A perfect first book for the beginning woodcarver; Butz has created a complete course on the subject. He covers all the main topics, from tools and how to sharpen them, to woods and finishes, and the elements of design. He presents the various carving styles in logical progression, beginning with whittling. He moves smoothly on to chip carving, then relief carving, and wildlife carving in the round. As an added bonus, he also covers lettering and architectural carving.

Each chapter features plenty of photographs, drawings, and diagrams, to support the clear and understandable text. The featured projects are shown on a grid for easy enlargement. (A large format copier makes this even easier.)

Rick Butz is a wonderful all around woodcarver, and if you’re just starting out, you couldn’t have a better teacher.
