Covers the theory of electromagnetic fields in matter, and the theory of macroscopic electric and magnetic properties of matter. There is a considerable amount of new material particularly on the theory of the magnetic properties of matter and the theory of optical phenomena with new chapters on spatial dispersion and non-linear optics.
Out of all the book collections out there, Dau's Course of Theoretical Physics just might be my favorite. (Yes, even more so than Feynman's Lectures on Physics!)
These books are very concise and present the subject in an efficient manner. Some hate it, but I think it works perfectly for what the books are supposed to be: almost graduate level textbooks. I highly suggest reading Vol. 2 before dwelling into Vol. 8. My favorite was certainly the chapter on Ferromagnetism and Antiferromagnetism. L&L efficiently explain this topic in ONE chapter, for which many rivaling authors take several hundred pages to explain, and yet still fail to grasp the clarity/beauty involved in the physics. This book is my favorite in the whole series, closely followed by Vol. 2 and Vol. 1 respectively.
