Thieves have been operating a huge car theft ring in a small Georgia town, crossing county lines. Atlanta detective Mark Bradley comes down to investigate. On his first night in town he runs into an old flame he’s never forgotten. Mark met Jake a few years before, and they shared a night of wild passion. There was only one problem—Mark was married. Jake is young, tough and has a giant chip on his shoulder when it comes to Mark’s betrayal, and Mark has a lot of explaining to do to obtain his forgiveness. When Mark discovers Jake has a connection to the theft ring, things get even more complicated. Mark has to solve the case before Jake gets in way too deep.
Wow, that was relatively horrible. We have Mark, a cop, and Jake, a mechanic-type who had one night together a couple years ago and meet again in a bar. Then we get the honeys and babys. Oh, did I mention Mark is married to a woman? He is. Oh, and he's there investigating a car theft ring which we don't really hear a whole lot about until the end. And insta-love. And Mark putting a gun in Jake's mouth when he catches him with another guys dick in his mouth...20 minutes after he left. What.the.fuck?!? I don't really have words to describe this anymore.
Sorry, DNF. I would have liked to know before buying the book that Mark "the jerk" is STILL married when he meets up with the one-night-stand he supposedly never forgot...real mood killer for me.
I really battle with the rating on this between 3 and 4. Mark really makes me angry pretty much through the whole story. He seems like a user and has trouble being honest about himself. He has cheated on his wife emotionally because he already clearly knew how he felt about himself before he even married her and then cheats physically with Jake and other men he encounters. He is also cheating on Jake in way by admitting he felt something special from the first encounter but continues to be with his wife and others. I mean they hook back up because Mark is coming in looking for a one-night stand. I could tell his feelings for Jake were real and that sort of redeemed him a bit in my eyes but to the end he still seems to be so much more about himself and his feelings and his convenience than concern for Jake and what he's needs and wants might actually be. You hope with time Mark can relax and just let the relationship develop but a part of me kind of hopes Jake moves on to someone who will love him more unconditionally.
This was my first M/M romance and I loved it. In fact, I was so invested in the characters, I couldn't put it down. Jake and Mark were drawn in depth. I felt I knew them personally. Their foibles and idiosyncrasies made them real. Their attraction was hot and the tension between them palpable. I was rooting for them from the start. The suspense toward the end of the book kept me hanging but all was resolved beautifully at the end. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a well-written, realistic love story with a great ending.
