When Cass finds her partner lying on the floor of their New Orleans tattoo shop in a pool of blood, the world as she knows it ends. Alex, her ink-slinging Michelangelo, lies in the hospital comatose, perhaps permanently.
Lacking faith in the police and their ability to find whoever shot Alex, Cass puts the word out that she's seeking justice, justice she will willingly pay for.
When a Voodoo mambo offers the services of her mysterious godson, Cass finds herself stepping into a dark, deadly world, one that she may not walk out of again intact.
This is a short story set in the world of my Hoodoo novels, Black Dust Mambo and Black Heat Loa, and features Gabrielle LaRue and Devlin Daniels from those books. It is not necessary to read the novels in order to enjoy the story.
"Phoenix is a beautiful storyteller--her prose flows like poetry." -- the BN SciFi & Fantasy Blog
Adrian Phoenix writes urban fantasy and is the author of The Maker's Song series, (currently working on book 6) and the Hoodoo series, the third book, Black Moon Mojo and the forthcoming Sons of Darkness series. Her humorous paranormal Thinning the Herd was released January 2016.
She lives in Springfield, Oregon in a zombie-free home (except when meeting deadlines) with three cats, Keats, Emily, and Raven and has two sons, three grandchildren and three granddogs.
She loves to read and see movies, enjoys hiking with her granddog, Cielo, (immortalized in Black Dust Mambo and Black Heart Loa), and hanging out with friends.
She also loves creepy things and yearns to go on a paranormal investigation. She also hopes to do a haunted tour one day.
She also loves, loves, loves music – and anything by Trent Reznor is high on the list. She also loves to hear from my readers and fans, So please feel free to contact her!
3.5 Great short story. After losing her mother to an unknown killer, Cass wants revenge at least for her partner Alex who has been shot in their shop. Nobody is trying very hard, so she decides to send word that she seeks justice. Gabrielle LaRue, the mambo from Hoodoo books, comes to her. Her godson, Devlin Daniels, would help her get the justice. They warn her there's going to be a price.
I thought it is too obvious who the killer was. I was wrong. I thought I knew how it would end. I was wrong there too. Cass doesn't just get justice. She gets much more.
Devlin Daniels appears in Black Heart Loa the first time. You get a bit more information about him and his past in this story. He was just interesting in Black Heart Loa. Here I loved him. And still didn't find out enough to be satisfied.
This story isn't connected to Kallie except for Gabrielle and Devlin. There is another book in Hoodoo series planned for 2015 (Black Moon Mojo). I can hardly wait to read more about this world, Hecatean Alliance and its enemies, voodoo priests, Kallie's loa and so on.
Caught Forever Between is an excellent short story that captures the magic of Adrian Phoenix' Louisiana Bayou. This is a perfect story to go along with her Hoodoo series!
The story opens with Cass, a tattoo apprentice that can see into the heart of people she meets, seeking revenge for the brutal attack of her friend and tattoo expert Alex. Cass is scared and horrified by what has happened and immediately thinks the culprit is her sister. To seek justice, Cass calls upon mambo Gabrielle LaRue. This part of the short story seems to mirror the constant warning in both of Phoenix' Hoodoo books, "An eye for an eye is never enough."
Her hands curled into fists. "Maybe so. But it'll even things out," she said, voice strained. "Blood for blood."
"Nothing ever evens out spilled blood, child," Gabrielle said, weariness edging her voice.
Gabrielle, whom we know from previous Hoodoo books, asks Cass to come to the bayou and meet her Godson. Cass meets the sexy and enigmatic Devlin Daniels at his home in the swamp. We first learned of Devlin in Phoenix' previous Hoodoo book, Black Heart Loa. Unfortunately for the reader, we didn't get much page time with Devlin. This is the first place we actually get to spend time with this character, who is intriguing on so many levels. We even learn Devlin's relationship with the rest of the Hoodoo world. I'm glad to report that Adrian Phoenix has confirmed that we will see more of Devlin in her next Hoodoo book.
He appeared ....taller than Cass' five-two by eight or nine inches, his body lean, muscular, and broad-shouldered. Tangled black hair fell just past his shoulders and swept over the left side of his face, almost hiding the left eye. He was bare-chested and barefoot, his black jeans torn and weathered almost grey.
Devlin agrees to help Cass seek justice for Alex's condition. However, Cass soon learns she made a mistake. Cass hurries to correct her mistake before time runs out.
