Excellent. Transformative. This is required reading for most but especially for the reader of any non-violent faith. . . "Never must the church tire of reminding men that they have a moral responsibility to be intelligent." This book is a collection of Dr. King's sermons, purposefully ordered and arranged to lead the reader through the need for critical thought and non-conformity, a call to action through love, and discussions on things, like fear, that get in the way. Undoubtedly a Christian text but respect, reverence, and lessons to be learned from the teachings of many different faiths and philosophies are woven throughout - Ghandi, Thich Naht Hahn (whom Dr. Kind nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize), Plato, Socrates, Freud, Nietzsche, Kierkegaard and many others. Would recommend for all readers looking to learn a new perspective from literature that is well researched, well articulated and an absolute master class. Has earned a solid spot on my lifetime favorites list.
King’s speaking style is beautiful and brilliant, and he appeals to transcendent values! Obviously one of the most useful sets of sermons out there. I’m a little unsure on the actionable aspects of his ethics and his arguments on communism and his “letter from paul to america” which is why this isn’t five stars.
