新條まゆ in Japanese Mayu Shinjo debuted in 1994 in Shogakukan's Shōjo Comic with "Anata no Iro ni Somaritai". She continued writing for Shogakukan until 2007, with her works appearing in both Shōjo Comic and their other magazine Cheese!. She left the company to go freelance citing a dispute over working conditions and abusive treatment by her editor.
So, I think I’m done with Mayu Shinjo. Just… done. I think?
I really, really want to like her series. She’s kind of like the smutty shojo author, the one to read, the one that everyone loves. But I just really don’t think I like her style.
I read up to the second volume of Demon Love Spell before giving up, and was reluctant to pick up this volume before relenting and getting it. And now I just don’t think I want any more of her. This volume was not nearly as bad as Demon Love Spell, and it was even kind of getting better at the end, so there is always the possibility I will pick up another volume, but I’m in no hurry to do so.
It’s just… the offensive material that Shinjo handles, almost in an offhand way, is ridiculous. And I hate it, and it makes me rage all over the place. (I mean, read the review for Demon Love Spell Volume 2, it really proves my point.)
This volume starts with Akira practically laughing while the woman who hurt Mizuki is being almost-raped. Thank god Mizuki comes in to stop it, and it actually stops, but afterward Akira gives a dumb reason about failing as a man and Mizuki forgives him. They practically ignore the fact that he organized for a woman to get raped, no matter what she did, and it’s never even mentioned again. Like that’s an acceptable thing to do. Like it’s an acceptable thing for a person to try to have done. Akira sure as hell doesn’t learn his lesson, that’s for damn sure.
There are some actual plots in this story, I guess. Mizuki has an older friend who loves her, Shinnosuke, who Akira wins against in a fight over Mizuki, where he pretty much cheats and flaunts, really, and everyone acts like Akira got hurt, when he didn’t even get hit once. And the whole thing is because they both feel possessive of Mizuki, without her having any say in the matter. Particularly when Shinnosuke first finds out and demands they break up, he tells Akira to do the breaking up, not even acknowledging Mizuki. Then he forces himself on Mizuki a little, gets her flustered and upset, and claims that in the future he’s going to steal her heart or whatever.
Then Akira’s friend has problems with his family, Akira gets sick and Mizuki takes care of him, and their schools have festivals and they each get possessive of the other.
Akira continues to not care what Mizuki wants. He’s constantly pushing himself on her, ignoring when she says no, being overly possessive and not wanting her to feel good about herself with anyone but him.
For instance, on their date he makes her dress up in girly clothes that look good on her and make her feel good, then selfishly demands that she change out of them because he doesn’t want anyone to see her that way. Which, I understand not wanting other people to see the way you do in that acceptably possessive way, but not when Mizuki was finally feeling good and like a girl, when she’s constantly bothered when other people think of her as a boy. Then again at the end, she feels good “flirting” with the girls at her school, dressing as a prince and winning competitions, she’s genuinely happy about these things, but Akira barges in and makes her dress like a princess and steals her spotlight.
There was another point in the volume where Mizuki invited him inside, and he expected them to have sex, and then guilted her when she said that she wanted to just hang out with him. Like actually getting to know the person you like, instead of only ever making out and having sex with them, was a bad thing. That just pissed me off.
I don’t like Akira very much. He’s possessive and selfish and demanding and never listens to what Mizuki actually wants. I don’t like Mizuki much either, because she’s always falling all over him, giving in, when she shouldn’t be.
I will admit there were a couple of things I did like about this volume, as it seemed like Mizuki was growing, and even taking control of a couple of their intimate encounters, and opening up to actually liking them, which was good. I don’t think it was really enough to make me like the volume, however.
I don’t know if I’m going to pick up another volume. At some point, maybe, or maybe one of her other series. But maybe not.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
In the first twenty pages of this volume: Akira (the male love interest) has ordered someone to rape a girl who attempted to rape Mizuki (the female protagonist) in the previous volume and is now standing in the room watching it happen. Mizuki barges into the room, almost does nothing because she thinks Akira looks sexy when he's angry, but decides to stop the rape after all. They leave the room. A brooding Akira says that he facilitated the rape in an attempt to protect Mizuki and he feels bad because he couldn't protect her. Mizuki thinks this is cute, and they kiss (with consent). Later, in bed, Akira kisses Mizuki while she sleeps (without consent), thinking: "Never forget that I am a wolf."
EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS IS BAD. AND THERE'S STILL 300 PAGES (AND TWO OMNIBUSES) TO GO.
EDIT: It doesn't get better. Akira is so emotionally manipulative. He wants to have sex with Mizuki and he doesn't want to listen when she tells him no repeatedly; only when he's on top of her in her bed and she starts crying does he stop. How can anyone like this walking red flag?? Dump his ass!!!!
I didn't have this full description when I started to read it, I thought it was a band and that they were guys and no one knew Mizuki was a girl, I didn't realise it was a whole girlband and that they were all dressing like boys. Though I knew there was an attraction to boys looking like girls (in all boys schools), I didnt realise there was one for girls looking like boys in all girl schools too. So basically this is a manga full of 'traps' as someone I know likes to call them. Girls looking like boys and boys looking like girls. I would just like to point out that the girls are seen as 'pretty boys', for example, when dressed as girls they didn't seem to be men in dresses, but pretty women. I did enjoy, that while she was the tall and 'manly' one, she fulfilled the stereotypical female role and he fulfilled the stereotypical male role, looking after her while she cried all over the place. It was just the right side of odd. While it was amusing watching them attend each others schools (located next to each other) in the other schools uniform etc, there didn't seem to be much point to it, except that Mizuki worried she was too manly and Akira wondered if his willingness to dress as a girl to be near her would work against him. There was the typical "I want to do dirty perverted things with you because I am a man" manga talk and "nooooo I'm not ready! I cant tell you that I love you" as well as the long list of interruptions that always come at the wrong moment. While there is a 'sequel' (I believe the author switched publishers) I wont be continuing to read this. I'm not sure where it's going and I've had enough. Where I've got up to is an alright stopping point.
I really enjoyed this volume. Akira and Mizuki get closer to each other, but they haven't gone all the way, yet. Akira really wants to, but I think that after he and Mizuki talk about it, he realizes it can't be rushed. He can get pretty sexy when he's horny, though. Considering he looks like a middle school girl, it never fails to surprise me when I see that look on his face that says he's ready to get it on...
There are plenty of cross-dressing hijinks in this volume, but also moments where Akira makes sure that Mizuki realizes that people can see her as a girl and that she looks beautiful when she's all dolled up. There's some trouble from one of Mizuki's childhood friends as well. He's been in love with Mizuki for years and doesn't think Akira is man enough for her. Akira really steps up, though and despite almost falling prey to the doubts Shinnosuke put into her head, Mizuki realizes that it's Akira that truly makes her feel like a girl and makes her happy.
I'm really liking this series. It's not mind-blowing, but I think it's fucking fun.
So if you can't tell I spent most of last night reading manga and hanging out with my new cats (yay cats!)
This manga keeps me guessing, it get's a little rapey at times, but then turns around all sweet as pie and not pushy. The characters and the art keeps me coming back though, both main characters have a good amount of layering, and issues, so the love story keeps changing, makes it interesting. I'll probably read the next one at some point, but I need to catch up on a few series that I haven't read in a while like Ouran Host Club.
I picked up this volume because I wanted to read the ending of the "attempted rape and revenge" arc from the first volume. This title looks shojo but reads josei, with more adult themes than I'm used to in something so cute-looking, outside of yaoi. I don't find any of the characters to be particularly likeable, so I wouldn't read further by choice.
After picking up the first book on a whim, I just had to continue reading. This book is captivating and contains some very cute and dark characters. Although I am not a fan of romance, this series is one of the best as the romance is comedic and dark at the same time. I just couldn't resist continuing the series and look forward to reading all that I can.
This volume was full of a lot of headdesky idiocy (OMG my boyfriend evaded a question I asked, everything he ever told me must be a lie!), but did have some good parts, so I'm still looking forward to more of this.
I only read this volume because I'd borrowed the first 2 volumes through ILL and felt I should maybe give it a chance. It's better than the first volume in that there's no attempted rape. But now boys are fighting over her and blah. Will not be borrowing or reading any more of this series.
