A forensic sketch artist with an uncanny ability to reanimate the deceased through her drawings, Gina Cross is troubled by a new case. It concerns a murdered teenager who recently gave birth. But who is she and where is her baby? Police get a break in the case when Gina's likeness produces the girl's mother. But now another pregnant young woman has gone missing—and Gina has a bad feeling.
When the clues lead to an upscale fertility doctor and his private clinic, Gina's assistant, Megan, goes undercover, posing as a lost and vulnerable girl "in trouble." And Gina's worst fears are confirmed—something terrible is happening in the clinic's back rooms. With time running out to find the missing girl and Megan's safety also in jeopardy, Gina races to expose the clinic's sinister secret before more innocent lives are taken.
I really enjoyed this book overall, but the ending was a bit rushed with the killer reveal. I had my suspicions who it was but the way Cunningham confirmed it felt like she just wanted to be done with writing the book. A few things seemed a bit unrealistic but overall a good mystery.
My gosh, these people are the fastest drinkers ever! I keep noticing that they take time to make coffee/brew tea/open beers/order drinks and within two lines of dialogue, everyone has finished off their beverage and are moving on. It's a weird thing to notice, but I just keep seeing it.
Also, if Gina is so bad at managing her own art store, then why does she have it?
Well, it's sad to say that this didn't get better and the shortcomings were all, oddly enough, in the characters interactions themselves. In the final few chapters, Needless to say, it was not a book I'll read again. 1/5
Main character is an unlikable brat. No justice, literally half a page to sum up the whole book with zero mention of the dead girl the book starts with… and no follow up on what happened to any of the ‘bad guys’. The story is all ridiculously convenient, beyond the benefit of just being a story.
Also, the Kindle version has an impressive amount of typos/grammatical errors – even referencing a character with a completely different name in the ‘Afterwards’.
‘Cry Baby’ by Fay Cunningham Published by Robert Hale, September 2010. ISBN: 978-0-7090-9107-3
Gina Cross works for the police as a forensic artist, as she has the ability to draw the face of a dead person and bring it to life, so very useful for identification purposes. She becomes convinced that the body of a dead pregnant teenager is connected to a missing girl, Jack Lowry’s sister. Jack is a freelance photographer who works with her on/off lover investigative journalist Adam Shaw.
The dead girl had an orange leaflet hidden in her shoe, so when an orange leaflet is put though her letter box, Gina decides to follow it up. Her investigation takes her to Willow Bank hospital where she is convinced that something is wrong, but what? Megan, Gina’s assistant decides to conduct her own investigation and in doing so puts herself in grave danger, and ultimately also Gina.
There were some good characters, and despite Gina’s annoyance with him I liked Adam. Whilst I did work out what was going on, there were still some surprises in store for me. An enjoyable mystery, I hope that there will be another adventure for Gina. ----- Lizzie Hayes
THE BEGINNING STARTED OFF MYSTERY LIKE, WITH THE TWO TEENAGER GIRLS MURDER, THEN MISSING SOPHIE, WHO WAS THE SISTER OF ADAM'S BEST FRIEND. THEN ALONG THE WAY, THE NOVEL BEGAN TO BE A BIT FLOWERY, CAUSE YOU WANT TO FIND OUT THE DEAL WITH SOPHIE. BUT AFTER THAT THE ENDING WAS A HAPPY ENDING FOR ALL THE KEY CHARACTERS!!!
The suspense was there but the thriller sizzled out to a fairy tale. I wrote a blog about the main character though, I felt she was developed in a realistic manner.
