This reissue of Lavender's classic text tells the exciting story of America's bold westward expansion, man's quest for gold in the Rockies, the tragic banishment of the Native Americans and the ruinous and unchecked exploitation of some of America's richest land.
David Sievert Lavender was a well-known historian of the Western United States, nominated twice for the Pulitzer Prize, who is best remembered by many for his River Runners of the Grand Canyon.
Lavender spent most of his life in Ojai, California. An articulate and deeply knowledgeable speaker on the political and social history of the American West, he often spoke at the annual Telluride Film Festival.
Mostly good anecdotal history of the "Big Divide" area of the mountain states. I found some errors though : like "Jake Slade" instead of Jack Slade, etc. Was written in 1948 so it's a bit old. Interesting stories about miners and railroads, etc.
