If anyone ever asked me which book made me wish to be a writer, I would pick Tracy's Tiger. It opened my eyes. I have read it many times, since I was a kid, but I still remember the first time I read the first three sentences. I instantly fell in love, the kind that lasts for life.
It is insanely simple and pure. Every sentence in this book counts. Every time I read it, I have the feeling, that Saroyan stripped the words naked. Simple can be powerful. The book has similar mojo as the Little Prince, but I have to admit, that I read the Prince much later in my life.
In a nutshell, this book introduced me to the independent clause. It made my life easier.
Also, there is a tiger, litres of coffee and New York. So it can't get much better.

O tejto knihe som sa rozprávala so svojou 8 ročnou sestrou.
Teraz má také obdobie, že keď sa jej niečo nepáči, tak vrčí ako tiger (nosí aj tričká s tigrom).
Priznala sa, že má tiež tigra, ale nechce sa o tom veľmi rozprávať a potom na mňa zavrčala.
Tiger je svojhlavosť, papuľnatosť, túžba, hnev, (a) aj láska a bez tigra sme chorí.

My literature teacher stated that the tiger meant love. While it probably was true in this case (and mostly it is), I don't think it equals. In my opinion, the tiger stands for the passion, the energy, the soul, the thrill, the will - to live, to matter, to do anything „above the usual”. From the psychological point of view – the motivation. Love is probably the strongest and the most intense source – especially for the target group of this book. Still, I hold, not the only.
Most of the crazy stuff I do for women, but there are some, infrequent, exceptions, I like to believe... :-D And Friedrich Nietzsche would probably have something to add, too.

I am reviewing the story by this title, which is 38 pages in the edition I have. The book is "Essential Saroyan" published by Heyday Books. It contains 9 stories, 3 excerpts and 2 other pieces. Tracy's Tiger is a beautiful story. Saroyan's voice is fanciful and bold. I look forward to reading the rest of this book.

Whimsical and fun. An allegory. But I am lost. I think that I might have understood in high school English class. I don't understand it now and it makes me feel a bit like an adult who has grown up and cannot see fairies, leprechauns and Santa Clause.
Tracy is a young man who recognizes a need for a tiger. In his teen years he encounters a black panther at the zoo and recognizes it as his tiger. Never mind that it is a black panther. The rest of the book is about his early employment, meeting a girl, losing the girl, moving away, coming home... all with his tiger. He is self confident and this appears to have something to do with the tiger. What does the tiger represent? Halfway through the book we encounter a second tiger. The girl has a tiger and their two tigers play during their brief romance. Later, when he is sent to a psychiatric facility, all the patients have tigers who are in various states of decline. Very depressing. What are the tigers? Character? Soul? Love? Ambition? --- Throughout the book the tiger(s) are unseen by everyone but Tracy. Then one day he is in the city and his tiger is seen. The police shoot it and it flees, wounded in a forepaw. The tiger is missing for days. This is when Tracy is committed to the psychiatric center. The city is in turmoil because they know a wounded tiger is on the loose. They release Tracy to help find the tiger. He recreates the work situation he enjoyed in his youth, becoming more robust as the day goes on. He finds his tiger. He finds the girl. As he goes off with the girl, the tiger is gone. the final line is "That is the story of Thomas Tracy, Laura Luthy, and the tiger, which is love."
In some reviews I've seen that people identify the tiger as representing love. I don't think that is correct. The final sentence defines the whole story as love. If the tigers represented love, why did he find his tiger at an unromantic moment in his teens? Why was the tiger integral to his self-confidence at work? Why was it called a tiger but is really a black panther? Why didn't other people have tigers before his discovered the tiger of his girlfriend? Why did the patients at the psychiatric ward have decrepit tigers? Why were people suddenly able to see his tiger and drive it off?
Here is a try.... the tiger represents the facade that we erect to go through life. He does not recognize the facade of others because... effective facades are invisible. As he falls in love with Laura, he sees her for who she is and recognizes her facade. He leaves. When he returns to town, his facade crumbles, represented but the image of people attacking the tiger. He is committed to the psych ward. There he sees people with crumbling, decrepit facades. He is released. He seeks to reconstruct his facade and succeeds. But in the process he connects with Laura. With true love, he no longer needs his facade.
There!... that interpretation might earn me a grade of B in high school English. But this interpretation definitely stands between me and restoring my ability to see fairies and leprechauns.

