I recently had the pleasure to read The Internet Peering Playbook by Bill Norton, aka: Dr Peering (http://drpeering.net/)

Bill has been involved in the peering community for over 20 years and was the Internet Engineering Manager responsible for, among other things, chairing the North American Network Operations Group (NANOG). He was also the Co-founder and Chief Technical Liaison for Equinix, Inc., a large scale global provider of peering and collocation services.

According to it's author whom I met at the last NANOG in Vancouver, there is precisely only one book on this highly specialized relationship building topic. This book isn't about understanding the protocols or the routing algorithms, it's about building relationship and understanding the peering ecosystem and what ultimately motivate one to seek a peering relationship.

The book is conveniently separated in 3 sections: Transit, Peering and IXP, so one can jump right to the appropriate section.

Lots of information on what constitute a good IXP and the business case for peering for ISPs of all size as well as for CDNs. I particularly enjoyed reading his thought on the inevitable power struggle between the ISPs controlling the eyeballs (Hello Comcast) and the content providers, (Hello Netflix and indirectly Level 3).

This book isn't for everyone, but if you have anything to do with the peering community, it's definitively recommended reading.
