If you can get through the arrogant assumptions made by this author, this book is a good read for Christian women who are uncertain of their role in the church and family. Few sermons are based on the women of the Bible, even though more than 400 of them are profiled in this book.
Usually we are introduced to women who were gentle, self-sacrificing, obedient and willing to hide their wit and intelligence from public view. Still, there are some great leaders, strong and vibrant women who were not afraid to take the helm of kingdoms. Women who were wise, resourceful and strong...and there were those wicked, wicked ladies who would have fit right in with Desperate housewives and everything in between.
I gave it three stars because too many Christian women of today cannot identify with the 'pre-packaged' versions of Bible women...but after getting a peek at these women, they will confidently take their place wherever God places them.
That's the best I could do because this author is insufferable in his suppositions and tainted with trying to blame the women for a man's mistakes without Bibical reference to support it.
I read this book as a starting place for studying all the women of the Bible, and it was helpful for that. It describes all the named, unnamed, and symbolical women in the Bible. But the actual content was questionable at times. The author had interesting takes on some things that I don’t agree with and was not taught in Bible college. He’s also very traditional when it comes to the roles of women in the family and even in the church (like that women need to know how to sow and can only teach other women 😬). He also warns against over-spiritualizing things but then does so often himself. There were too many women who the Bible says quite literally nothing about other than they were someone’s mother that the author somehow wrote whole paragraphs on. So I took everything with a grain of salt. The book was helpful for the purpose for which I read it - to have a list of every woman and decide who I should study in depth. But needless to say I will be searching for additional perspectives on the women I do further study on.
This book was a gift to me from one of the women in my bible study class. It is a fabulous reference book on all the women of the Bible (both named and unnamed). Since it was originally published several decades ago, it should be acknowledged that it contains some assumptions and opinions by the author that are outdated. However, as another reviewer attests, I also don't believe in "throwing out the baby with the bathwater."
In my opinion, this book is unsurpassed by any other contemporary women-of-the-bible books as to the completeness of the individual accounts. The detailed references, complete index, and other valuable information contained in this book have made it one of my go-to books on a regular basis.
I also hope to read some of the other books in a series written by Dr. Herbert Lockyer.
2.5 It was written/published in 1967 and reads as such. If you're looking for a high-quality, in depth look at scriptural womanhood, you won't find it here, but it does have a very organized list of woman in the Bible, who they were, and where to find them. It's best used for that, and not the introductory chapters! :)
An astonishingly thorough and pleasant read. It is an obvious treasure for girls and women, but a surprisingly beneficial book for men and boys to read to gain insight into women. An absolute must for Gospel ministers.
Stopped reading this book as the author takes liberty in accessing the women. Yes there are some good biblical facts, but his male arrogance is so off putting. I do not recommend this book. Didn’t think it matter that a man wrote this, but in this case it does.
This review was featured at MostlySensible.com Indispensable reference book! I pull this out often as I prepare for Ladies' Bible Studies or writing articles. It gives me a good starting place as I look for the historical and biographical context of a passage. All known references to women are cited whether she is named or not. Scripture references are first noted plus each woman's family connections, the meaning of her name if known, and some commentary from Lockyer. I will never get rid of this book.
It's a great indexed reference of all the named and unnamed women in the Bible even the obscure ones. Each has an explantion of where and how they fit in the bible.
There's the meaning of each name, plus there's suggestions for bible studies, Mother's day messages and aids in womens meeting.
I recently used it to find a biblical name for each letter of the bible.
I have just finished one book and will start reading about the women in the Bible, and so far I have looked up names so I know this will be a good reference book as well as cascual reading to learn more about the women.
This is a good reference book especially when I am in conversation with female church members. They often speak of women from the bible, the things they have done, whether good or bad, their characteristics, etc. I now have some clue as to who and what they are referring about.
