This is a condensed version of my review of Perilous Light, which I received from the author for review. For my extended review, please click here.

My Overall Thoughts/Impressions: After only four pages, I was reminded of why I loved the first novel in this series so much. Alyssa is a master story weaver. Four pages in and I was absolutely captivated by this tale.

I absolutely loved this novel. Out of all the forty novels I’ve read this year, this is the second one to receive a five.

The characters are very well developed. I loved the characters Charlotte, Kevin, and Liam. I still haven’t made up mind about Calvin yet, but I know I loved reading about him. I have to admit that Liam just might be my favorite character. He’s the guy that everybody wished they knew. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how his character evolves in the next book.

Charlotte is a strong heroine, but also one who has her failings. I loved that she was so strong and yet still plagued with weakness.

I absolutely love the world-building in this novel as well. In fact, her world-building is tied for the best I’ve seen this year.

This is a very well-written fantasy novel that mixes just enough realism, romance, intrigue, and adventure to leave me thoroughly entertained and absolutely captivated by the tale.

Often times, the sequels to novels aren't as good as the first one and seem to lag. This one was amazing and enhanced the tale. Basically, this is one of the view times I've liked the sequel better than the first one. That was also another reason why I loved this book.

I definitely recommend this series to anybody and everybody. Trust me—you want to buy this one.

In Summary: One of the best novels I’ve read this entire year. I absolutely adore Alyssa’s writing style, her characters, her story line, and basically everything about this book. Just read it and you’ll see what I mean.

After I finished the first book Beckoning Light, I immediately picked up the second, Perilous Light by Alyssa Rose Ivy.

It is unusual that the second book is stronger than the first, but this is by far the better book. We get more adventure, more development of the characters, and a better look at this other world.

Perilous Light takes place a year after the end of the last book. Our main protagonist, Charlotte, has been struggling with being away from her soulmate, or Gerard, who still remains in the other world. She is surrounded by several other guys (Guardians) to protect her from the evil Blake. They adventure back to that world to band with the other rebels to take back their freedom. Kevin, her sibling, once again joins her, and we get the perspective for the first time of Calvin, her Gerard.

As I said before, this is the stronger novel. I loved all the developments, the twists, etc. I absolutely loved that a hint that was placed in the first novel does get revealed in this one. Ivy certainly knows how to plot and wait to reveal her secrets. There's a couple of issues (mainly just personal preference)-- I know why she does several perspectives, but I'm not a huge fan of that. I think it's much more difficult, but almost more rewarding if we only see things from one perspective. I'm also a little confused at times why she selects certain passages to be in one character's perspective when it mostly affects the other.

That said, I greatly enjoyed this book. I rarely get so into a trilogy that I will definitely pick up the next book, but I am eagerly awaiting the third and final book. I am interested to see what she will do with Liam, as I think he will end up being more important than he is already (at least I hope so!), as I think he is the most compelling male character.

Overall, a very enjoyable read, great characters and terrific plotting.

I completely adored Beckoning Light so naturally, I was totally excited to re-enter Energo in Perilous Light!

Book 2 picks up a year from were Beckoning Light ended. Charlotte has been trying to adjust to living a normal life without Calvin. Meanwhile, Kevin has gone off to college. But, of course, the time comes when the pair has to go back to the world of Energo.

I loved hearing Calvin's point of view in this instalment! It made me understand him more and gave me a chance to see both sides of his and Charlotte's relationship.

I also really enjoyed the development of the relationship between Kevin and Samantha. I think Samantha is a brilliant match for Kevin.

I do have to admit, I still favour Liam! (Can I keep him?) He is such a sweetheart and I think it's great that he has more importance in this book. I’m really excited to see how he develops in the next book.

There are even a few laugh-out-loud moments to be had in Perilous Light. Kevin comes out with some hilarious one-liner references:

‘With his long white beard and dark eyes, he looked like a textbook example of a wizard; all he needed was the hat. Less than five minutes into the meeting, I’d met Fabio and Dumbledore—the day was getting better and better.’

Perilous Light makes me want to have my own Guard, go fight the bad guys and help save Energo! This series is truly awesome and I can't wait to see how it all ends in the final book, Enduring Light!

