The Long War Against God: The History and Impact of the Creation/Evolution Conflict

Rate this book
In this compelling defense of the Bible, Dr. Henry Morris presents the theory of evolution as one of Satan's most devastating attacks against the Church. The Long War Against God reveals the error of evolution and its aim to deny God, discredit His supernatural creation, and His sovereignty. Has Satan successfully led most Christians to give more credibility to the institution of science than the Bible? Today many Christians regard evolution as nothing more than God's method of creation. In this Christian apologetic resource, Morris boldly challenges this anti-biblical and even anti-theistic philosophy; an imagination or high thing exalting itself against the true knowledge of God (2 Corinthians 10:5). Within The Long War Against God , Morris exposes evolution's atheistic trail of destruction in movements such as Communism, Nazism, racism, and moral relativism. He explores evolutionary thinking as a belief system seeking to ultimately eliminate God. See for yourself how it dominates modern thought in every field. Realize how it led to lethally ominous political issues and social disintegrations such as abortion, infanticide, and euthanasia. Christian history is rife with casualties in the war on God as the Creator of this world. A professional scientist and theologian, Morris successfully answers the "Who" and the "Why" behind the ongoing Creation vs. Evolution conflict. His insightful perspective and compelling research offers a strong defense for the inerrancy of Scripture. Christian families, churches and schools use The Long War Against God to tear down societal strongholds and fortify their faith in the infallible Word of God. This classic resource not only documents Christian history, it is sure to equip believers who will courageously create history for future believing generations.

"The Long War Against God" by Dr. Henry Morris is a “reference book” meant to be used to look up certain subjects and names of people for reference, instead of being read all the way through as I have. It's a classic for Creationists, very academic. It has two indexes, one for names of important people involved in evolution/creationism and one for subject matter and topics. It is essential for Creationists and Creationist Scientists everywhere, truly a classic and highly recommended for its in-depth research and analytical conclusion.

Speed reading is awesome with normal stuff. But when sentences are longer and filled with uncommon words like eugenics, natural selection, survival of the fittest, the natural chain of being...it tends to slow the mind down if that mind has not been previously conditioned by such vernacular.

The very interesting fact toward the end is how Dr. Morris ties in the Zodiac and astrology with the Tower of Babel (which they found). He speaks of a mass exodus of people that occurred around the time the languages of humankind were altered, and how even linguists and ethnologists tend to refer to these languages as Semitic, Japhetic, and Hamitic. These languages are named after Noah's sons: Shem, Ham and Japeth.

Also, in addition to that little nugget most people don't realize that experts believe all the languages of the entire world came from one source; i.e., meaning one individual language. The standard reference book "The Story of Language" (New York: Lippincott, 1965, p. 22 by Mario Pei) says:

"Leibnitz, at the dawn of the eighteenth century, first advanced the theory that all languages come not from a historically recorded source but from a proto speech. In some respects, he was a precursor of the Italian twentieth century linguist Trombetti, who boldly asserted that the Biblical account of the Tower of Babel is at least figuratively true, and that all languages have a common origin."

The deep structure or semantic component of all languages is essentially the same. According to Dr. Stent in "Limits to the Scientific Understanding of Man" (Gunther S. Stent, "Science" 187, March 21, 1975) he writes:

"Hence, it is merely the phonological component that has become greatly differentiated during the course of human history, or at least since the construction of the Tower of Babel. The semantic component has remained invariant and is, therefore, the 'universal' aspect of the universal grammar, which all natural languages embody. And this presumed constancy through time of the universal grammar, which all natural languages embody. And this presumed constancy through time of the universal grammar cannot be attributable to any cause other than an innate, hereditary aspect of the mind."

Most evolutionists espouse the theory that primitive people have primitive languages, naturally, because they have not in any way, shape or form advanced (or “evolved”) in the way modern civilizations have of the greater First World Countries. However, according to an article in the periodical “Science” we have conflicting scientific evidence:

“The so-called primitive languages can throw no light on language origins, since most of them are actually more complicated in grammar than the tongues spoken by civilized peoples.” Ralph Linton, “The Tree of Culture” (New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1955), p. 9. Dr. Linton was one of the nation’s outstanding cultural anthropologists.

