Putting Women in Their Place: Moving Beyond Gender Stereotypes in Church and Home

Rate this book
Recent declarations by the Southern Baptist Convention concerning male and female roles have ignited major controversies among Baptists. The place of women in Baptist churches and homes, as well as employment restrictions upon SBC college and seminary teachers, chaplains, missionaries, and denominational employees, have thrust the issue to the forefront of Baptist life.

In Putting Women in Their Place: Moving Beyond Gender Stereotypes in Church and Home, twelve respected authors address key questions for Baptists desiring a biblically based and theologically sound discussion of gender issues. For students and teachers, laity and clergy, this text will serve as a basic introduction to the proper place of women in church, home, and society.

Contributors: William E. Hull, Julie Penniginton-Russell, Charles Wellborn, Gladys S. Lewis, Dan Gentry Kent, Audra E. Trull, Ruth Ann Foster, Catherine Clark Kroeger, Sheri Adams, Joe E. Trull, Karen G. Massey, Fisher Humphreys.

The debate over whether women can occupy positions of authority or service in a Christian church has been debated for probably 2000 years. There are good arguments that are made on both sides of the issue, both finding perceived support in the Bible. It is an issue that is certainly timely, but one that causes dissension and discord.

This book takes a firm "yes" position and provides detailed Biblical and cultural support for that position. It only gives slight attention to the opposing view, so don't read this expecting a balanced and fair representation of both sides of this issue.

Still, it is well researched and written.

Several solid arguments to support women in ministry - a good start for those who are just digging in to the different sides of this discussion.