I liked Cass in this short story, but there wasn't anything special about her. She was a troubled heroine with a shady past, and we do learn some secrets about her. Gabrielle is perfect in this book, almost like she walked right out of a conversation with Kallie Riviere (the main character in the Hoodoo series). Devlin is the big draw for me to this short story. He is mysterious, and I want to know so much more about him. I can only imagine how he's going to fit into the future Hoodoo books.
The world Phoenix creates is second to none. She excels in building her New Orleans, Louisiana bayou world full of mambos, magic and sexy loup-garou. She nails the flavor of the swamp with her brand of cajun-French dialogue. I cannot wait until Hoodoo #3 is released sometime within the next year. This is a fantastic installment to an already great series.
Caught forever between, the loup-garou and her, trapped between skin and fur, sun and moon, justice and vision. Maybe the walk along hell's road never truly ended.
Awesome story. I am already an Adrian Phoenix Hoodoo series fanatic (and Maker's Song, too!), and this was SUCH a tease - I WANT MORE! Not normally a short-story fan, this was the perfect pace and awesome fiction I have come to expect from this author. Though two recurring characters from Hoodoo are in this, it can be read as standalone for true. :)
This short story pulls me back into the world of Cass and the bayou adventures she experiences. Although it is a stand alone for any reader it's an exciting follow-up to the hinted at destiny between Cass and the loup garou Devlin. Love it. Hope the books about these characters keep coming.
Fabulous! Great characters! Story makes you feel for the Werewolf. I recommend Adrian Phoenix books to everyone! The ! The Makers Song series is a great read too!
Cass looks for a supernatural solution when she is unable to gain justice through conventional channels for the one who may have taken her lover from her forever - but Hoodoo justice demands a steep price.
Caught Forever Between is an excellent, if a bit creepy, stand-alone short set at the edge of the Bayou of Adrian's Hoodoo series world - though those who have read other books will recognize Hoodoo Mambo Gabrielle and her godson loup garou Devlin. The thing that made this story so good was that even though it was short Adrian still managed to do it all: give a real sense of who the characters were, and give a flavor of this magic filled world while building to a less than predictable climax before ending with the somewhat unsettling resolution - hence the touch of creepiness - all while making me excited about reading her next story. I am happy that I still have the second book Black Heart Loa to read just so that I can revisit this very interesting world on more time.
I loved it! It's a really well written short story (would we expect anything less from Adrian Phoenix?), but the problem I always have with shorts, is that they obviously end too soon! It's a self contained story with a beginning, middle and end, and can stand alone without having read the other 2 books in the hoodoo series. It was refreshing to read the vivid descriptions of people, places, and scents- I could almost feel the muggy hot weather and smell the swamp, and Devin Daniels (boy, I want more Devin, for sure! Can't wait for even more of that story to develop....). Will we see more of Cass and her Michalangelo in upcoming books?? I hope so!
Another brilliant bit of fiction from one of my favorite authors writing one of my favorite series ever. I love the Hoodoo world and even though Devlin Daniels is one scary man I so love him, too! The author assures me that we will be seeing more of him in books to come which just makes me the happiest of readers.
I think what draws me to this series, aside from the men with long hair, tattoos and sexy accents, is the sense of being in the book, seeing the trees trailing moss, feeling the muggy, heavy air, smelling the swamp and experiencing the magic that is the Hoodoo World. I can't say enough about this series, it's just one happy bit of deliciousness, as was this book.
I loved this short story set in the same area as Adrian Phoenix as her voodoo books series. This story sucks you in right away and even though it's short I felt for the characters before I even got a chapter in Adrian's writing really brings out the emotions of her characters and lets you roll around in them until you feel them too. This dark and creepy story of revenge is a great read while you wait for her next book to come out.
Darkly atmospheric, Ms. Phoenix gives the reader a heavy dose of cajun culture and spice, wrapped up in a short story full of urgency and horror, and Voodoo mystique. I loved it. I love everything Adrian writes. Too bad it was just a teaser. Now I am anxiously waiting for Black Moon Mojo to come out. It can't be published quick enough.
I can truly say that I've devoured these books again and again and I can't wait for more! One of the things I like about these books is that it brings the world of voodoo alive in a way one can only imagine. As it turned out, this isn't the only urban fantasy series that does just that but for me it was the first and therefore it will always be one of my favourites!
I wish the writing in the Hoodoo series books had been written like this. Finally, writing that is solid and not all over the place. This story was cute and was a nice tie in with Gabrielle LaRue and her godson, Devlin. Makes their appearance in the main series less of characters of convenience.