Tracy's Tiger was a love, isn't it amazing? What I've learnt is that people have a part of themselves which give them a strength to dare to do crazy things, with they can see the beauty of the ordinary things left unheeded mostly and feel the realest feelings in a real way (with strong roar and sense and soul). I found William Saroyan was interesting person and I want to read more form him. I wonder about what was he thinking while he was writing this book, what inspired him, how his life was, what kind of person he was. I think I want to talk to lot of dead people.

Čítala som túto knihu v nádhernom českom bilingválnom vydaní z 2011 z vydavateľstva Argo. Celý vizuál knihy neuveriteľné vystihol atmosféru a ducha knihy.
Tak ako som bola vždy zvedavá prečo sa skupina "Chinaski" volá práve takto, rovnako mi ešte ako tínedžerke nešiel do hlavy názov skupiny "Laura a její tigři". Sú to odkazy na kultové knihy a kultových autorov, ktorí sa nemusia nutne "páčiť". Sú to odkazy na život a vnímanie života iných ľudí a svoj vlastný aký je alebo by mohol byť.
Pri čítaní knihy som cítila niečo ako melancholický smútok. Smútok za atmosférou, mladosťou, očarením, odvahou, sklamaním nad sebou samým a rozhodnutiami, ktoré v živote robíme a silno nás ovplyvňujú.
Každý z nás nosí v duši pantera, ktorý sa môže maskovať ako tyger. Niekedy vrieska a kričí na celý svet uááá a inokedy sa vlečie z posledných síl, vychudnutý, slabý, zranený.
Každý z nás túži stretnúť svoju "Lauru" v mužskej či ženskej podobe, mnohí ju necháme odísť, iní ju stretneme rovnako ako Tracy opäť, mnohí ju nestretneme nikdy.
Toto je novela, ktorá nikdy nebude žiadnym človekom čítaná dvakrát rovnako. Nikdy nás nezastihne v rovnakej životnej situácii, s rovnakými pocitmi. "Vrece kávy", ktoré nesieme na svojich pleciach nebude mať pre nás vždy rovnakú váhu. Niekedy ho nesmieme ako nič, inokedy je ťažké ako smrť.
" Tracy není vubec blázen. Doktor Pingitzer říka, že vlastně všichni, co jsou v Bellevue, ztraili někde v životě lásku. Pro ně je láska něco sakramentsky blízkého němoci."

ENGLISH: This is the sixth time I've read this novella, the second in its original language. It's one of my Saroyan favorite novels, only second to The Human Comedy, 1943 edition, for I didn't like so much the 1966 shortened edition, which is the only one now available.
"Tracy's Tiger" is a remarkable book: it's full of imagination, fantasy and humor, and has a lot of important things to say about human life, through the symbol of Tracy's Tiger; who is not a Tiger, but a Black Panther; who is not a Black Panther, but an imaginary animal;
The book includes the full poem by William Blake ("Tyger, Tyger"), although it doesn't make any philosophical analysis, as Borges does, for instance, in Borges profesor: Curso de literatura inglesa en la Universidad de Buenos Aires. The protagonist says he doesn't understand a thing, but he likes the poem.
I suspect Saroyan gave his main character the name Tracy, just to be able to insert the pun "Thomas Tracy is not crazy."

Tracyho tiger je krehký príbeh o mužovi čo mal svojho tigra, ktorý len náhodou mal podobu pantera a bol jeho neviditeľný priateľ, spoločník a tak trochu zradca, keď utekal keď nemal... Tracy je zvláštny, takým tým spôsobom, že váhate, odkiaľ tá postava vlastne je, či je človek alebo len sen, prízrak čo ukazuje naše vlastne diery v živote.
Tracy miluje kávu a chce byť ochutnávač kávy, zatiaľ si zarábajúc prenášaním kávových vriec pre súkromnú firmu akéhosi Otta. Práve tam, kúsok odtiaľ stretne Lauru a až vtedy tiger dostáva skutočný zmysel, ktorý sa celkom odhalí až v poslednom riadku knihy.
Je to podivný príbeh, plný netradičných postáv a zápletiek, svojských dialógov, tigrov - čo sú pantermi, a krásnymi kresbami - teda v tom slovenskom vydaní od Martiny Matlovičovej.
Čitateľ v niektorých úsekoch váha či Tracy nie je blázon, veď kto ma vlastného tigra od mala a vyhovára sa na čokoládové cukríky, keď ho prichytia bozkávať matku jeho priateľky? A predsa je reálny, možno ta káva, jeho ambície nebyť náhradník a ani nahraditeľný alebo len tá prostá láska, ktorú k svetu prechováva, k Laure, k tigrovi...
Tiger je symbol a má desiatky prekladov do jazyka iných ľudí, tiger ako láska, fantázia, náš svet, snívanie a desiatky iných dojmov čo v sebe nosíme ako naše modly - našich tigrov. Pre každého iný, špecifický tiger blízky jeho duši.
Kniha ma nadchla, nebudem tvrdiť opak, bola som potešená, prijemne naladená a raz si tu knihu prečítam znova, hľadajúc medzi riadkami niečo nové, lebo tá kniha je tak plná medziriadkového priestoru, že to človeka až šokuje... Také pátravé čítanie.
Niekomu sa kniha zrejme páčiť nebude (klišé veta viem, viem, viem...), je snová a moja mama by zrejme skončila po prvej kapitole ("fantasmagoria"), ale pre ľudí, čo sa radi strácajú a znova nachádzajú, čítajú medzi riadkami a nedajú sa zlanáriť dojmom, že tiger je len tiger, to môže byť dobrá jazda...
A plusové body sú aj za priloženie básne Tiger, Tiger od Blakea, len škoda že v takom hanebnom preklade.

