Spinster schoolteacher Ruth Blackburn has accepted her fate. She's not meant for love, especially not with ill-mannered—though excruciatingly handsome—Garth Mackenzie, the widowed father of one of her students. She'll just have to ignore the fact that he makes her skin heat.
Garth Mackenzie is used to loss. The Civil War cost him his best friend and his ability to sleep through the night, and illness stole his wife and son. To avoid the pain of losing his daughter, he keeps her at arm's length, much to her teacher's dismay. Ruth Blackburn is independent and opinionated—just what Garth doesn't need. But her vibrant beauty and energy awaken feelings in him he thought long dead.
Can he let go of his past and open up to new lessons of the heart?
#1 New York Times, #1 USA Today, and #1 Wall Street Journal bestselling author Helen Hardt's passion for the written word began with the books her mother read to her at bedtime. She wrote her first story at age six and hasn’t stopped since. In addition to being an award winning author of contemporary and historical romance and erotica, she’s a mother, an attorney, a black belt in Taekwondo, a grammar geek, an appreciator of fine red wine, and a lover of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. She writes from her home in Colorado, where she lives with her family.
So far this is my favorite book in this series! You fall in love with Ruth, you love her spirit, her heart, and everything she represents. She is a school teacher who you can see loves her students and particular one student pulls at her heart, Mary Alice. Her father Garth is just the opposite, he is loving but he is closed off and in ways cold towards people after suffering many tragic losses including his wife and son, and his best friend when fighting in the war. He keeps his guard up but you can see slowly as time goes on despite being up upset with Ruth's help in the beginning that he starts to fall for her. You see the confusion as he gets confused when he sees Ruth with the doc and wonders why it bothers him. They are in ways like oil and water but they are so amazing together. So many things happen and really had me sitting here wanting to know what was going to happen especially because Mary Alice was having fainting spells and you could see how much Ruth loves Mary Alice and you have all these hopes and dreams for both Ruth & Garth and even for sweet Mary Alice. Ruth takes such great care of Mary Alice when needed and you see the love just pouring out of her. I highly recommend this book and no you do not have to read the books in order, they are their own stories and can be read out of order but it helps to read in order because Naomi is mentioned in the beginning so if you have not read The Outlaws Angel you might not know who she is. Great book!
Ruth, a spinster school teacher, has a confrontation with one of her students, Mary Alice's, father, Garth. Sparks fly immediately between the two. Ruth has been asked to be courted by another man, but her heart isn't in it. She has fallen for Garth, but he doesn't return her feelings. She feels she is destined to be a spinster an unwed school teacher. Mary Alice, needs a female impression around. Ruth wants to be there for her. I've never been drawn to western type books before, but I'm a fan of Helen Hardt, so I gave it a try, and fell in love. Highly recommend reading the Daughters of the Prairie books.
Uhh, Garth is sooo handsome man, he has seen and lived trough a lot. Ruth is strong and inteligent woman, they compliment each other so well, enjoyed that little enemys to lovers moment❤️ And for people who love spice in books, do not wory there is plenty😏
Overall nice story, easy read, i read it in an hour, enjoy!
The horrors of war can devastate any soldier. At least garth found Ruth. The horrors of death and loss during the 1800’s can be tragic love is so important.the loss to Mary Alice was devastating and could have ended her childhood.
I truly am enjoying this little series. The story of Garth and Truth is sincere and honest... He has lost all faith and trust. His ability to have or show love Is locked away until Ruth opens his heart and mind. Great little read.
I loved this book so much! Garth is such a strong character and I loved reading his story. Ruth is an amazing character with so much love to give. Their story brought warmth to my heart!
It very odd for Ruth Blackburn spinster school teacher. Convinced she'd never be courted finding herself court by one man she felt nothing but friendship for. On the other hand Garth Mackenzie has her ready to swoon like his twelve year old daughter. Ruth loves them both and marries on impulse. She's found her true love and he's not about to let her go.
