Dead Over Heels by Mary Janice Davidson is utterly adorable. This anthology of three novella's is much better than some of Miss Davidson's previous work. I love the way she put paranormals about three different species in this book. It was laugh out loud funny.

The first novella is called "Undead and Wed: A Honeymoon Story". Of course it is about our lovely Queen Betsy and King Sinclair. I found this to be the best Betsy story yet. Not as much whining and more storyline, the usual laugh out loud dialogue and shoe fetish, overly sexual without the tension of previous stories make this just a fun, fluffy read.

The second novella is called "Survivors" and deals with the new found merfolk. This wasn't as action packed but was quite cute. I love the simple sarcastic dialogue between the human and mermaid, the one track mind of the male species when it comes to naked women and the females perception of how dumb and self centered some men can be. Knowing this is all in fun makes it a quite enjoyable story that you can whip through in an hour.

The third novella is called "Speed Dating, Werewolf Style" and of course deals with our were friends. Cain is a she were coming up on her thirtieth birthday and looking around at all her pack mates realizing that she is the only one not mated yet. So off we go on a wild ride of blind dates, interviewing possible mates and wanting to kill her best friend so to speak over his inaccurate slip of the tongue description of her. I love this one. Cain does not hold back on her opinions or use of vulgar language which I find makes her character more appealing. It's a light, fluffy, giggly read that you can zip through in no time.

I hope to see the author come out with more stories like these in the future. I love the Betsy books but the more recent ones have had just a wee bit more whining that previous ones and it does tend to get on the nerves after awhile. The mermaid and were stories are good and it's nice to jump to stories like these that are so light, fluffy, air headed and quick for a change of pace.

This book contains two novellas, and I only read Undead and Unwed: A Honeymoon Story. The other novella is part of a series that I haven't read yet, but if/when I do, I will be sure to update this to include it.

Absolutely loved the novella. Betsy and Sinclair go to NYC for their honeymoon and, of course, run into more trouble. Never just a calm vacation for the king and queen of the vampires.

Trigger Warning: Child death/murder (no gruesome details)

Read Betsy and Sinclair’s honeymoon tale. Pretty good. Read Cain’s (Wyndham Werewolf) tale, most excellent.

This is a book of three short stories. Each story deals with one of the author's three series (Undead, The Wyndham Werewolves, and Fred the Mermaid).

The first story (Undead and Wed) is about the honeymoon of Sinclair (The Undead King) and Elizabeth (THE Queen). It was pretty good and well written. The sex was a little bit too much (for me) but even parts of that were hilarious. The fun begins when their honeymoon is crashed by Elizabeth's friend, Jessica and her boyfriend, Nick (who used to be Elizabeth's friend). The plot was pretty good and (for once) I couldn't figure out who the real "bad guys" were. :)

The second story (Survivors) takes place in the Fred, the Mermaid series. This story needed some work. A human man is adrift in a rowboat in the middle of the ocean. Mermaid comes around and is intrigued. BUT instead of taking the man and his boat to land, this mermaid just keeps talking to him and trying to get him to drink fish fluids and eat raw fish. This goes on for at least 4 days before she gets the bright idea that he's dehydrated, may have heat stroke, and is starving. THEN she finally tows him to a deserted island. Of course, a romance occurs with all the necessary incidents. :)
Unfortunately, this story didn't measure up to the other two because I kept wondering "why doesn't she just tow the boat to an island or land? I mean she killed a hammerhead shark by herself, towing the craft somewhere shouldn't be a problem right?

The third story (Speed Dating Werewolf Style) takes place in the Wyndham Werewolf series. It was pretty predictable and it's not hard to guess who the "true love" really is but because the writing is enjoyable and the dialogue witty, that part is easy to overlook.

I figure in a book of short stories 2 out 3 ain't bad. So I would recommend this book to anyone who likes the supernatural served up with a dose of humor and good characters. An added plus is that you don't have to read any of the other books in any of the series.

