A collection of classic and some not so classic zombie horror: alternate history, mind probing cephalopods, apiary loving red necks and more are ground up and stuffed into this tight intestinal sleeve that any zombie fan will love.
Includes the following zombie short stories: "They Rode Personal Transportation Vehicles" "Lee's Decision" "Ten Count" "The Crick"
All these stories were surprisingly good, but for me "Ten Count" was the best of the lot. This story included just the right amount of horror and tragedy. But all the stories in this indie book were well worth the time to read.
This book is available for free over at Barnes & Noble, go and get it, you won't be sorry.
"Ten Count" is easily the best of the book, and a solid story on its own. "They Rode Personal Transportation Vehicles" delivers on the promise of new flavors in zombie lit with a fair amount of humor, but the characters are mostly flat and uninteresting. "Dummies" isn't great, but the concept is one that feels fresh to me.
After a few pages I skipped "Lee's Decision". Even for a story about zombies, I was unable to suspend disbelief enough to accept the awful caricatures of historical figures in a period and place I'm so extensively familiar with. I can't pass judgment on the story's quality; I was too bothered to give it a full read.
"Henderson Hell Machine" is the final story of the book and I am not quite finished with it (pre-emptive finishing post here just to get it out of the way before I forget all my thoughts). It reads like a combination of several horror tropes and doesn't feel like it brings anything new to them at all. The latter half is going to take more effort than it should.
All in all there's a bunch of fresh ideas here, but too many recycled ones, and although it's mostly fun there's a lot here that's just mediocre. I'd be willing to check out more from this author, but I can only recommend three of the five stories in this particular volume- and therefore, three out of five stars.
Five short 'Zombie' stories but so much more. I have a Nook and downloaded this because the title made me laugh and to be honest, the main reason was that it promised a few frights for free. Imagine my surprise when I realized that the author was talented, interesting, and I couldn't put the book down. The titles of the short stories are 1. They Rode Personal Transportation Vehicles, 2. Dummies, 3. Lee's Decision (this one still haunts me because I'm an avid reader of books about Lincoln and the Civil War), 4. Ten Count, and 5. Henderson Hell Machine. The plots are twisted, surprising, and hard to let go of. I have 'purchased' a number of free e-books and I found them entertaining enough but somewhat disappointing, but hey, I figured what do you expect for something that you didn't have to pay for? I was wrong, wrong, wrong on this score. I told my daughter how great this book was and she asked if this was the same author that wrote one she was enjoying called Rattlesnake Necktie. She advised me to find it and download it because it was free also. I looked it up and sure enough . . . same author. Don't miss reading a book by Sean E. Graham. He's really great and it's FREE! Download his books at Smashwords.com right now.
I love horror and I love short stories; needless to say- loved this book. Sean Graham reads a lot like a Stephen King short story with a little of Joe Hill's flair for the gruesome. A must read for the diehard fan of horror shorts. Look forward to reading more from Graham.
