James Montgomery Boice was a Reformed theologian, Bible teacher, and pastor of Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia from 1968 until his death in 2000. He was also president and cofounder of the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals, the parent organization of The Bible Study Hour on which Boice was a speaker for more than thirty years.

Pastoral and devotional commentary. Each chapter reads like a sermon, and Boice writes with conviction.

A very helpful commentary for difficult books of the Bible. I consider some of his perspectives outdated , although helpful in empathizing with the baby boomer generation.

It did take me a long time to finish this book. I started in September of last year and it is 10 months later when I finished it. You might think it was because it was not that great a book and I was just being stubborn, unwilling to quit. Not true. It was a good book. I have no real excuse for taking so long to finish it. I chose to read it because I wanted to know where the prophecies of these books fit into the history of Israel and I did learn quite a bit about that. But the blessing of the book came as I read in every chapter Pastor Boice's practical applications to the lives of all God's people / to me personally. As a pastor, he didn't just want people to know the historical context of the books; he wanted us to learn how what God was teaching His people Israel in that time applies to us today. That is why it such a good book.

This was a very awesome book to read. It opened my understanding and enjoyment of reading the minor prophets. I would highly suggest this to any Christian. The author applies every book to our lives right now and they become alive and important to the Bible.

I read this book for a class. There is some crazy stuff in it. However, it really opened up the prophets to me. If you can read critically and get past some of the insane stuff, I'd recommend this to most people.

3.5 stars. Solid read full of good information, but a bit too “sermon-esque” for my taste.