MJD is a master of snarky humour. I really like her werewolf and vamp stories. The three in here I didn't like as much as the ones in the other anthology - Dead and Loving it - but they were still enjoyable reads with lots of laugh out loud lines.

I got this three-story collection from the library to bridge the gap between Queen Betsy books #6 and #7. That was the first story, but I read the other two because why not, it's only two.

The Betsy & Sinclair honeymoon story was fine. She's super excited to go to NYC for the first time and he's just glad the wedding nonsense is done. And sex, he likes the sex (they both do). But Jessica & Nick interrupt their trip with the FLIMSIEST excuse known to rom com lit. 3 of the 4 people involved live together. There would be COUNTLESS opportunities to resolve bad blood without crashing a honeymoon! I would've enjoyed a straight Betsy & Sinclair, vampires-only story for once. The villain is interesting, but mostly for her impact on Betsy's conscience.

The second story is in the Fred the Mermaid universe. I haven't read these books, or if I did, I don't remember it (pre-Goodreads). This story deals with a survivalist tv show host that gets stranded at sea--b/c he doesn't actually know how to survive in the wild. He's rescued by a silver-haired mermaid with little grasp on humor. Romance ensues, lots of fish guts, too.

The third and final story takes us back to the werewolves. Honestly, this was the best story of the three, Queen Betsy and all. It's a friends-to-lovers tale with bad dating mixed in.

I did like that each story was a different creature and set in a different book series. That kept it fresh. Definitely not a collection worth buying new. I've yet to read the next Queen Betsy book, but I have a feeling the short story won't have much impact.

This book contains three novels: one from the Queen Betsy series, where Betsy and Eric enjoy their honeymoon in NYC, one from the Fred the Mermaid series, which I skipped because I haven't read that series yet, and one from the Cape Cod Werewolves series, where a woman decides to go from militant single to ready to mate overnight.

The Betsy story was light even by Betsy standards, but was otherwise a harmless addition to the verse.

The Werewolf story was so offensive I had to dock at least two full stars. Cain finds out that but we're supposed to root for him because he's the man and knows best? Cain has a right to feel angry, and MJD making her look like an ungrateful shrew is gaslighting, abusive, and everything that's wrong with toxic relationships. This is not an example to be emulating.

The story is about Betsy and Sinclair's honeymoon in New York. They travel on a Private Jet and then a limousine, courtesy to her best friend. However, Jessica surprised them by showing up in the hotel with her boyfriend, Nick, who loathed them both. Jessica hopes to fix the relationship whilst there, but it's complicated when dead bodies show up.

This short story was entertaining yet sad. I understand both parties' feeling and Betsy's conflict when forced to kill the child vampire. I just wished that the ending was different tho. Nevertheless, Betsy being Betsy, it was hilarious, and I had fun reading it.

P/s: I only read A Honeymoon story to avoid reading any spoiler if I decided to read the Wyndham Werewolf series in the future.

The three stories in this anthology each involve different types of paranormal characters that readers who've read Davidson's various paranormal series will recognize. Overall, this is a humorous paranormal romance anthology involving vampires, werewolves, and mermaids.

"Undead and Wed: A Honeymoon Story":

Betsy and Sinclair are now married, and all Betsy wants to do is have an enjoyable honeymoon in New York, having sex with her new husband and shoe shopping. However, her friend Jessica and Jessica's boyfriend Nick unexpectedly tag along. Jessica's excuse for this is that she hopes the experience will make Nick get along with Betsy better - he hates and fears her and Sinclair for messing with his memory after Betsy inadvertently made him her willing slave. Betsy still feels guilty about what she did to Nick, so she agrees to let him and Jessica stick around.