A parable, with some clever philosophy and a heavy author voice.
I enjoyed this very much, but then I am very fond of Saroyan and very forgiving of author voices and parables.
There are a number of moments with the psychiatrist character that are superb. Some genuine wisdom.
There's a point at which the main character and another man are confronted together by a stream of journalists and rubber-necking folk. Many of them want to shake their hands. The other character does not shake their hands because he fears he is being mocked. Tracy shakes every hand offered to him, for he decides that he may as well, for some of them may be sincere, and the ones who are not are hopeless.
This struck a chord with me. Those who are not are hopeless. This answer is a way to handle the voice of insecurity, the thought that everyone around you may be judging or misjudging, accusing, or mocking, speaking behind your back when you leave the room, or anything of that variety that you have every feared at any time in your life. He says he approves of you, but does he really? The answer is that you may as well shake their hands, for some of them are sincere, and the ones who are not are hopeless anyway.
Someone who is not sincere is lost. They might be able to find themselves later, or in other circumstances, but in that moment they are lost, alone in their heads, and worthy of pity. When I encounter someone who is clearly not sincere, a part of me wants to spit upon them, and another part of me wants to hug them. Because being lost is worse than being mocked.

PODCASTové zamyslenie je tu
Túto knižočku mám od Zuzulivres, že nech niečo mám na ďalšiu tému klubu, optimistické a zváštne knihy(ideálne ležiak)... A ja ako puk pozerám na túto nenápadnosť čo sa mi ocitla v ruke, že ehmmm ďakujem. Áno, to bol môj reálny myšlienkový pochod :)
Dnes si ráno hovorím, že už by som to aj mohla prečítať (klub sa presunul, ale aspoň bude mať). A otvorila som ... THOMAS TRACY mal tigra.
Zvyšok je vlastne história, lebo áno, táto kniha je zvláštnym spôsobom veľmi optimistická, ale i kúsok naivná, krásna, jednoduchá aj zložitá, krátka aj dlhá svojím spôsobom. Ostáva odporúčanie, nech si ju prečítate tiež.

