Love Sucks

Rate this book
Mailee is about to answer the age-old "How much love would a love sucker suck if a love sucker fell in love?"

Mailee’s greatest wish is to be an ordinary teenage girl, but thanks to one stupid demon gene she consumes love from any human she touches. The only person she can touch is her best friend Eric, a hot lust-drainer. Except for slight hand-brushes to keep from starving, she avoids humans.

Until she meets Logan, a diabetic and the first human who could understand Mailee’s diet angst. She grows closer to him, but each touch risks his love for her. If she wants a normal relationship, she’ll have to become human. But the only way requires her to free and be infected by demons representing the Seven Deadly Sins. Sloth? Pride? No problem. But when wrath-infected Mailee punches the cheerleader who’s making eyes at Eric, she realizes getting through the sins might cost too much.

Like Eric. Because if she turns human, he’ll be the only one she can’t touch.

Love Sucks is the story of Mailee. She is a Haustrix, which means that she has inherited a demon gene which causes her to suck out or consume people's love if she touches them. She can drain anyone completely out of their love for one another or anything they are thinking about at the moment. So Mailee is a Haustrix and Eric is a Haustor, the male version of the demon and the only person she can safely touch.

I found Mailee's character to be relatable. She is introverted and likes to keep to herself because of her abilities. She is afraid she'll drain out the love out of anybody who loves her and so stays away from everyone except Eric and their friend Justin who have similar abilities. I liked getting to know about the story of her older brother Matt and what happened with him. Though I would have loved getting in a bit more deeper there.

Then Mailee meets Logan. He is a diabetic and he can understand Mailee's anguish over her diet. Mailee cannot eat normal human food. She has to drain out a little love out of somebody to satisfy her hunger. As Mailee starts growing closer to Logan she hates the demon part of herself and wants to find a way to become human.

And so she has to release and be systematically infected by demons representing the Seven Deadly Sins. The book goes with how each demon affects Mailee for sometime. As her journey to become human continues, her feelings get conflicted over Eric and Logan. There were some situations in which I felt Mailee acted immature. It did not go with her nature as described earlier.

Love Sucks was a nice read. I liked the conversations between Logan and Mailee. Logan was sweet and caring. Mailee acted a bit too needy with Eric. But I guess when you take into consideration her past with her brother Matt, it gets justified. The concept of Love Sucks was really unique and something I've not read before with the whole Haustrix thing. It was an interesting read.

I'm going to be a hipster and say I READ THIS BEFORE IT WAS PUBLISHED.

I am absolutely in love with this book. Mailee, the Haustor who draws love away from anyone she touches, is an achingly real character. She's awkward and self-conscious, but at the same time, knows exactly what she wants and fights to get it. (Seriously, if you make it through the first half of this book without wanting to give Mailee a big hug, I'm really concerned about your soul.) She's completely relateable while being completely alien, and that's a rare balance to find. The book is fast-paced, but still gives enough time to breathe and get to know the characters. Without giving away too much of the plot, the way everything changes and everything Mailee has to go through is intense, and towards the end I basically could not stop reading to go to bed.

Full disclosure: I do know this author (and she's WONDERFUL, btw,) but even if I didn't, I would still adore this book. Five well-deserved stars, and I cannot wait to add this book to my Kindle!

Naturally, I'm not really going to review my own book, but there's news! Love Sucks was chosen as an Editor's Top Pick by my publisher. One of seven of their books to be given that distinction. Some editors out there must love my little book. Hope you do too :)

I really enjoyed this book. It was a brand new idea, a great plot line, with fun characters, what's not to like about that?

The story is about a teenage girl who is a Haustrix. This is something I have never heard of before so I was quite eager and excited to read and find out more. I love taking in new fantasy ideas and lore, so much fun! So a Haustrix is essentially a demon, the female version. The male version is called a Haustore. These demons live by feeding off other people's emotions. Mailee in particular feeds off love. Nothing else sustains her. This is something you come into in your younger teenage years. The only reason she found out at all was watching her older brother go through it. So she was a little prepared when it happened to her.

The things she has to go through are mind boggling. I can't even come close to imagining what it would be like to have this curse. Her older brother Matt didn't know what was happening to him. He accidentally drained his parents of their love for each other, as well as their love for their own children. Can you imagine holding the weight of something like that on your shoulders?! Unthinkable. So Matt happens to find a way to become human, and attempts it of course. But something goes wrong in the process and he runs away. Leaving Mailee behind. But they have a good friend named Eric who is also a Haustore and Matt asks him to look out for her before he takes off. So she is not completely alone. Eric is different though because he feeds of Lust.

Again, all I can think about is how hard it would be to be Mailee. She can't touch anybody, at all, in any way! No kisses or hugs or hand holding, can't go to a doctor, anything! She lives in almost constant starvation because she hates to feed off people, she gets nibbles by grazing fingers here and there and that's it. Then she finds out why her brother Matt left and what he was up to before he ran. Mailee of course is eager to become human as well, and so she embarks on the same quest as her brother. The details of which you will have to read about to find out more.