Unfortunately, the hotel everyone is staying at is staffed mainly by vampires, not something Nick is glad to hear. When someone starts killing children near the hotel, Nick is convinced that one of the vampires at the hotel, maybe even Betsy or Sinclair, is the killer. Sinclair isn't happy with Nick, but he agrees that the killings must stop, so everyone tries to find the killer, only to discover the hotel's dark secret.

Davidson's explanation for Nick and Jessica's presence in this story wasn't terribly convincing, in my opinion. Nick has a perfectly good reason to fear Betsy, Sinclair, and other vampires - I don't see how a little exposure to them while they're on their best behavior is supposed to make him forget what they can do when they want or need to. I also don't see why Jessica had to arrange for this during Betsy's honeymoon - you'd think there'd be other times when she could trick everyone into being together, maybe during a vacation later on. Davidson tries to make it seem as though the events of this story might have initiated some sort of change in Nick's feelings for Betsy, maybe made him hate and fear her less, but I've already read the most recent book in the series, and he's so venomous towards her that this story might as well not have happened.

"Survivors":

Con is the star of a survival show. The latest episode of his show is supposed to be about survival techniques out in the ocean, but the boat he's on ends up getting separated from the filming crew and all the food. Although he's supposed to be a survival expert, he's not doing too well on his own until he's approached by silver mermaid who offers to help him. She does her best to feed him, keep him hydrated, and tow him to land. While they're on land, she changes her tail into a pair of legs and continues to keep him fed. The two of them soon have sex, and it isn't long before Con starts wondering if he really wants to be rescued. Once he's found, he'll have to go back to doing his show, and mermaids can't be far from water for long.

I might get made fun of for saying this, but I actually enjoyed this story. Con came across as a bit of a likable idiot - I mean, come on, a survival expert who refuses to do things he knows will save his life and doesn't make sure to be properly equipped for ocean survival? The mermaid, Reanesta, pretty much stole the show, and I'm so glad that Davidson alternated chapters written from Con's point of view with chapters written from Reanesta's point of view.

Because of her coloring (which she calls a noncolor), Reanesta is convinced that she's ugly, so she's sure that Con wouldn't find her attractive or want to sleep with her. Those who find "woman who thinks she's ugly finds guy who thinks she's hot" stories to be appealing will probably enjoy that aspect of this story. I particularly found Reanesta's non-humanness appealing. Since she hadn't ever interacted with humans before, she didn't really grasp why Con would be uncomfortable with her biting the heads off fish, and she had no problems with nudity. She also didn't have a great grasp of humor - at one point, she teases Con by calling him her pet, because she has to care for him and he's helpless without her. She doesn't mean what she's saying, but he doesn't know that (actually, I wasn't even sure she was kidding, at first).

"Speed Dating, Werewolf Style: Or, Ow, I Think You Broke the Bone":

Cain is a competitive werewolf who's just realized that she's almost the last of her friends from childhood not to be married. She determined to fix that, but she's only got 22 days. She enlists the help of her best friend Saul, who's her only remaining single friend and who doesn't seem to mind that status. Saul sets up a speed dating event for her, but none of the werewolves he's found for her are suitable. When she goes on a blind date with a werewolf who's heard she's looking for a mate, she almost gets raped and is saved by Saul. The experience scares Cain a bit, but it scares Saul, too, and he starts making it even harder for her to find a mate. The truth is, Saul has never married because he's loved Cain for years, even if she's never noticed.

If I hadn't known who this story was by, I might not have figured out that Saul loved Cain and was sabotaging her attempts at finding a mate as quickly as I did. As it was, I figured it out almost immediately, which made Cain seem like an even bigger and blinder idiot. Overall, though, I enjoyed this story. I'm a big fan of "the guy who's right for her is right under her nose" stories.

3 short stories worth A Live Read... ;)

I chose to check this book out through my library's online checkout program as my short stories selection in this year's summer reading program. I did not know of this author or her books but after reading this one I do plan on "checking out" more of her work, whether through the library or kindle purchases. Well worth it for me. I enjoyed the topic choices as well as how the stories flowed. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes quick reads about Vampires, Mermaids, and Werewolves who are witty, sometimes stubborn but very loveable even as The Undead can be.