When one looks analytically at subject topics, “observable” and “scientific” evidence supports the first eleven-chapters of the Book of Genesis more so than Evolution itself. How evolution took root in the world is largely political (French Revolution) but would take too long to go into this book review. Suffice it to say that the major proponents of Evolution are Charles Darwin (his only degree was in divination, a failed divination student), Charles Lyell (the father of historical geology but a mere lawyer), James Hutton (the progenitor of Charles Lyell and an agriculturalist), and Robert Chambers (a journalist who wrote the book “Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation” which dealt with Natural Selection BEFORE Darwin supposedly ‘created’ it) were not adequately educated to form their theories. In the court of law, when calling on experts of medicine, the legal system only uses trained medical experts such as doctors, surgeons, etc. But, if calling upon trained experts in “scientific” evolution, they would have chosen these under-educated ‘characters’. Darwin and his cohorts rose to the occasion simply because they were ‘brave’ enough to form these theories publicly.

The book “The Long War Against God” has been very influential on me, as it quotes both Evolutionary scientists and scientists leaning toward Creationism. It makes the reader acclimated to apologetics somewhat, but more to the idea that pantheism, polytheism and atheism has been pushed around since the Babylonian Empire and the Tower of Babel.

Evolution is not based on good science. It is not based upon that which is testable, repeatable, verifiable.

This book goes to the heart of the matter.
It deals with this is simply part of the long war against God. And that it is a false teaching and world view that can be traced back thousands of years.
See the fact that regarding the attacks on the truth, indeed there is nothing new under the sun.

If you question evolution this is the book you have been waiting for.
This is not an argument against evolution it is the history and devastation that it has left it its wake. The proof that evolution is not science but a religion (Pantheism - God is everything and everything is God, or "Go hug a tree today"), is written on the pages of this book.

As with most of Morris' books, they were written awhile back. And so a lot of the information that Morris presents to us is outdated, incorrect, or irrelevant. To be sure, there is some truths scattered throughout the book despite there being some pretty dogmatic stances written out. For instance, Morris shines on areas of naturalism and Darwinism. You will find no qualms from me in that regard. But what Morris did is similar to what Ken Ham does, namely drawing lines in the sand where Scripture does not. Regardless if Morris is shown to be right one day in all of this, such actions should not be taken lightly. Additionally, Morris is quick to cut off anyone who doesn't hold to his position of YEC, and not only that but also those who don't hold to his version of YEC. YEC is not monolithic and to assume it is may find yourself on the other end of Morris 'firing squad.

Audible.com 10 hours 32 min. Narrated by Bob Sauer

Dr. Morrison presents facts evolution is not a science but a religion based on the works of noteable atheists. The record of God's creation and the flood as recorded in Genesis are true and and essential to our belief of the God of design, an earth and man created in six 24 hour days "and it was very good" and God rested on the seventh day. The first man Adam and his wife Eve disobeyed God's one rule, and thus sin entered the world. Jesus Christ the only begotten Son of God came into the world to redeem man God's creation. The Christian church must hold fast and deny any part of evolution, or else deny the existence of a divine omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient God. Creation: chance or design?

This book was awesome! It covered and connected my three favorite topics to learn about… Darwinism/evolution, uniformatarianism, and the new age/occultism (obviously I am opposed to all three of those things). The author makes the case that Darwinism/evolution was an idea birthed by Satan in opposition to creationism (as the Bible teaches). I’d never heard anyone make the connection before, but this author did it excellently! This is one of my new favorite books.

I agree with most of what he says, but not everything. For example, he goes on and on how important it is to take the Bible literally and recognize that God created the Earth in six days and rested on the SABBATH, the seventh day. He also mentions the pagan corruption of the Catholic church via Roman and Greek pagan beliefs etc. But he never specifically speaks against those pagan corruptions, such as most of the christian world worshiping on Sunday instead of Saturday. You don't get to pick and choose which parts of the Bible you want to agree with, Mr. Morris. You either believe the WHOLE thing or not at all. It's also clear he thinks humans have an "immortal soul", another idea that comes from ancient paganism, NOT the bible! Mr. Morris likes to criticize some pagan corruptions of the Christian faith, but then he completely ignores other corruptions because that would place him outside of mainline Protestant ideas!!

He also misused some Bible quotes to pretend the Bible says its ok to eat ANY kind of meat. That is absolutely not true and it is very clear via scientific studies and the healthy lifespans of vegans in Loma Linda, California and Okinawa, Japan, that God clearly made us to eat only plants. So Mr. Morris misuses two Bible quotes to pretend to defend any kind of food is good while ignoring the many Biblical examples of vegetarianism. aka Daniel in Babylon, the israelites and manna, etc. manna is plant food, they whined about being forced to be vegan by God, so he gave them quail and they promptly got sick! Along with the very clear quotes in Genesis to Adam/Eve about what their diet would be, and about heaven in the future that make it clear that "the lion will eat straw like the ox" etc. NOBODY will be eating meat in heaven and NOBODY was doing it before sin.

