I wonder if it's still good when it's not so relevant to the reader personally.

I read this book years ago and recently found it in my drawer and reviewed it. It had many excellent points in it that I can still relate to but I have found the language has changed over the years as to what he was talking about. He is describing Codependency - and there are many current books that discuss this AND show ways of dealing with it. Although I did liked it at the time, I wouldn't recommend reading it at this point.
