Why would anyone try to kill a healer?

Deenah's quiet life as an apprentice healer in the remote village of Brae's Creek is shattered when a stranger gravely wounds her master and flees into the wild. For all her skills, Deenah is unable to identify the strange forces at work on the injury.

To save her master's life, Deenah must join the young Warder for the area, Kaern, and an aging veteran tracker, as they set out on a manhunt into hostile lands.

It was starting to get interesting and it was over. I didn't realize that it was only 25 pages

This is a good little story that keeps a fine slip throughout. Despite it's short length, there was enough world-building to make the story feel involved. I liked that the characters knew each other from previous encounters, and the reader got to learn about these engagements as they went. I feel like, perhaps, this could have been enhanced by spending more time with character development (maybe even having them live out some of these scenes) before the plot begins. Because this is a short story, perhaps a "prologue" short story that comes before this one would better engage the reader before things get too crazy for the characters. It ends on a good note, concluding the main plot of this volume and introducing what will happen next well.

This is a difficult book to rate. It's a fantasy short story and it does stand alone; it's interesting and a good short read. But at the same time, there's not a lot of world-building. Info is provided only as the reader needs it and sometimes after the fact. Personally, I'd have loved more description of the world, its scenery and healing arts, to go along with the action, although the plotline seems sound and the characters for the most part are likeable. (The tracker was a bit tiresome, but that's personal opinion.) Let's call it three stars.

I liked it. It wasn't the best story I've ever read, but it was interesting. I liked the feel(but then, I'm a sucker for anything set in another world/seems medieval). There were a few spots that seemed a bit..underdeveloped..or the writing lacking. But, it was still interesting. A little..well..typical..but still..enjoyable.

This was an exciting little tale that opens up a huge interesting world with a big question at the end. It made me want to read the next part of the story.