But it was intense, emotional, and a really interesting journey. Mailee makes new friends, maybe even loves a boy. Which of course makes the end goal of becoming human even more important. But when things start getting quite out of hand, will it be to much to handle? Will she be able to shoulder the guilt it comes with and see it through to the end? Or is she even capable?

As I said before, I love a brand new paranormal fix. There is so much out there, and there is also a lot of the same so something completely new is just awesome! I really enjoyed the story, I read through it fairly quickly despite not getting a whole lot of free time to read and I would definitely recommend it without hesitation. Mailee's character was someone I would want to be friends with, she kind of reminds me of myself. She is kind of anti social, stands outside the accepted norm. Of course she kind of made it that way, she distances herself from people, and with good reason. Despite being a demon, she is actually more human than some humans I know haha. She could just go around feasting and draining, but she is loaded with humanity. And she tries to protect those she loves and keep everyone safe. And when she does mess up, she is really hard on herself. Which makes me feel even more terrible for her because it' s not like there is anything she can do about it.

Great story, pulled lots of emotion from me, mainly sympathy. But lots of other things to :). I think you will like it!

Love Sucks, especially when you're different than everyone else in the world, especially when you're a teen Haustrix (an extremely rare demon who feeds off of human emotions) and haven't experienced real love and can't touch anyone for fear of draining their emotions -- their love -- for another person.

I enjoyed this book! First off, I thought the premise was unique and the main character's challenge was also unique: How to survive by draining enough human emotion from people to live, but not so much as to drain them of their capacity for love.

I felt a connection to the main character/narrator Mailee almost immediately, as well as to fellow Haustor (love-sucking demon) Eric, and also the diabetic boy she befriends, Logan, who bonds with her because of their shared feelings of being different and isolated because of their respective conditions. Mailee's feelings of being solitary and different, weird, and a loner make her a relatable character. How many teens have similar feelings? (Raising hand. I know I did.)

The story has a love triangle, and a surprise ending (at least for me).

I'd definitely recommend this book and am looking forward to reading more by this author.

I received a copy of this book for an honest review.

Mailee Jones life is one big epic love suck. Mailee is a Haustrix which means she has a demon gene which causes her to suck love out of anyone she touches. If she doesn't receive her daily dose of love from the students or people around her she'll starve to death. Mailee's life revolves around cheering all of her close friends on, doing the cheerleaders homework, and having no friends. Then one day a new student arrives with love flowing off of her in waves. The girl; Joanne Sparo wants to become Mailee's new and pretty much only friend. Despite her better judgement she decides to do just that become her friend and never touch her. Although their friendship is somewhat strained they find friendship in one another and soon Mailee meets Logan, Joanne's diabetic step brother. Logan and Mailee soon become fast friends, connecting over each others weird and crappy diets. Soon those Mailee realizes she will be he only Haustrix for her long time crush Eric who used to be best friends with Mailee's brother before he skipped town. The only person she'll have left is Justin, a friend of Eric's whom she has never trusted.

One day Mailee finds a box of old things detailing a way for a Haustrix to become human. After finding this out Mailee wants nothing more than to become human. To be able to love without fear of one day accidentally taking away the other persons love for her. She sets off on a mission with Logan and Eric to become human. The task; become infected with the Seven Deadly Sins and then be freed from her curse. However, the curse is costing Mailee more than she thinks she can handle and she soon realizes that if Mailee becomes human she may never touch Eric again, the boy she has always loved.

After I finished this book my first thought were a tad annoyed at the ending, however thinking about the ending a bit longer I realized she made the right choice. I have to say I did enjoy this book and could not put it down. There are a lot of great scenes and I loved how Logan and Mailee bonded over their crappy diets. One thing that did bother me was Eric. He was a total jerk to Mailee most of the time but other times he was like prince charming and what he said near the end of the book ticked me off. Other than that? Awesome!

This book was offered to me by Musa Publishing for an honest review.

When I first read the title to this book, I made the assumption that it would be a story involving vampires. Then I read the blurb and realized my mistake. This tale is definitely not about fanged creatures which drink blood to survive. However, having said that, the protagonist (along with several of her friends) does have an unusual diet, one that does not include human food.

Mailee (Mai) is a Haustrix (yeah, I didn’t know what that was at first either), a girl with a demon gene who needs to feed off the love of others in order to survive. She has two close friends - Eric and Justin - who are also Haustors, and therefore the only two people she can touch without worrying about draining them of their emotions. Eric feeds off lust, while Justin feeds off inhibitions.

Mai desperately wants to be human, and as the story unfolds, she discovers a way to make her wish come true. It involves using a special bracelet to release seven demons which each infect her with a deadly sin. Fortunately for Mailee, these infections are temporary and only last for a short time.

Just before she starts her journey to become human, Mai meets Logan, a diabetic who understands what it means to be different. Discovering her true identity and her desire to change, he decides to help her. Since forever, Mai has had a crush on Eric, but now with Logan in the picture, she feels torn between the two. As she nears the end of her quest, Mai must make a choice - give up on her dream and remain a Haustrix so that she can be with Eric, or become human and start a life with Logan. What will she choose?

