Alan Moore is an English writer most famous for his influential work in comics, including the acclaimed graphic novels Watchmen, V for Vendetta and From Hell. He has also written a novel, Voice of the Fire, and performs "workings" (one-off performance art/spoken word pieces) with The Moon and Serpent Grand Egyptian Theatre of Marvels, some of which have been released on CD.

As a comics writer, Moore is notable for being one of the first writers to apply literary and formalist sensibilities to the mainstream of the medium. As well as including challenging subject matter and adult themes, he brings a wide range of influences to his work, from the literary–authors such as William S. Burroughs, Thomas Pynchon, Robert Anton Wilson and Iain Sinclair; New Wave science fiction writers such as Michael Moorcock; horror writers such as Clive Barker; to the cinematic–filmmakers such as Nicolas Roeg. Influences within comics include Will Eisner, Harvey Kurtzman, Jack Kirby and Bryan Talbot.

(Hodnotím všechny 4 sešity najednou - z nějakého důvodu to (dosud) na kindlu nevyšlo v jednom svazku.)

Neonomicon svým názvem jasně (a nápaditě) odkazuje ke kultovnímu Necronomiconu a tím vlastně říká vše, o co půjde - Lovecraftiánské mýty v novém, komiksovém hávu. Nebyl by to Alan Moore, aby ztvárnění nepojal po svém. A tak ve svém proslulém stylu, opět re-interpretuje žánr. Sice to nebude taková legendární pecka jako Watchmen - Strážci, ale pořád velmi dobrý.

Příběh sice začíná tam, kde skončil The Courtyard, ale zas až tolik společného tyto příběhy nemají.

V sexy (ups! 😊) podání Alana Moora to ale má něco do sebe. Už se těším na následující Providence.

It is really a shame that Alan Moore has pretty much walked away form comics. Neonomicon isn’t his strongest work; and this issue isn’t even the best of this miniseries (issues 2 & 3 were better), but even Moore’s “B-list” is pretty darn good. That’s something that is easy to lose track of while the guy is giving unusual interviews expressing his continued displeasure over Watchmen and the royalties Dave Gibbons has collected; or when he’s saying that he doesn’t think any current comic creators are very good. Personal oddities and hobo beards aside, the guy is a truly gifted writer.

Moore’s gifts hit you right in the face in this very understated issue. There is no awful, week long rape scene to distract you in this issue. It’s mostly just a postmortem on the events of the first three issues that features a lot of talking. From a lesser writer, this could be a really tedious issue, but under Moore’s pen, the words just flow like butter. It is almost a shame that Moore is so good at these sorts of issues, because lesser creators continually try to emulate him and they just come off like talentless chumps when they do.

That’s not to say that the issue is devoid of action. The star of this issue is the masterful building of tension as the FBI raids the cult with cuts back-and-forth between Agent Brears getting a partial debrief outside the cult headquarters and the FBI agents storming the facility, shooting it out with the remaining cultists and getting closer and closer to you-know-who. Moore always knows that we really want to be watching the shootout scenes, but he keeps pulling us away at just the key moment to build the tension. Bravo!

The concept that Moore is exploring here is great: What if Lovecraft’s works were not merely stories, but more of him chronicling real world events as he fell deeper into the cult in real life? That is really a trippy thought when you consider it! Moore posits the idea: what if it was really Lovecraft who was inspired by his “fans” and not the other way around? What if they “fans” have always been here and Lovecraft just told their stories? I know ‘they’ say there are no new ideas in fiction, but I really don’t think I’ve ever seen this story before.

The art is fine in this issue. The framing of scenes is masterful. Knowing how much detail regarding the art Moore puts into his scripts, it is unclear who should get credit for this, but the effect is very professional: It tells exactly the story that Moore wants to tell. And, from a pure line work standpoint, it is a perfectly fine and a very clear looking issue. I tend to like my line work a little more experimental, but that probably would have ruined this story.

Ooooh! Somehow, someway, Alan Moore found a way to cram in his understandable interest in nonlinear time. (You'll know it when you see it. Feels like a tribute to Vonnegut more than anything).

This was a very clean ending with an ominous conclusion. I had already originally skimmed through the book before reading from the beginning and got the impression from the Gallery in the back that this might end with the end of the world or something.

And in a way- yeah? But not really.
If who I think is in Brears is in Brears- then this was all probably worth it.
What a strange tale this was.
I can't knock it for anything. It's a well told story with some ducked up shit that ends in a fairly standard way. All while dealing with the complex legacy of an extremely flawed human who happened to have an amazing imagination.

I enjoyed the writing and the story of the series, Moore's enamour with the fantastical, occult, and the acceptance of Lovecraft's legacy are all enjoyable, and yet it missed Moore's usual depth and punch.

Boring

What a waste of a purchase! I was disappointed in this comic. Four issues for a tale full of blah, blah nonsensical crap. Take my advice avoid this one!

Consider this my thoughts on this whole series. I think Neonomicon makes me appreciate the Courtyard more; Moore is exploring the underlying themes of Lovecraft, the real ugly stuff that other homages stay away from. Peaks in the middle when it abruptly becomes very upsetting in ways I wasn't prepared for (arguably it goes too far, but I think in an effectively nasty register that feels dangerous in a way I admired), but the whole thing is strong.

Now I have to debate if I'm going to shell out a bunch of $$$ for Providence.

I really love the way, Alan Moore has touched on Lovecraftian themes. In Moore's lovecraftian world everything has an end. Brutal scenes, totally not for minors, racism, misogyny, a typical Alan Moore's story.

I didn't like the vibrant tones of the colors. I supposed that black and white, or desaturate colors would fit better. This is a dark horror story, not an Archie Comic.
