Bridging the gap between ancient tradition and contemporary perspective, this authoritative reference shows how the saints can inspire people in the modern, complicated world.
In this collection of short bios about the saints, the author chose to write about many of the major saints as well as many of the more obscure saints. The author chose saints that he felt were interesting examples of the spiritual issues that concern modern men and women, Many of the saints lived in the "modern age", i.e. post-Renaissance. The author also includes quite a number of layperson saints.
All together this makes the books very interesting, informative and readable!
this is my favorite bk on the lives of the saints...the unique format includes a short historical overview on the life of the saint, a prayer, and a spiritual practice where one can become more saint-like by emulating the life of the saint...over 200 saints are covered with an alphabetical and a calender index...there's also a helpful introduction on what it means to be a saint, both informally and formally as in the process of cannonization in the catholic church...