Perilous Light is action packed and full of twists and turns that will rival the previous book.
In this book we finally get to see more of my favorite couple Charlotte and Calvin, but we also find out that there are still a lot of surprises left for Charlotte and her brother on their journey. Charlotte has done a lot of growing up in the past year, but she faces even bigger trials that will test her abilities to the limit.

I highly enjoyed seeing Kevin finally meet his match in the last book and was very curious to see how or if that relationship would develop any further and I was not disappointed. While there were plenty of humorous scenes with Kevin he was also put to the test when he is sent out to find help. We get to see how Kevin adapts to the world of Energo in this book as he tries to find his way in this strange world while coping with his feelings for Samantha.
Calvin is without a doubt my absolute favorite character and I must admit to having a big crush on him. I liked that we got to see a lot more about him in this book. We got to see glimpses of his character before, but we get to see into his head a lot more in this one and he really is a sweet and noble man.
I highly recommend this series to anyone looking for a unique new world with great characters and a bit of romance. For anyone who is already a fan of this series you are sure to love this newest installment!

Book Review

“Perilous Light” by Alyssa Rose Ivy was even better than the first book “Beckoning Light.” As before I was instantly drawn into the story and intrigued by the characters. I was so engrossed in the story I didn’t notice it was coming to end until I could no longer go to another page on my Kindle. I then gave a howl of disappointment as I did not want to leave my friends.

The story drew me right in and I was immediately in the dual world Charlotte, Kevin, Liam, James, and Calvin inhabit. This book was told not only from the view of Charlotte and Kevin, but also Calvin. The addition of Calvin to the narrative brought new insight to the characters and provided a glimpse into the dynamic hinted at in book one.

This is definitely a series worth reading. I am eagerly anticipating the next book. I give this book 5 clouds (a rare and therefore to be treasured rating).

Moving right along with the After Glow trilogy, I read Alyssa Rose Ivy's Perilous Light in the same amount time I did with the first book! They're rather quick reads, and enjoyable ones too!

The one thing that still nags at me that I can't seem to get on board with is the romance! Seriously! It bugs me to no end!! Charlotte is soooo in love with Calvin and for some reason it drives me bonkers! I get that they are fated to be with one another, but I guess, to have that deep romantic connection just appear at the drop of a hat nags me. It's insta love to the extreme! What's worse, Charlotte still has these feelings despite Calvin's actions from the last book. She still loves him irrevocably. And I still feel like she has better options than Calvin. There's still this possibility with Liam, who was her crush from her early teens, and I still can't help but like James. He can be annoying for sure, but there's just something I like about that guy!

Okay, so now that that's out of the way, let's get down to the review. That above was my only problem with the book. I can't ship this romance for the life of me and I keep telling myself to get used to it, but I just haven't managed to get there yet.

It's been a year since Charlotte, Kevin and co. have returned from Energo. They bring with them James and Henry, another of Charlotte's guards who was loyal to her. Life has gotten to be pretty normal, but almost immediately the group heads back to Energo. There's been a plan of a resistance almost since the moment they left, now it's time to move the resistance forward and put a stop to Blake. While Kevin is out recruiting the other countries? territories? to their side, Charlotte, her uncle Monty, James, and Liam go off to find her mother. For as we learned last go around, Charlotte's mother is very much alive and being held prisoner somewhere by Blake.

The story is still told through Charlotte and Kevin's point of view, though this time Calvin gets a few turns as well. And what with my sort of dislike for the guy, you can imagine how I felt about that! Though he does go through a lot of startling revelations. Things Charlotte already knew, naturally, and is soon alongside Charlotte and her cause. Though I can't help but feel Charlotte took him back a little too easily, it was her undying love for the guy that was the main motivator.

I was surprised by how much of the book was spent in Energo. It was nearly all of it, but as the story moves along, you learn why that is. There's a connection for Charlotte and Kevin to Energo and it's very deeply rooted in family. Which we still haven't seen their father yet, but there was yet another startling reveal towards the end of this one that puts him in a new light! I expect we'll be seeing him in the final book of the trilogy.

It may seem like I am not enjoying these books because of the romance, and while I am not at all enjoying that factor, I am enjoying the books! They are rather intriguing. I am realizing that Energo is basically a fantasyland of sorts. Magic exists as do a few other surprises. It's a series that's pretty rich in world building, especially in this one. Why we don't get detailed details, I feel like I have a better grasp on what this world is all about and I'm sure I'll be learning more about it in the final book as well.

