Published to accompany a major touring exhib ition from January 1999 to September 1999, this book focuses on the collection of Victorian art built up by Merton Russe ll-Cotes and now held in the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and M useum, Bournemouth. '
The book is published in association with a 1999 exhibition of a selection of paintings from Russell-Cotes Gallery at Dahesh Museum New York and Frick Museum Pittsburgh. Russell-Cotes, being a reasonably unknown and small gallery, could compete with any top British art museum for its representation of Victorian art - Tate and National included. In 1999, the Gallery was undergoing renovations, and they sent a set of paintings on the tour. The exhibition had fewer than 50 paintings, but each is represented reasonably well in the book with detailed provenance, a brief story, and a color photo (not always a full page). The book also has three introductory articles about the collector, including one focused on Edwin Long (Russell-Cotes Gallery is the major holder of Long’s paintings). Overall, a useful and informative book especially since there are no other options - it is the only recent book about the gallery that includes color reproductions of the art. The only thing to be sorry about is that only a fraction of the paintings from the gallery were included in the exhibition and the book and most not even shown full page.
