On the first day of summer where does everyone head? To the Flip Flop Shop, of course, in this riotous tribute to the season's favorite footware. Soon the whole town's flipping and flopping. At the pet shop, on the beach, in the rain and the glop, everyone's doing the Flip Flop Bop! Here is a joyous celebration of summertime fun, with bouncy, rhyming text that will have kids flip-flopping till they drop (doo-wop doo-wop)!
Review:Children's Literature Three children and three animals run away from the school house and into summer vacation as they head straight to "The Flip Flop Shop." Once school is out these kids cannot wait to get rid of all shoes and socks and purchase mountains of flip flops, which they rapidly distribute around the town. The rhyming, rhythmic text sends readers "bopping" through each page as members of this picture-book community join in wearing the summer fashion shoes. The cartoonlike pictures add to the fantastic scheme of summer vacation revolving around children buying flip flops for the entire neighborhood. Also, with pictures and text crowding the pages, the author adds to the carefree yet hectic attitude of summer vacation as well as the desired freedom for feet and children. This picture book, when read aloud, will complement a unit on shoes; however, some of the rhymes contain absurd non-words such as "kazoobaloobadippy" which might need practice before the actual story time. This is an easy choice for children with a fetish for feet or flip flops. 2005, Roaring Brook Press, Ages 3 to 7. —Joella Peterson

Notes: Play with words. Some rhyme, end of the year book
Flip Flop Bop by Matt Novak features very few words and many busy pictures. Summer has arrived and the children head to the flip flop shop and wear their new flip flops all around town. Finally, it is time for a bath and bed. This book would be appropriate for readers between two and five. It features a few rhyming sets of words to describe each page. Children will enjoy poring over the detailed and busy illustrations. It would be appropriate to work with a child to describe what characters in each picture are doing. The rhyming words would be appropriate for developing phonemic awareness and the large colorful print can help young readers develop print awareness.
This book can be used for a math lesson of estimation in 1st- 3rd grade.
The students could flip through the book quickly and guess how many flip flops are in the entire book, or for younger grades just one page. When reading through the book have a flip flop counter to tally up the amount of flip flops the class sees when reading through the book.
A fine summer story, but nothing special, in my opinion, especially in the writing. And I was kind of put off by the two layers of pain on the faces - gave some of them an over-powdered look that was strange.
This is a great book for beginner readers to read. This book is full of short vowel words that also rhyme. This would also be a great book to read aloud to students before you begin a short vowel or rhyming word lesson.