Alyssa is most popular for all her New Adult series and this seems to be her only YA one from what I gather, and it's still a remarkable read! True, there's no strong romances or swoon worthy ones, but the books are packed with some pretty decent action and character development! Charlotte has done a lot of growing and maturing in these two books, you wouldn't recognize her from the girl she was at the start of the series. I cannot wait to see how things end with her story and all her friends and family!

--Full, non-spoiler review courtesy at Book & Movie Dimension a Blog--

A while back had mentioned that Perilous Light was one of those novels that was highly anticipating. Once it finally arrived can happily mention is a read that devoured in about 11 hours. Needless to say in a day! It was one of those novels that hits you with an intense sensation to read through without stopping since you want to absorb it as soon as possible. The entire time in reading was held captivated which was helped by Aylssa's interesting and creative fantasy world building. Oh yeah there were some new characters and new relationships which were a wonder to read into. If you happened to have reached in reading Beckoning Light (The Afterglow Trilogy #1) by Alyssa Rose Ivy and found it to your liking then continue it with Perilous Light. Contains quite a few surprises that pop-up!

In the Afterglow Trilogy #2, Perilous Light , the story keeps on spinning again. Charlotte had to leave Calvin behind in Energo so its no secret Charlotte mourns him. Charlotte though has to hold her ground to make a point to Calvin she is the one to believe and not Blake. So if he doesn't she can't be at his side. Still their being apart is wearing on them both. While Kevin is begining to feel that basketball just doesn't carry the same appeal it used to be.

Kevin knows his real duty lies with protecting his sister Charlotte as her Guardian warrior. So when he gets ambushed by old Guardians of Charlotte's mother who happened to be an Essence too, it just makes Charlotte as well as Kevin realize they have to return to Energo to see what in the world is going on over there.
Once there they see that Blake's number one goal at the moment is conquering lands and that his devious influence is going strong. Charlotte, Monty, Lawson: Henry's older brother, Liam, and James decide to split up to have a better chance at not only stopping but also to rescue Charlotte's mother which towards the end of Beckoning Light we learn is still alive but in a semi sedated state. Along the way, Charlotte discovers that her and Liam's spark a long time ago may have some influence over Liam's skilled archery and strength. Meanwhile, Kevin has to learn how to be a leader in front of others so he can have hope in obtaining help from other countries besides Energo to fight against Blake and his army. During their seperate journeys we get to see Charlotte and Kevin under pressure and try to handle themselves. We also get to see new places other than Energo. Some of which aren't stuck in the old days but choose to be modern and others with shapeshifters or some strange-looking beings. Fascinating to read since you really experience the develpment of Fantasy. All in all these were some of the main surprises that were interesting although there's still more in Perilous Light!

Perilous Light continues more secrets and danger only found in Fantasy that Fantasy fans who like their reads with romance should enjoy.
Overall: Amazing read!

One year after being forced to leave Energo, Charlotte Calloway is wasting away in Charleston. Like any junior in high school, Charlotte gets up and goes to school, consumes far too much coffee, and fritters away the hours with her friends. However, for those who really know Charlotte, something is wrong. That something is the knowledge that her mother is likely still alive, her soul mate Calvin has yet to come to his senses and return to her, and if Charlotte were to return to Energo, she will be killed. Suddenly, high school doesn’t look so bad, right?

Meanwhile, Kevin Calloway is living his dream playing basketball for Carolina. Like his sister, though, something is missing. For Kevin, what’s missing is serving as one of Charlotte’s Guardians and Samantha, the super-tough warrior he left behind when forced to flee Energo. For the Calloways, life in the “real world” just doesn’t measure up to life in Energo. Then, one night Kevin is abducted, only to be warned that should he and his family ever return to Energo, their lives, and those of their friends serving in the Resistance, will be forfeit. Time to go back to Energo!

