (Why would a U-Boat be transporting this? Why near Dover?) At this point I paused and was like, "yikes, not something I want evoked by my escapist sci-fi media, why would they even...oh no."
Because I had guessed, correctly, that they were going to use the Zyklon B to kill the aliens.
Yup.
The aliens who, it's later revealed, are the last of their kind, because they are victims of previous genocides, but they need to consume the blood of host species to survive and breed, so...
This story provides a direct connection between Jewish victims of the Holocaust and these blood-drinking aliens (through the specific evocation of Zyklon B, the substance used in Nazi gas chambers) and then proceeds to wipe them out. The Doctor is sad, but still helps.
(Side note: the Doctor is also the one who insists on bringing the injured Nazi back to the English base; this directly leads to him infecting 30 or so more people there and their deaths. If he'd just let the Nazi die it seems the alien problem might have resolved itself, so all the English casualties are also sort of his fault? Great work!)
I want to believe that this was just an unfortunate accident on the part of the writer, editing team, etc. But why would you do this. Why would you do any of this.
Negative a thousand stars.
But that's not why this gets one star.

This audio is very similar to the previous story 'Pest Control'. Both about alien creatures who take over the bodies of soldiers. I didn't enjoy Tate's narration in this one. Usually she can do a good tenth Doctor impression. But both the Doctor and Donna weren't right. I don't know how you can't do your own voice for your character, but there you go.

January 2, 2024Currently updating my reads for the end of 2023, I listened to this and a bunch of other Big Finish Doctor tales (some twice) towards the end of the year, mostly because I was too busy thinking about other things to focus on new stories and the comfort of the familiar voices was a welcome relief from other stresses. Unfortunately I have left it too long to give any story-specific details, but I will inevitably listen to these many more times in future and will hopefully be able to say something more substantial. Suffice it to say that these are just excellent. Production quality is top notch and the storylines are as good and sometimes even better than the TV episodes.

I thought this one was really good. The only problem I had with it was that The Doctor was a bit too...Doctor-y. Most of what The Doctor was saying was in Doctor-ese (Well this, no well this, okay well... / BRILLIANT / Think, Think, Think, et cetera). After a while it became ridiculously easy to predict exactly which "Doctor Phrase" was going to occur.

An exciting production by BBC Audio. I love the 1940 setting with the Kriegsmarine and Royal Navy, with a good cast of supporting characters. Often I wondered... how are they going to get out of this one? I particularly appreciate the author's explorations of human compassion throughout the action-driven story.

Standard stuff - earth threatened by 'orrible aliens, Donna gets a brief romance, base under siege; what drags it down, unfortunately, is that the base under siege is Dover immediately before Dunkirk, and my suspicion of disbelief is rather shattered by the idea that an alien assault and massive loss of personnel would not disrupt the intricate planning of such a key operation. If you do a historical story for laughs, make sure it is funny; if you do it didactically, as is the point here, you need more verisimilitude than this."

The TARDIS crashes into the ocean while chasing an entity through the time vortex. It is 1940 and the Doctor and Donna are at a secret Royal Navy installation. The entity they were pursuing is a parasite which takes over some of the men and is trying to spawn. Catherine Tate is a fantastic narrator and the story is complete with action, horror, some obviously brilliant Doctor moves and courageous human moments - which is Who at its best. Oh and a human villain that is completely vile. Loved it

i didn't like this one as much as the previous story. catherine tate read wonderfully + i can't fault her narration at all, but the story itself started to drag a bit around the middle mark. there were also a lot of characters, and it might just be me being incredibly stupid (not unlikely!), but i kept getting confused over which character was which (although i think this was made worse by the fact it was an audiobook, not a physical copy).
the plot felt quite predictable + very similar to other doctor who stories: some kind of "parasite" creature infects the humans + takes over their bodies/minds. admittedly, it was pretty creepy at times, but i am somebody with a pretty humungous fear of any bug/insect/parasite/worm/anything.
the scenes between the doctor + donna, and those between donna + the soldier, were definitely the saving grace. they were very sweet (and/or bittersweet also) + written pretty well with regards to characterisation, despite a few small hiccups.

However, I had a spare credit from Audible going, and this was part of a BOGOF offer going on (and in a compilation of such stories), so I thought 'why not'?
Read/performed by Catherine Tate during the Donna-as-companion-era of the TV show, I could easily see this as being produced for such (with the occasional incidental music and sound effects aiding the immersion). This particular entry is WW2 set (just before the Dunkirk evacuation), and really falls into the classic 'base under siege' storyline of several Dr Who episodes - enjoyable enough, yes, but not what I would consider as top tier.

Trying not to nitpick because I loved every second of this (!) but what was the “we are not who we say we are” thing even about? It feels like they forgot a plot twist somewhere, maybe.
And I swear the Doctor has been in this general area at this exact date and time at least two or three times now! There are about 25 of them all running around during WW2 and they either need to declare those years off limit for good or start writing the most chaotic multi-Doctor story ever 😅
Anyway, this was my favourite audio story so far. They always get me with the historical fiction 🙈

I hated this book. I wanted to love it. I thought I would love it, but I did not like it. Don't get me wrong though, Catherine Tate did an AMAZING job. If I rated the narrator separately, oh Catherine Tate would get 5 stars no doubt from me. The voices were amazing and I loved her character, but I did not like the story at all. I don't know if it was a tad too creepy for me or I just wasn't vibing with the story, but I was sad to not like the story. It didn't flow as well as the first audiobook did. I did like some of the sound effects, but not as much as the first one.

This might be my favorite of the three BBC audiobooks of this era I’ve listened to. Takes place before Dunkirk, and it’s interesting when one has the hindsight of The Doctor knowing Winston Churchill and having met Cicero. The Doctor mentions Cicero having bad breath, and I couldn’t help thinking of when the Fifth Doctor met Big Finish’s Cicero. While there are sound effects, I was surprised there was no gunfire sound when it seemed appropriate.

I listened to this while baking DW-themed biscuits for the 60th Anniversary of Doctor Who, which wasn't a bad way to spend an afternoon. I really enjoyed this one! Third one in the series and the first that didn't get weirdly fatphobic with its villain. And a bittersweet romantic subplot for Donna! (I'm a sucker for a doomed romance)

I really didn't like the Doctor in this book. Good, brave, honest men died in the most horrible way and he makes a joke? Disgusting. Donna was amazing, that's true, but the Doctor deserved a hard kick in the unmentionables.

Wasted potential with far too many disparate elements and no real reason for the chosen historical setting and characters. Only thing of particular interest are the aliens, but the next story in the series, the rising night, took the concept of a near extinct species attempting to convert humanity into a new population with so much more pathos. Now that I think about it, that's also the plot of pest control. Weird!

One of my least favorites thus far out of the short stories. Still a good listen, the story line just didn't catch my attention as much as the others. A historical trip back to the past, most of the story being set in or around a U-boat.

Solid WW II story with a broader cast of characters and a dense, somewhat sad plot. Once again brilliantly narrated by Catherine Tate.

I loved Donna in this and the narration was amazing, but for me, the story was a little too chaotic to work really well as an audiobook. I could imagine this as a really good TV episode though.