This is a quick easy read, which is great for road trips or vacations.

The book contains 3 novellas that are related to other books written by the author, but they do stand alone for the most part. There may be some language used that may offend some people, so reader beware.

Enjoyed each of the 3 novellas. Reading this as part of the Undead series so I was most interested in A Honeymoon Story since the main thread of books didn’t cover it all but eluded to there being issues.

Trying to get caught up on the Undead series and realized I had missed this anthology that contains Betsy and Sinclair's honeymoon story. It should go without saying that honeymoons should only be shared with the bride and groom but Betsy doesn't have that much luck. Jessica and Detective Nick decide it is imperative that they accompany the newly married couple. Almost immediately, vampire-murdered children show up dead in the streets. Nick wants to accuse Betsy and Sinclair but even he has to admit they have alibis. Between tracking a killer and shoe shopping with Betsy's new Amex Black card, it is a honeymoon that no one will ever forget.

The second story is a Fred-the-Mermaid story except she isn't in it. Instead we have a television survivalist who has all the survivalist instincts of a banana who is stranded in the middle of the ocean and happens to meet a mermaid. It's a cute story but I think the "survivalist" would have gotten himself killed during the taping of the first season of show.

The final story was a Wyndham Werewolf story. In this case one of Michael's childhood pack friends is annoyed that she is one of the last to be married when they had made a pact about not marrying before 30. So she asks her best buddy so set her up. She never knew there were so many dweeby, pushy, slothful, rude werewolves out there until she discovers his real plan.

The Wyndham story is the best but none of the stories are particularly memorable. Like spun sugar they melt in your mouth and then are barely memories.

Undead and Wed – A Honeymoon Story
Sinclair, king of the vampires and his irreverent wife Elizabeth (The One). Her best friend Jessica and her detective boyfriend Nick (who hates and distrusts vampires). Though Sinclair said they were married when the first made love, she finally got her ceremony… and now her honeymoon.. in New York – in a vampire hotel… and with Jessica and Nick honing in. Nick is eager to catch them in sucking someone dry… but they end up working together to stop a old, teen vampire resident of the hotel who is killing children… Nick seems to be coming on board.

Funny snippets – in the midst of passion, she pushes her foot through the wall, leaving her shoe embedded in the wall. Sinclair sends Nick to accompany Elizabeth & Jessica on an errand – 3 hours in a shoe store.

Survivors
Con Conlinson – host of a reality survival show – where he tells, but does not do. And he gets separated from the master boat… he’s floating around in a dingyish boat… and mermaid Reanesta. She can move from tail to legs. She is innocent of human ways… She forces survival on him (fish blood, raw fish bits) and finally tows him to an island. The island is idyllic – for water, cooked fish, coconuts, and making love. He gets rescued (via communication with another mermaid who gets the message out)… they separate… and after a week of missing her, he starts to make pleas on the air that he loves her, he wants to see her, he wants a life with her… ahhhh

Speed Dating, Werewolf Style
Cain and Saul… Cain stays away from humans, Cain is competitive, Cain’s best friend is Saul.. And she decides she needs a mate – all of their friends are married & having pups… and she wants to do it before she’s 30 – 22 days forward… and she enlists Saul to help… She tries speed dating (all creeps), she tries a few blind dates (failures) – all with men Saul has selected. The 2nd blind date is going well, until they get back and he makes an aggressive pass at her – and Saul rescues her… and then that night she overhears his conversation with a friend – and realizes he set her up with guys she would not like… and when confronted, he tells her he loves her, he’s loved her since kindergarden… she takes off for a few days, not able to process it… finally goes to a bar, meets his friend who tells her to go see him – he loves her, she loves him… she goes, he’s pouting – she kisses him… and the rest is history…