Once the Calloways step foot in Energo, the search is on, and the group is forced to separate in order to accomplish all their goals. For Charlotte, that means finding and rescuing her mother and learning to harness her considerable powers. For Kevin, the separation means travelling to yet another foreign land to persuade the heads of each country to support the Resistance against Blake. Once the group is separated, the plot slows a bit, allowing the two groups to travel and work toward accomplishing their respective goals. The action is lessened in this part of the book, but Ivy gets the chance to really dig in and build the back stories for many of the characters. I love this part of the book! Just enough minor action is included to keep the action-junkies happy, and a ton of information for those of us who totally dig the back stories! The action and information are seamlessly blended and move the reader along smoothly toward the tumultuous end.

And what an ending it is! Ivy couldn’t have avoided the great battle at the end. The back stories, the two group’s missions, and the minor action all lead up to the dramatic ending. Once again, Ivy spills a few more family secrets and leaves the reader with a pretty significant cliffhanger. The lives of each of the major (and a few of the minor) characters are yet unresolved, and the final book in the series (Enduring Light) promises to be quite an adventurous ride!

The bottom line: I love middle books like Perilous Light, and I am a big fan of character-driven novels and plot lines that are varied. In many ways, the second book in a trilogy will make or break a series for me. As a curious reader, I need to know more about the characters to which I have become attached: Where have they been? What’s their background? Why do they behave the way they do? Perilous Light has it all for me! Ivy handily deals with each of the characters of interest, gives just the right amount of action, and answers a few of the unresolved questions from book one.

It's been a year since Charlotte has been back to Energo; a year since Charlotte has been in Calvin's arms and the pain hasn't eased up since. It took every ounce of strength that she had to leave Energo and Calvin to make her way home where she could clear her mind and see if the feelings she and Calvin shared was normal or not. She also had to leave so that Blake could no longer have control over her and her new powers. Not a minute goes by that she hasn't thought of Calvin or the deception he caused. Calvin didn't trust her enough to be the Essence and now Blake is ruling, when it should be her and Calvin. If she ever made it back would she be able to fully trust him again? And if she went back would she be able to find her mother that she once thought was dead?

Now that Charlotte and her guardians are heading back to Energo, she soon back into her role as Essence and has to learn to use her powers again. But without the guidance from her mother, it all seems hopeless and Charlotte fears she is headed for failure. If she cannot find her mother she may let down the very same people her mother fled long ago. Charlotte must help the Resistance or Blake's evil will take over all of Energo.

Kevin also has a role to step up to; he must learn to be the leader that he was born to be. But the ever confident Kevin soon finds he may not have what it takes to be this leader everyone expects him to be. Will his journey to get the help from the Pact help him find his role or will he also fail those counting on him?

And here I thought that Beckoning Light couldn't be topped...but I was proved wrong. Alyssa told an awesome story about not one, but 2 people finding they do have what it takes to lead people and do the right thing after overcoming thier own personal fears. Even though both had called another place home all their young lives, they still felt that need to protect a place that desperately needs them.

Perilous Light was another great page-turner just like its predecessor, and I was thrown every which way with my feelings for the characters. I went in rootin’ for Liam because of my love for him in Beckoning Light...but was soon finding myself leaning towards Calvin. I am literally stuck on the fence with those two. I don't think I have ever had a book do this to me before. Well I might have, but can't think of one right now off hand. I seem to like when a book mixes things up in the love department giving a different take on love triangles. And Kevin grew on me so much more in this book. I adored him and Samantha's budding relationship and look forward to more of them.

Thanks Alyssa for allowing me to read and review one of your fabulous books yet again. Keep up the awesome job and I look forward to more and more (and more) of your future works. For readers who love a great story on overcoming fears and characters finding their way...this series is for you. The sweet, well written romance is just an added plus!

Perilous Light is the second book in the Afterglow series, and it is even more addicting than the first one. The biggest mistake I made was picking this book up when I had plans within a couple hours. It was hard trying to put it down to get ready. Just like in the first book, Beckoning Light, the viewpoints alternate among Charlotte, Kevin, and sometimes Calvin. With the different events and travels during this book, the multiple viewpoints allow readers to follow them all. Each chapter is titled with the speaker so it is not confusing to the reader.