Saroyan is one of my favorite people. I'll read anything by him. Turns out that this is one of his very best stories. It's got all the goods: strangeness, sincerity, love, madness, excitement, hope, sweetness. I'd love to read the version with illustrations (I read this out of the William Saroyan Reader).
One of my favorite parts is when the "psychiatrist" from Vienna sits down to talk with Thomas Tracy about his tiger. Lovely:
"Ah ha. Work," said Dr. Pingitzer. "I hate work. I hate psychiatry. I *always* hate work. I like fun, play, imagination, magic."
"Why do you work, then?" Tracy said.
"Confusion."
"You understand psychiatry?" Tracy said.
"Psychiatry, no," Dr. Pingitzer said. "People - little bit. Little, little, little bit. Every year, every day - less, less, less. Why? People is difficult. [...] Ah ha. People is pain, people is sick, people is mad, people is hurt, people is hurt *people*, is kill, is kill self. Where is fun, where is play, where is imagination, where is magic? Psychiatry I hate. People I love. Mad people, beautiful people, hurt people, sick people, broke people, in pieces people, I love, I love. Why? Why is lost from people fun, play, imagination, magic? What for? Ah ha. Úpřimně. Vůbec nevím, co si o této knížce mám myslet. Já možná nejsem úplně ideální typ čtenáře na tento typ abstraktní literatury. Mám radši, když je ten děj jasnější a já nemusím celou knížku přemýšlet, co tím vlastně má autor na mysli. Ale na druhou stranu musím přiznat, že se mi knížka jako celek líbila, i když po jejím dočtení, bych si ji ráda přečetla ještě jednou. A nejraději bych vymazala úplně poslednou větu, kterou se nám autor snažil evidentně pomoct a něco vysvětlit, ale já si nemůžu pomoct, ale já to prostě pochopila trochu jinak a tímto mi v tom akorát udělal zmatek. Ale za svým názorem si stojím a baví mě, že v této knížce může každý vidět něco jiného, vnímat to jinak a liší se to nejenom mezi lidmi individuálně, ale může se to lišit u jednoho člověka, když to bude číst v různých životních obdobích či věku.
Je to útlá knížečka, kterou jsem měla přečtenou za hodinku a přemýšlím o ní dodnes. Určitě si ji mám v pláně ještě někdy přečíst. Po jejím přečtení se totiž nedokážu zbavit potřeby představovat si toho mého tygra. Jak asi vypadá? Je plný energie, krásný a živý, nebo už je trochu unavený a smutný? Anebo mi společnost dělá těch tygru víc?
Jednoznačně knížka, která nechá váš mozek šrotovat.
Je to útlá knížečka, kterou jsem měla přečtenou za hodinku a přemýšlím o ní dodnes. Určitě si ji mám v pláně ještě někdy přečíst. Táto zvláštna, útla knižka, ma dostáva znovu a znovu, vždy novým spôsobom. Nespomínam si už, koľko ráz som ju už čítala a ťažko povedať, koľkokrát sa mi to ešte prihodí, ale jedno viem určite – skôr či neskôr opäť nastane vhodný moment, napríklad noc nespavosti tesne pred úsvitom, kedy budem zabalená do deky blúdiť po (niečom) byte a hľadať, čím preklenúť medzičasie pred novým dňom, a vtedy, práve vtedy ju znovu nájdem, ako už toľkokrát. Táto kniha je láska – čo sa vlastne nikdy nestala a predsa je formujúca.

Velmi zvláštní podobenství... Příběh mladíka, kterého od mládí doprovází tygr. Od začátku jsem si myslela, že tygr je symbolem pro vzdor a touhu po svobodě. Zatímco autor na konci říká, že tygr je láska. Líbí se mi, že ve vlastnictví tygra spočívá moudrost, kterou ostatní vnímají jako šílenství. Je zarážející, jak snadné je někomu pomocí psychiatrie dokázat, že "trpí mučednickým komplexem, psychotickou domýšlivostí a pohrdáním kolektivním úsudkem".

Tracyho tiger je láska! Pre mňa každopádne, ale tak to prezrádza na samotnom konci aj Saroyan.
Ja som ho čítala už dávnejšie a tiger pre mňa odvtedy symbolizoval odvahu, energiu, úprimnosť k sebe a k svetu. Niečo, čo nás robí nami, tú vnútornú jedinečnú krásu.
Dokonca som si na Tracyho tigra spomenula vždy, keď som nosila náušnice s panterom aka tigrom. Rada som si ich pripla práve v dni, kedy bolo dôležité dodať si odvahu.

Thomas Tracy měl tygra.
Byl to sice černý panter, ale co na tom, pro Tracyho to byl tygr.
Měl krásné bílé zuby.
A takto Tracy svého tygra získal:
Když mu byly tři roky a začal poslouchat, jak co zní, tu kdosi řekl tygr! Ať už tygr! bylo cokoli, Tracy to chtěl.
Jednoho dne se Tracy procházel s tátou po městě, když uviděl cosi za výlohou rybárny.
"Kup mi toho tygra," řekl.
"To je humr," opravil ho táta.
"Tak to nechci," řekl Tracy.
Nebylo pro něj žádný problémem postupně, krok za krokem dokázat, že Tracy je duševně chorý. Jde to velmi snadno. A lze to dokázat u kohokoli.

How could you not to love it? William Saroyan is a great author. I would describe him as an adult child. The way he expresses himself, the way he thinks about normal things in our lives. I envy him.
Oh yeah, and the book. It is awesome. Everything looks so simple in the eyes of Tracy's. And it is, that's just us, who complicates the world. Finally Tracy got what he wanted and what he fought for. And what I do like most, is the idea of what *tiger* does really stand for.
