Filled with terrible folks and brave heroes, cunning folks of all ilks and - of course - fae. A full collection of tales covering many generations and styles, many told in interesting manners which speaks of an oral gathering. All in all worth the read!

Cozy and mystical stories for if you want to read for a little bit, but i did think the last stories weren't really Fairytales anymore, rather folk tales.
However i really enjoyed it and its just really great for if you're in a reading slump (though this can be said for almost any fairytale book :)

Good and right are consistently positively correlated! Yay for the no-nonsense morality and historical storytelling of the Scots! They're so adorable.

I am interested in the intertextuality. So far, I've had nods to Cinderella, Jack & the Beanstalk, Rumplestiltskin.
OK, so I know that feminism is not necessarily alive in the Fairy Tales of old, but some of these Scottish versions send an eye-opening messages ...
And some of the stories are very dark and not necessarily suitable for little children's ears (if you want them to sleep at night, that is!).
Finally, I found the final third of the book quite different from the start. The stories did not seem like regular fairy tales, they weren't all written in past tense, they seemed more modern (modern for when the book was written) and were even darker and less suitable for little ears than the rest of the stories.

I'm thorn what I think about this book... it's interesting to read but just a bit of it was enough for me.
It was to much of the dialectal words and the talklike languish it was written who made it hard to read to much at the time. I had it like a "book-to-read-when-I'm-too-tired-and-don't-need-to-concentrate-on-story".
It might also have been better without all those repeating themes of layout in the stories that are throughout the whole book. After a while I start to feel that I knew every new story I begin with it's not that good.
Just wasn't what I expected sadly.

Read until page 342. The first part of the book was quite interesting with some unusual stories. I felt towards the end of the book that stories were fitted into the book for the sake of it. It just lost its spark.

Mixed bunch of stories; some better than others. Overall proved an interesting read but I doubt I will revisit any of the stories