While this book does a wonderful job discussing the Evolution vs Creation conflict and why its so important to take the Bible literally, (I especially like the suggestion that Lucifer believes his own lies, that even the devil might believe in evolution), Mr. Morris is still unable to read the Bible without his mainline protestant beliefs clouding his understanding of the Bible. I don't know if he truly is so deep in mainline ideology that he cannot see these glaring errors, OR he won't write about them because that would make his book even more controversial and upsetting to many mainline christian readers.

P.S. He repeats himself waaaaay too much. His book would probably be half the size it is if he didn't constantly repeat himself.

Morris had a nice idea, but sometimes he goes too far. This book tries to explain how throughout history, particularly that of evolution, there is a consistent hatred for God behind all the science. While this element by itself is true, he then sees the root problem as being evolution-and he even tries to implicate that it is was conceived under demonic influences and that the devil himself is an evolutionist! This last point would be impossible to prove, and it mistakes a branch for a root. Evolution is not the enemy, but an excuse fable pulled out from a hatred for God. And it is one of many, many excuses.

The author traces evolution all the way back to the Garden of Eden, but he does so in a convincing way, at least as far as the ancient Greeks. There are quotes by ancient Greek Epicureans/Stoics that sound like they had read Darwin!
It's a big book with a lot of information, but it is well researched, by a man with impeccable credentials.
Think about it, Lucifer never actually saw God create himself, he only had God's word that it was so, and he chose to believe God was lying from the very beginning! It may be speculation, but it is speculation based on the evidence, and likely close to the truth!
Highly recommended!

A very interesting read for those that question how Satan could ever contemplate Isaiah 14:13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:

The same idea that has been the driving force behind all the anti-God factions that ignorantly attack God's rule.

A very interesting read. I found reading about the history of evolution fascinating. Finally, someone who compiles all the evidence and presents it in a logical and well thought out format. Some of Dr. Morris' conclusions raise intriguing questions. I'd recommend this book to everyone I know.

The Long War Against God seeks to explain how evolution is a tool used to fight the age long battle against the God of all creation.  In fact,  at the end, it actually credits Satan with using it to his advantage.  In supporting his point, the author explain how the theory falls apart in almost every scientific approach.  Physics believes evolution true because biology says it is,  biology believes it because of paleontology, etc. No group has been able to prove it.  As the author says, “Its “evidence,” however, is entirely mathematical, since none of these evolutionary stages have ever been observed, nor could they ever be reproduced in the laboratory.” This theory of evolution is neither observed nor reproduced; therefore,  the hypothesis hasn't been proven.  This book helps to solidify the argument that evolution is merely a tool to discredit the Gospel.

Despite agreeing with much of the book, it is at times too fantastical and reads almost like a conspiracy theory instead of even headed research. It seems that the dispensational standard of exegesis was applied to history, and the results are sometimes as distorted as you'd expect from a dispensational interpretation of Scripture. I also don't think Scripture was handled well, especially when it comes to the Revelation. It's not even a bad book, I just can't take it seriously even when I know so much of it is good.

Dr. Morris offers a comprehensive treatment of the creation vs. evolution debate. It is well worth your time to read/listen to this book. There is so much information to unpack, and it’s a great reference book on the beginnings of evolutionary theory, and its impact on all the nations of the world since it’s conception. Back to Genesis, back to the beginning, for an enriching argument of why this topic is the long war against GOD.

Overall, this was a detailed review of the influence of Darwinism and the theory of evolution on society. Morris describes how Darwins theory of evolution was not a new idea, but one of numerous attempts throughout history to eliminate the need for a divine, intelligent creator. He compares and contrasts this theory with creationism and how these beliefs shape cultures and governments throughout human history. I gave this book 3 stars because it was overdescriptive and redundant at times.

As we, parents in the 21 century, continue to educate our children, reading this book is a must! I will keep this book as a reference book to use as my children finish elementary school and head into their teen years and beyond. The depth of knowledge that Morris uses is unparalleled. His approach in the form of history with proofs is undeniable. Excellent source of data to refute evolution and to prove the Bible is true.

