Yamamoto Hideo , is a Japanese manga artist best known for the manga series "Ichi the Killer" (which was adapted into a live-action film in 2001) and the series, Homunculus (manga). Recurring themes in his manga are crime, sexual deviations, and psychology.
Does Nanako have a missing front tooth? That's somewhat less than presentable for a high class escort. This volume is as slow as the previous 6 or so. Barely anything happens, instead it focuses on making Susumu understand what he did wrong in his life up to this point. Nanako and her missing tooth are instrumental in helping him.
So is he supposed to be the banker with glasses? But that guy is very cute, not ugly like he claimed. Or is that just a parallel of how she treated him? We really coulda lost a ch or book's worth of repetition and made his childhood backstory more sprinkled.
When we get to the egg, the drawings can come off goofier and uglier than scary or...otherworldly? It also seems like a different artist drew some of the last quarter.
I always wonder if these manga artists know the logic of their stories from the get-go, because it always seems like they make it up as they go along, and a close examination would probably make the timelines/actions look off just to supply a few cheap twists. This is all decent, exciting at points and then slightly disappointing at others in its incessant complexity.
Also, I never liked the homeless characters because they were usually kinda filler/said obvious stuff, so I extra don't like seeing them near the end instead of anyone from his more distant past. Halfway through that bit, I kinda figure what it'll mean. Again, everyone's connected but blah.
This manga series is about a homeless man, Nakoshi, who has trepanation surgery and can see homunculi. In the last couple of chapters, Ito and Nakoshi have been investigating a woman with a face-changing homunculus while Nakoshi grapples with who he was and who he has become.
Volume 14 is a deeply emotional read. We are given bigger hints about whether or not the homunculi are real representations or mere illusions. We also get to see how Nakoshi is changing as he attempts to help a homeless man out get of his mirror shell (homunculus) and back into the world. Where does he go next?
HES GETTING THERE. HES STARTING TO SEE HIMSELF AND UNDERSTAND HE NEEDS TO TALK TO HIMSELF. this was such a good volume we are getting more of him - both thru the woman and the chef in the park. its moments like these i feel like maybe he is trying to do good and help these people and not just be his normal self...
Yamamoto twists a standard post-modern dilemma in such a way that it feels contemporary, yet if he just told the narrative plain without all the hallucinatory madness, it would be cliched po-faced junk.
A bit repetitive at the beginning (which is kinda an issue with the manga as a whole), but definitely ends strong. There are some pages here that are breathtaking. This one and the first two volumes are my favorite so far.
14 issues in and I can say that this one has left me incredibly emotional. Heartbreakingly beautiful in so many ways. going to be so sad to read the final one.
If you read just the first couple of volumes you'll definitely find it creepy ; I know many people who drop it for that reason but if you keep reading you'll see how amazing this is!
