Sean Michael

Often referred to as "Space Cowboy" and "Gangsta of Love" while still striving for the moniker of "Maurice," Sean Michael spends his days surfing, smutting, organizing his immense gourd collection and fantasizing about one day retiring on a small secluded island peopled entirely by horseshoe crabs. While collecting vast amounts of vintage gay pulp novels and mood rings, Sean whiles away the hours between dropping the f-bomb and persuing the kama sutra by channeling the long lost spirit of John Wayne and singing along with the soundtrack to "Chicago."

A long-time writer of complicated haiku, currently Sean is attempting to learn the advanced arts of plate spinning and soap carving sex toys.

Barring any of that? He'll stick with writing his stories, thanks, and rubbing pretty bodies together to see if they spark.

As noted in the blurb, this was produced as a serial and it’s pretty much a direct translation, simply placing all of the chapters in one book complete with chapter titles. It overlaps the time-line of Connor’s Journey. Jester has just been promoted to a new job and when he collects his pay from his supervisor, he’s invited to the man’s apartment for dinner. Jester is flattered to be asked and agrees, even though he seems rather oblivious to the fact that he’s gay.

He is dazzled by the rooms Hawk has at the Velvet Glove. He’s from a very poor family, I believe he has about 8 brothers and sisters, and he gives all of his salary to his mother to support them, as well he looks after the young ones. Hawk realizes that Jester is completely innocent and takes it very slow, in fact not even really introducing the truth of what type of club the Velvet Glove is. The overlap comes with the other book when Hawk, a good friend of Desmond, and Jester are invited to the after-party of Connor and Des’ commitment ceremony, where oddly a few couples perform sexually as gifts to the couple, opening Jester’s eyes.

I liked Jester a lot, and I liked Hawk much more than Des. Hawk has a regular day job but he manages to live at the fancy club by working there part time training people. To do what I have no idea. Jester is young and fairly innocent with a strong commitment to his family, and people take advantage of this. When he tells his mother he’s spending time with Hawk, she demands he ask for money, when he refuses she tosses him out, but he continues to send his family his salary for his siblings. I was a little surprised he’d never even realized he was attracted to men, or didn’t appear to be, but took to it like a duck to water.

Because of the chapter breaks which were serial breaks it came across a bit disjointed and it’s definitely not riddled with sex as many Sean Michael books. They barely have intercourse until nearly the last chapter and in the early chapters we are told they spend the weekend doing sexual things, but we’re never shown much more than one incident before they move on to the next chapter. The BDSM is essentially non-existent except for observing it in others, the use of handcuffs and Hawk musing about what he’d like to introduce Jester to.

I think I liked it more than Connor’s, but there were a few editing errors I caught. For fans of the Velvet Glove it will be interesting, especially the scenes at Des and Connor’s ceremony as there were other couples there who may have featured in other stories. I’m not certain, but I had that impression I should have known who they were. If you’re not into Velvet Glove, well, likely not a must read.

The Velvet Glove series, of which this book is a part, is interesting because its stories explore D/s in a future setting that isn’t all that different from what we know today. Yes, it is set on a different planet, in a club known as the ‘premier BDSM club of the galaxy’, but the stories are still fundamentally about men who explore their kinks. The somewhat more exotic setting adds just that bit of extra flavor I really enjoy. Some of these stories are a little edgier, some of them explore more extreme kinks, but this one is fairly tame as far as the BDSM element, and is more about the D/s aspect of the developing relationship between Hawk and Jester.

Jester is a total D/s novice, and learns about a new way of life from scratch. He is basically curious, open-minded and, while he isn’t looking for someone who will take care of him, finds that it greatly simplifies his life. He used to constantly worry about providing for his mother and younger siblings, but had no life of his own. Once he discovers what fun enjoying himself can be, how sensuous he is, and how well it works for him, he is much happier. A lot of the things Hawk introduces him to are scary at first, but Jester is curious enough to try – and finds he really loves submitting.

