A New Text for Modern China is an updated and revised version of A Chinese Text for a Changing China, one of Cheng & Tsui's most highly praised titles. The strengths of the earlier text have been retained, but the content has been revised to reflect the most recent developments in China and the Chinese language. In this third-year Chinese language textbook, elements of a language instruction book and an up-to-date cultural reader are combined into an innovative whole. Each of the five units in this text begins with an original essay on topics relevant to everyday life in China. Each essay is accompanied by three newspaper or magazine articles from Chinese publications, which serve to illustrate the conditions of present-day China. The reading material is followed by lists of new vocabulary, stock phrases, and exercises designed to reinforce learning.
This is an excellent high-intermediate Chinese book. It is aimed at 3rd year college Chinese students.
All the texts and exercises are in both simplified and traditional Chinese. I found the texts short enough to keep my interest and not be overwhelming AND long enough to be substantive.
Also, the subject matter is both relevant and useful, although I imagine the current situation in China is somewhat dated by now (it was published in 1998).
The glossary in the back is also quite helpful (although it has only simplified characters). I did have to look up some words that I felt should have been new vocabulary, but this was easy enough to do on my iphone dictionary.
The English used in the grammar notes and examples/translations of Chinese sentences read quite well, which was refreshing, given the poor English I've seen elsewhere. Not perfect English, mind you, but hey, we're the ones learning Chinese!
All in all, a great reader. Just to give you a sense of the topics:
Unit 1: Population and Housing Unit 2: Education and Employment Unit 3: Lovers and Marriage Unit 4: Family, women and Children Unit 5: Phases of the Economic Development