In Perilous Light, the story finds us one year later after the events of the first book. Charlotte is trying function in her life, without Calvin, just waiting for the day to go back to Energo. When the Resistance requires their help, Charlotte, Kevin and the others have no choice, but to go back. Once in Energo, Kevin and Charlotte separate to complete individual tasks with the aid of their friends. Both must succeed or they stand no chance to defeat Blake, who has taken control of Energo.

Through the viewpoints of Charlotte, Kevin, and Calvin, the reader gets to see both the journeys of Charlotte and Kevin, and the evil plans of Blake. I like this because it creates a well-rounded story, but it is not confusing. Once I read the first few pages, I was hooked right back into the world that Alyssa Rose Ivy has created. I loved Beckoning Light, but I loved Perilous Light even more. Do not start this book if you have other things to do that day, because this book will consume your attention.

The action is defiantly more prevalent in this book, but that is a very good thing. I still love the sibling relationship between Kevin and Charlotte, even if I did not get to see a lot of it in this book. This is because Kevin and Charlotte spend a lot of the book away from each other. This series is worth your time, and if Perilous Light is any example, the third book in the Afterglow Trilogy is going to blow my mind.

My Summary:
A lot has happened in the year since Charlotte left Calvin in Energo. Her brother has left for college, Henry is living with them, James is still in Charleston helping to guard her, and Liam is ever faithful always there to provide comfort and friendship. While her life in Charleston remains relatively safe, she can't stop thinking about Calvin and how she left him behind. She's also had to come to terms with what is means for her to be the Essence.

When unexpected events take Charlotte and Kevin back to Energo, their friends rally behind them. Once there, Kevin and Charlotte feel that it's best to split up and build their force to fight Blake. Will they each be able to gather enough strength to make the world of Energo right again?

My Take:
When Charlotte and gang returned to Charleston at the end of book one, I was left wondering where the story would build from there. Well, I have to say that I was definitely able to connect more with the characters more this time around. On occasion, the second book can leave me a bit disappointed, but I found the opposite here. I felt like the plot become more interesting and the characters were more developed.

I was absolutely thrilled to see more of Liam in this book and I have my fingers crossed that Charlotte will come to her senses and ditch Calvin for Liam. I love how Liam is a constant support for Charlotte. I was so excited that his feelings for her became more clear and I loved the dialogue between them.

Kevin's character became much stronger too. I love the role he has taken as one of Charlotte's guardians. His dedication to his sister and his family is touching. Also, I loved seeing Kevin and Samantha develop more of a relationship. Samantha is a kick butt character and is a perfect match for Kevin.

Again I say, that I enjoyed seeing how the plot developed. The ending battle scenes give the reader just enough of a preview into the big climax that is sure to come in last book in the trilogy. I definitely look forward to seeing how the story ends.

First off, go over and check out my review for Beckoning Light!

I must say that I was nervous about the second book in this series. I enjoyed the first, but the second really knocked it out of the park for me!!

I love the different cast of characters, but my favorite would have to be Liam. He is the type of guy that we all wish we had. Even just for a friend. He is sweet, caring and very protective over Charlotte.

I enjoyed having alternate POVs between Kevin and Charlotte. I enjoyed watching Kevin as he tried to keep his feelings for Samantha under control and how he coped with having to go out and try to find some help.

I really loved the world building of Energo and wish that I could go visit myself. I enjoy any story that has an alternate world. Energo is very unique and piqued my interest.

Thanks to the author and Enchanted Book Tours for introducing me to this great series!!!

This is book two in the Afterglow Trilogy. I reviewed the first book, Beckoning Light, a while back and really enjoyed it. So I was thrilled to get a chance to review this one.

Charlotte has learned about her place in "another world" and is coming to grips with the fact that she is the Essence and belongs to someone else. But before she can get control of her special abilities she finds herself at war to save her new home.

This book was just as good as the first one. It deals more with her new life in Energo and how she is learning to use her powers to help those around her.
It is just as fascinating as the first book. The author has a beautiful way of writing a story that pulls you along almost before you realize what is happening.
My only complaint is that now I have to wait for the third book to come out.

I received this book free of charge in exchange for my honest review.

