After sixteen printings in its first edition and two in this updated version, this best seller remains America's most complete guide to the hidden asset that isn't taught in business schools - the personal behavior that can make you or break you in today's competitive workplace. Letitia Baldrige takes the reader from the first interview and first day at work through all the complex knowledge we need to maneuver through the ranks and rise to the top.
This is an excellent reference for those that are jumping into the basics of etiquette in the work place. Given that it is written in 1993, much of what she is writing about is still highly applicable today. While I'm sure many of the items that she mentions - particularly those related to example letters - can be found on the internet with ease. However, the finer points for which Baldrige provides her own color is quite fantastic.
I really enjoyed reading all of it. Gave me lots to think about. I probably want to follow this up with further readings on either more specific topics within etiquette, or with an even more modern treatment of the subject; as etiquette appears to be modernizing as quickly as other areas of the world.
I enjoyed greatly the extensive parts of the book on statesman type topics, though i will probably never be exposed to needing to understand state functions, table seating, and hierarchy. Fascinating none-the-less.
Although this was the updated version for modern times, there was still way too much 1950's. Overall, some good advice but many of the details are too stuffy shirt for today's workplaces. Plus she really focused on life if you were part of an embassy ...in which case much of the stuffy etiquette rules may apply in those stogy situations. Would not recommend as there have to be better books out there on point.
