This was a very short and simple book that would be great to read aloud to pass time. Lower grade levels would love it and stay engaged, however I probably wouldn’t read this aloud to the higher grade levels.
This story follows a Jack-o’-Lantern sitting on a porch rail as he tries and fails to scare Halloween related creatures. Finally, a witch arrives and lights his candle, allowing Joey the Jack-O'-Lantern to finally be scary.
Joey the jack o lantern wants to be scary for Halloween but he cannot frighten anyone until the old witch states that Joey is ready!
Students could use this to create their own jack o lantern and come up with an adjective to describe it. They can also put it into a sentence or create their own story about their jack o'lantern.
I picked this book because I thought it would be a fun read around Halloween. It is cute and includes several Halloween symbols that students will be able to recognize. I also liked this book because it doesn't focus only on holiday but the fall, which might be better for students who do not celebrate Halloween but can still identify with fall.
