Very short story, but I liked it. I want more, too. I think Schneider has a lot of room to play in this world.
A kingdom ruled by a king who does not believe women are capable of having magic power, a dunce of a royal wizard, and Zoe, a real power who comes to the rescue. In her own way.
The society is very misogynistic, but I liked how Zoe dealt with it.
Did I mention I'd like to read more?
[I won a copy of this story from a contest on the author's blog.]
A short story (emphasis on "short") that read to me like the first chapter of a YA fantasy novel: it left me feeling a bit cheated, as I felt there should be more (hint hint, nudge nudge, Maria). Now, whether I would want to read yet another "budding magic user goes to wizard school" novel (albeit with a bit of a feminist twist) is, perhaps, problematic in my case. (I gave it 3 stars mainly because of the aforementioned issues taking it out of my "sweet spot," thought the actual writing was easily 4 stars.)
Excellent short story. I wanted very much more. If the author weren't working on a sequel to her Under Witch Moon right now I'd be hoping she was developing this into a full length novel.