I quite enjoyed this story. It was different from my usual paranormal reads - angels, vampires, werewolves, ghosts, etc… The writing style was good, easy to follow, although towards the end, the scenes seemed a little rushed.

"How much love would a love sucker suck if a love sucker fell in love?"

After reading this part in the description, I was not so sure about this book. It was just a strange description. Once I got past that part, I enjoyed the book.

The premise of this story was creative and unlike anything I have read in the past. I never knew quite what was going to happen. I wished there was a little more background on their powers, why they were all different and how their race lived.

The storyline was really cute and I wasn't sure whether to root for Eric or Logan. They both seemed to genuinely care for Mailee, they both were hot and they both had their own issues.

I wished the sins were a little harder to find, more of a challenge I guess. They affected Mailee, but not for a very long time. It seemed like they were gone as fast as they were there. Never the less, I enjoyed watching each of the sins being released and how they affected Mailee and those around her.

There was a satisfying ending to the book and I like story lines ending up wrapped in a neat bow. It is a great upper YA paranormal read. I have to rate this unique book four stars for its creativeness.

Was not sure I was going to like this book. Just decided to go ahead and read it. Found out I could not put the book down. I wish it could have maybe turned into a series with more details on each sin. I would have given it 5 stars but I did not really like the ending.

I happened upon this book on sale when Musa Publishing announced it was closing, and because the author is a moderator at AbsoluteWrite. The premise immediately struck me as something I haven't really seen before.

For the most part, Collins delivers. From the beginning, the writing is engaging, and it's so easy to keep turning the pages. Mailee may be a shy and fearful character, but it kind of makes sense, given how she's grown up and the fact that anyone she touches will lose their love. (Personally didn't love the name spelled that way, but that's an author's prerogative.) Sometimes she reacts immaturely, and I wasn't always her biggest fan, but I liked her. There's a love triangle, but I kind of liked it--more on that later.

A few of my qualms, however. It wasn't clearly enough explained to me that Haustors can touch each other without a problem--for a while, I assumed Eric would drain Mailee's lust and she would drain his love, and I was very confused at their easygoing friendship, though I liked it. And despite the quest to becoming human being explained twice--which I thought was unnecessary--I never totally got the reason why the Sins would only be released temporarily, and how the bracelet worked, why it would be deactivated if all the Sins were released in a week. I wished that the explanation had been clearer. I also do wish the book had taken place over a longer span of time.

Also, I can't believe The love triangle was pretty well done. I liked both guys, who were both good guys, for different reasons, and Collins doesn't resort to revealing one of them to be a jerk in order to show why Mailee fits with one of them better. I was actually rooting for the other guy--but I liked them both so much that I felt quite torn. I still wish it had resolved better , because I really liked him and I feel like I got no closure as a reader. I did see why she ended up , so it wasn't a total surprise, but I was still rooting until the end.

Logan also occasionally had moments where the dialogue was awkward/he just sounded much older than he actually is, but not in a good way. He would just call Mailee "sweetie" and "honey" when they were not going out, which is not awful, per se, but it seemed both kind of out of character and somewhat awkward.

And Mailee actually gets attacked by four guys in three different incidents throughout the novel. It doesn't totally defy credibility because the situations she was in were rather unusual, but it still felt like--well, a lot. I don't feel like huge guys are always walking around trying to beat up/assault tiny girls. I know it does happen, but this felt like a lot.

Also, I liked the start with Joanne's friendship, but that quickly takes a backseat, just FYI. I didn't mind so much, because I liked Eric and Logan a lot, but just a note that the romance is definitely at the forefront--more so than the world building, which is there but minimal.

Overall, I enjoyed it a lot and I thought it worked, but I also think it could have been a lot better. I'd love to see Collins revise this and publish it again, if she ever so chooses, given that Musa has closed and given the authors their rights reversions.

P.S. I agree with another reviewer that that first line is awesome: "Eric was the biggest playboy trapped in a virgin's body that I would ever know."

My Thoughts:

1. Mailee was not a fun character to read about. She cried so much over absolutely nothing; it was pathetic. She was also naive, and sometimes really stupid.

2. The plot was interesting. Certain things seemed a bit too convenient, but it was still interesting.

3. Omg I love how Mailee and Logan first met. That cracked me up :D

4. There was an info-dump somewhere near the beginning which was done in a very confusing and far too convenient manner.

5. I loved the romance because it was built up gradually. It wasn't just, "BAM! I'm in love with you." The author took her time to develop their relationship, and made it more convincing.

6. The writing was often extremely confusing. There were lots of places where I felt like the author should have spent more time delving in deeper into the scene. Many places were just skimmed over, and if they hadn't been, I probably would have enjoyed the book more. For example, near the end, they were up in a mountain when some bad stuff happened, but everything was so rushed. There was no tension, and the writing didn't make much sense. I could understand what was going on, but the scene wasn't written very well.

7. The story didn't end as I'd hoped it would, so that made me kind of sad.

Overall, it was an okay book. I liked it, for the most part.

Jammer!

A fun, fast-paced fantasy with an interesting premise! I beta-read an early draft of this book, and it was terrific to see how much it has changed in the process of becoming a real book.