What a great book by a brilliant warrior for God. There are so many nuggets of gold on the critical importance of taking God at His Word in Genesis. How evolution has been used across the ages by Satan to demean God's pinnacle achievement, the creation of the universe, and life culminating in mankind. I will read it again.

Quite the read here.

Morris establishes his arguments by first pointing out the ubiquitous saturation of practically the entire modern culture in evolutionary thought: not just science, but law, politics, the arts, and education have each become claimed territory in the evolutionary framework. As if this wasn't enough, many of the Juedo-Christian institutions of the day have capitulated to the idea, either by flat-out rejecting the Genesis account as myth or allegory or establishing a kind of syncretistic approach to the issue. Having noted all of this, Morris then proceeds to work backwards, meticulously chronicling the history of evolutionary thought. (Darwin and The Origin of the Species are nowhere near the beginning of this debate; they are simply one of the more recent stops along the way, natural selection being Darwin's ostensible contribution & not the evolution concept itself).

Morris continues onto the evolutionary and atheistic engines of the Enlightenment, Greek philosophy, Eastern religion & the New Age movements, and even as far back as the ancient pagan religions at the dawn of civilization. It is a fascinating argument, to be sure: that evolutionary thought finds its origins not in scientific discovery or philosophical enlightenment, but in rebellion towards the Creator God. Morris argues that evolution - encapsulated in the ideas that either there is no God at all (an atheistic expression) or that god is an impersonal force, perhaps embodied in nature itself (a pantheistic expression - with either conclusion resulting in an inconsequential deity with no special purpose in the creation of mankind and who exerts no authority over humanity's actions), and that man constitutes the center of his own existence and must, by his nature, improve - is the only practical conclusion one can come to if one decides to reject a creationist viewpoint.

Morris' arguments are sound and robust, and, as noted before, meticulously noted. Even the arguments he makes late in the book from a place of conjecture are well-informed and persuasive, and do provide possible answers to some outstanding questions regarding a few of the grey areas in Scripture.

The book is long, packed with information. It is, essentially, written as an overview on the topic. It feels somewhat overwhelming to realize that every single subject he addressed in order to establish his case was basically the tip of the subject's iceberg: books upon books have been written on each and every point of contention, inquiry, and history. With so much information out there, it is a wonder that more people are not more aware of the nature of the debate, what is at stake, or to what degree truth is being suppressed.

But, then again, that's why this book got written in the first place.

The Long War Against God, by Henry M. Morris, explains in great detail the convoluted history of the evolutionary movement. Morris starts by explaining how when you break it down Evolution was behind most of the major ideological movements in the past hundred years. He did a very good job pointing out it doesn't just permeate Communism, but also is the motivating theory behind Nazism, Colonialism, and racism.
Next Morris describes the men preceding and contemporary with Darwin who really paved the way for him to popularize Evolution. It's fascinating to see how many people were really responsible for bringing it into the main stream.
The whole book is written backwards, or rather moves backwards through history. That made it a little difficult to follow at times. Next he writes of evolution in the Middle Ages, then Roman and Greek Empires. They left written records sufficient for us to know exactly what they believed.
I thought the next part was a little sketchy as it tried to recreate the beliefs of ancient peoples using their mythology. First to prove they believed evolution and Second to prove that previous to that they had believed in a transcendent Creator.
So now we get to the part I did not agree with. Morris makes the claim that Satan personally believes evolution. That would be pure speculation. Based on James 2:19 I believe it to be wrong.
The final chapter explains how vital Creation is to the Gospel, and I couldn't agree more. Unless we are the descendants of Adam and Eve and therefore the inheritors of their sin nature, Jesus need not have died for our sin. There would have been no original sin to die for.
It's a book that will make you think.

This was at times a difficult read, especially the first few chapters. At times I felt like I was walking uphill to understand some of the points, at others times it was exciting to read. Darwinism was nothing new, the author goes to great length to explain this. We can date many of the tenants well past 2,500 years ago. I was amazed just how anti-christian many of the naturalist from Darwin on back were, they were looking intentionally for a working theory that didn't need a creator. I also have a greater understanding of how creation and salvation are connected issues. And how much darkness and suffering come when mankind deliberately rejects a creator. While this isn't a completely easy or fun read, I especially recommend this for those who want to understand better the spiritual battle that rages on between evolution and creation. You'll also understand how view of our origins (creation or evolution) effects nearly every discipline which breeds a worldview for individuals and society. (Law, medical practices, education, etc) The late Dr. Henry Morris was a brilliant and godly man.