Perilous Light followed Beckoning Light flawlessly. Like Beckoning Light, the story is told from both Charlotte and Kevin's point of view. In addition, Calvin also gets his point of view shown as well. I enjoyed his perspective. It gave you a glimpse of where he stands. Characters grow throughout the book, and you'll question some of their true allegiances. Perilous Light introduces you to new lands, new species, and new characters. They all come together and perfectly fit in with the direction of the story. Alyssa Rose Ivy has once again given us a wonderful novel, and the release of the third and final book in the trilogy, Enduring Light, can't get here fast enough. I'm still Team Liam!

Simply put this book is stunning. Perilous Light is amazingly great and just as amazing as the first book in The Afterglow series, if not even better.

Perilous Light, starts off almost where Beckoning Light left off, give or take a few months. Charlotte misses her love that she left in Energo even though he betrayed her and she is back home. She still has her protectors of course with her, but her older brother is off at college.

I don't want to give too much of this book away, but they end up having to go back and fight the fight to fix things that have been messed up. they also go back to try to find Charlotte's mom, so she can help teach Charlotte what she needs to know.

Let me just say, I love Liam. Really I do. Charlotte and crew have been in Charleston a year after escaping Energo, but the time has come to go back. Aiding the Resistance to overturn Blake splits the group up. It was interesting to see Kevin needing to find his inner strength. I like his growing romance with Samantha as well. After the bomb that got dropped at the end of book 1, Charlotte goes with Liam, Monty and James to find someone that will help strengthen Charlotte and help bring down Blake. We discover each new land through Kevin and Charlotte. I really like this series and can't wait to see what happens in book 3!

Incredible sequel from a very promising Author! The book picks up a year after the last book and quickly dives in with plenty of adventure and romance. It is not long before they return to Energo for more adventures. Probably my favorite part is the further development of Kevin and Samantha. Also learning more about Calvin was very exciting. The story provides plenty of action, romance, and comedy. I can't wait to read the next and consider this book even better than the last!

Book Review- Perilous Light by Alyssa Rose Ivy

It has been a year since Charlotte left Enero. It’s been difficult being away from Calvin. Liam and James have been keeping an eye on her. Henry has also infiltrated her inner circle and is dating Rachel. Kevin is at college playing basketball.
Charlotte knows they have to go back. The resistance needs help and they need to save her mom. It happens sooner rather than later. Charlotte, Kevin, Monty and her guardians enter the gate. They have a job to do. Charlotte is to take a group and go save her mother. Kevin is taking another group to persuade other countries belonging to the Pact to side with the resistance against Blake. He has grown stronger and darker. His powers are surprising. They need all the help they can get to defeat him.
Kevin has to blindly be the Ambassador and Charlotte has to trust in herself as the Essence. They are both tested at every turn. As they prepare for real battle they learn what they might have to sacrifice.
This is the second book in the series. The story picks up a year later. You can see how Charlotte is suffering without her Gerard. This story is full of surprises concerning Liam and what Kevin achieves. I also like that Charlotte is gaining confidence and embracing her destiny. She is my favorite character. She has had to make the tough choices.
This book is setting up for the epic battle that is coming. It gives you a little taste at the end. There are some shocking revelations from the author. This story was a good bridge of the beginning of the series, setting up for the end. I can’t wait to see how it ends. A great addition. I give it a 4 out of 5.

First thoughts:
Finishing Perilous Light within a day, it turned out to be a fast and easy read for me - just like its prequel. While some conflicts were solved too casually for me and the love story still isn't exactly what I was hoping for, I enjoyed finding out more about Charlotte and the world she and her friends are pushed in.

More detailed:
Being set a year after the ending of the first book, Perilous Light starts off on a light note and introduces us to the things the characters have experienced since then. After not having been to Energo for the whole time, they tried to lead a life as normal as possible, but not forgetting what still awaits them in case of their return.

What I loved most about Perilous Light was the more elaborate world-building that I had actually hoped for after finishing Beckoning Light. Alyssa Rose Ivy created a place with many new things to discover and I loved finding out about the different places and people in this world.

At the same time though, I'm still not completely happy with the love-aspect of the story. While Kevin's love story is believable and cute to witness, I still had problems feeling the pull between Calvin and Charlotte. I'm not sure though whether it is because of the magical part of their love or because I'm completely in love with Liam and wished Charlotte were too.