Hawk is a take-charge kind of guy. Like Jester, I didn’t immediately trust him or his motives, because it all seemed too good to be true. What is Hawk going to get out of the deal he makes with Jester? But it becomes obvious pretty quickly: he enjoys being in charge, he has the means to support both of them, and he falls for Jester’s charms hook, line, and sinker. I loved that he took his time with Jester, moved at his lover’s speed, not his own.

This relationship truly is two-way, it just takes a while for Jester to understand that the difference in what both parties put into it doesn’t mean one or the other is better or worth less. They are both equally important, and become even more essential when a power exchange is involved on top of a loving relationship. If you like D/s stories that are about the submission and the enjoyment of letting go, if you prefer sensual love scenes, and if a slightly futuristic setting could be the icing on the cake, you might like this short book as much as I did.

A sweet story of finding love

Finding a man that wants to love you and make you his number 1 is sweet and having the young man love you back unconditionally makes the story better

Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.

Rating: 8/10

PROS:
- There are 2 elements in this story that I particularly like reading about: one, Jester is not only a virgin, he’s never even been kissed before. And two, Jester is incredibly poor. Hawk isn’t as rich as some of the other characters who frequent the Velvet Glove, but he’s able to expand Jester’s horizons significantly simply by feeding him real meat and buying him soft clothes.
- Each of the stories in this book contains some elements of BDSM, but they’re all pretty different as far as what the characters like and how they behave with their partners. In this story, Jester is such an innocent that the BDSM element is extremely light, and that felt appropriate to me.

CONS:
- Jester’s family doesn’t approve of his relationship with Hawk, and when his mother finally tells Jester what she thinks, he’s distraught about it. After Jester tells Hawk what his mother said, though, the topic never comes up again. It seemed to me like that topic was dropped rather abruptly.
- Throughout the book, there are quite a few paragraphs that have no end punctuation. There’s one page that has 5 paragraphs with no period at the end.

2015 Re-read:

Very sweet indeed. Next to no friction (aside from the obvious kind) between the protagonists. Or indeed anyone. As such this is a complete soothe-fest.

I think reception will depend a lot on the current mood of the recipient. I definitely liked this, but I also think it’ll be good to break this up with something else for a book or two. If I can get myself to do that. I kind of want to wallow in sweetness and lack of sorrow. I just don’t want to get bored, if I can help it.

I do remember, however, that some of the stories from the second anthology are a little more, uh, well… I guess you could call them extreme in nature. Ethics and morals might get twisted some in the fourth story.
Even in these first four stories there was plenty of childlike behaviour in the subs, but discipline and lack of choice were only really hinted at. Love’s story being the exception, but that was a mere quickie anyway.
Well. Maybe that shift in palatability will be enough to keep me from getting bored.

Not a bad little interlude in the series. There was a lot of sex in this one, which is fine, and just enough information about the characters to understand them. Since I've read this one out of order, there were several characters mentioned that I wasn't familiar with but I plan to read those books later. Nice quick smutty read; I think my only complaint is that I would have liked to see more variety in the sex scenes.

I enjoyed this book, but I would have liked some resolution about the situation with Jester and his family.
I appreciate that this book was originally part of several books in a set, so it maybe that the issues get resolved later.
That said, the growing relationship was gentle and interesting and Jester's learning of all the different parts of Hawk's life was beautifully written, it reminded me of Regency stories where someone poor, tries to adjust to the life of the rich. 3.5 stars rounded up.

Sweet, innocent Jester makes this story. He is fun and loving and sensual that just makes you feel good and smile all the way through this story. Would have loved to have the story a little longer, have Jester be collared by Hawk and go to work at the Velvet Glove as Kestrels Assistant. Hopefully that is in a future story of the series. I'll just have to read the next one.

A lovely read

I like rediscovering books I've read before awhile ago, it means that I get to introduce the characters and series to myself all over again. This is one such book\series. Jester's introduction to the world of kink is a sweet story focusing on the pleasure between him and Hawk. So enjoyable.
