Twilight Temptations: Tales of Lust, Dark Desire, and Magic

Rate this book
The philosopher Hegel claimed that self-consciousness is desire. That which we covet reveals our true nature. Some lost souls wander the world with their heart’s desire anchored. By daylight, they repress their wanton hunger for fear of revealing their true natures. It is only in the darkness of the twilight hours that the mask slips and desire will have its way. Read thirteen tales written and collected by Jason Andrew of lust, dark desires, and magic from 2006 to 2010.

I received this book through Goodreads first-reads.

Regretfully, I did not finish this book.

Twilight Temptations is a book of collected short stories of Lust, Dark Desire, and Magic.... Or at least, it claims to be. When I entered to win this book, I was expecting dark erotic tales, and I hardly got that.

The first story deals with a food critic who works at a Seattle news paper. He hears about this amazing restaurant with no name and no menus, and sets off on a quest to find this magical place. First, I found the errors in the story hard to get passed, and thus did not enjoy the story.

The second story was a bit more promising, set in an old time Seattle brothel I figured I was going to get my erotic tale, but alas, it was about a magical deck of playing cards that killed people. I assume it was supposed to be a horror story, but the horror was as lacking as my interest in the story. Grammatical errors here too.

By the third story, I was sure I would get my erotica. The main character was a whorish man who has bagged just about every college girl in Seattle in his attempt to find his writing muse. When he meets Calliope and finally gets his night of passion, the scene is devoid of any erotic description. Hardly a lusty tale by any account. More grammatical errors.

The fourth story was surprisingly about a woman in Seattle who wants to live up to her naughty name, Jezebel, but also wants her love life to be as magical as it is in the movies. She's not content to settle for a "safe" guy, she wants excitement. After she blows a tire in a Seattle rain storm, she's saved by the man of her dreams. He is everything she ever wished for in a man, and constantly satisfies every sexy kink she has. And she appears to have all of them. Just, no. That's not erotic at all, that's disgusting. And once again, any "erotic" scene had no description. It was only describing what that kink was. Oh, more grammatical errors.

The only character in this book that I liked was Jezebel's pug Jo-Jo. I love pugs.

But after four disappointing stories, I could not make myself read on. I was frustrated with characters, grammatical errors, and I dreaded to read further.

However, the stories, while not being what I was looking for, did have some good qualities. There were lessons each character seemed to learn through their misfortunes, and I feel these might be some good campfire stories to tell. Though, one might want to improvise a few "love scenes".

These stories were not my cup of tea, but I don't doubt that they have an appropriate audience out there.

Thank you to Jason Andrew for my copy.

I read this book cover to cover the day that I got it. I loved every story in it and a few really stuck with me. A few stories would even rank in my top 10 short stories list. Recommended for anyone who's a fan of Horror or Dark Fantasy. Pick it up if you can.

I loved the book and Jason Andrew takes us on a wild ride with his stories of Lust, Dark Desire and Magic. Since I am from the Northwest I especially enjoyed the stories and will be looking at Seattle with new eyes from now on. Not for the faint of heart, but very entertaining.