Again, I would recommend this for a younger audience because of its characters' slight naivety and how certain problems were solved a bit too easily for my taste. Nonetheless it was an addicting read for me and I didn't find it easy to put it down - especially towards the end. If you're looking for a new world to delve into, you definitely should give the Afterglow series a chance.

Alyssa Rose Ivy did it again, and again, and again. She’s created this world beyond world, and it’s captivating. The first thing you might take notice is the double POV on her first book of this series, The Afterglow, and now, the triple POV is here. The usual Charlotte and Kevin, and now Calvin.

Right from the beginning of the book you will realize how different Charlotte is. She is not that shy girl we met previously, but she is had the confidence to step out of her shell. The problems she left behind in her true world haunt her during day and night. And she is about to find out what she is capable off with family and friends supporting her. And friends, I meant Guardians.

I know I did not explain much of the book on my last review, and I may seem out of place here using jargons you have never read about this story before. And I’m sorry, but I don’t feel like explaining much of what I have read so far. Although you should know that I bought the pack instead of the individual books. Yup, my first purchase of this kind. Random comment, so let’s return to the review.

On Perilous Light, Charlotte, Kevin, Liam, Henry, and Monty are back to Energo to find the one member of the family that isn’t really dead; Monty’s sister and Charlotte and Kevin’s mom. Their success depends on Charlotte mastering the little she’s learned about her powers and trust her gut feeling. I can say that she’ll succeed on retrieving her mom, and having a few laughs before the huge meaning in front of her becomes clear: protect those she loves no matter the price.

Perilous Light is the second book in Alyssa Rose Ivy’s Afterglow trilogy. With lots of characters and civilizations, plus separate worlds, it might seem a little confusing to anyone who’s not read part one. But it follows the previous book nicely. The narrators, Charlotte and Kevin, have grown a little older. Meanwhile love interest Calvin gets to add his voice, useful since the battle lines are going to be drawn three ways. Sports star Kevin might learn a new appreciation for his sister’s shyness when he's asked to undertake some public speaking, in an alien land. And quiet Charlotte will soon have to choose between physical attraction and the lure of magical love.

The world beyond the gate grows in this book to include more civilizations and creatures. Meanwhile the real world remains convincingly modern with underage parties and the lure of alcohol. While the characters continue to abstain and maintain their PG13 rating, it seems surprisingly easy for them to take risks and go partying.

Soon they’re heading into the unknown again, with danger, temptation and confusion, a mother to be rescued and a throne to be won. The mix of modern and medieval dialog isn’t always convincing and leadership skills might seem oddly assigned, but there’s magic in the air, nicely woven in some really good scenes, and there’s mystery still, with intriguing hints of how the story will be completed in part three.

{my thoughts} – This book picks up a year later after the first. It is written in the point of view of Charlotte, Calvin and Kevin. Charlotte is forced to come to terms with her position is the new Essence. Kevin is faced with learning how to lead innocent individuals into battle. Calvin is forced to walk away from the only individual that has offered him guidance in order to protect Charlotte’s well being.

The more I read this story line the more I become sad when it ends. It ends leaving me wanting more and questioning everything I have read in order to try and figure out what will be in the next book. However, I am not good at deducing such information so it has come as little surprises when I learn something new. The ending of this book has a wonderful surprise, one that makes me want the third book right now so I can see what is going to happen.

If you like books that are based on fairy-tale like story lines this is an excellent book set to read. I have enjoyed it from the very start and am definitely interested in how the series will be concluded.

{reason for reading} - I was given a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

Wow!! This book was amazing. I was so glad that Calvin finally realized what Blake was up to we he listening in on their conversation. I'm happy that Calvin is back with Charlotte and they are working to take down Blake. So many nations are willing to stand with Kevin and his sister to finally defeat him. I still could not believe Emma was a live and James sacrificed his live to save the Charlotte. Finding out Liam was a true guardian wasn't really a big shocker because he wanted to be the to protect Charlotte since she was kidnapped.

This is not a trilogy that gets better as it goes. Each book is worse than the one that comes before it. The pacing is off, there are huge holes in plot and character development, and the tone remains that of a very young writer. It wasn't worth buying.

This book focuses on rescuing Emma, Charlotte's mom, and convincing the other nations to help the resistance fighters of Energo. The book culminates in a huge battle that leaves one of the guards gravely wounded.
