About the author

Michel Houellebecq (born Michel Thomas), born 26 February 1958 (birth certificate) or 1956 on the French island of Réunion, is a controversial and award-winning French novelist. To admirers he is a writer in the tradition of literary provocation that reaches back to the Marquis de Sade and Baudelaire; to detractors he is a peddler, who writes vulgar sleazy literature to shock. His works though, particularly Atomised, have received high praise from the French literary intelligentsia, with generally positive international critical response, Having written poetry and a biography of the horror writer H. P. Lovecraft, he brought out his first novel Extension du domaine de la lutte in 1994. Les particules élémentaires followed in 1998 and Plateforme, in 2001. After a disastrous publicity tour for this book, which led to his being taken to court for inciting racial hatred, he went to Ireland to write. He currently resides in France, where he has been described as "France’s biggest literary export and, some say, greatest living writer". In 2010 he published La Carte et le Territoire (published the same year in English as The Map and the Territory) which won the prestigious Prix Goncourt; and, in 2015, Submission.

This volume of essays contains Interventions and Interventions 2, thus offering a compendium of book and movie reviews, general essays on the state of the world and some excellent interviews that illustrate Houellebecq's attitude towards the state of the West and his mission as a writer. Sure, he is an author who defends himself against aggressive public interest by creating a public persona (much like Christian Kracht), but it feels like a lot of thoughts he elaborates on here point to his actual positions: His thesis that postmodern humanity is becoming increasingly unhappy due to the radical capitalist logic of the market economy and sex as a narcissistic field of competition; his ideas about the human longing for the metaphysical; his argument that humanity is willing to destroy itself in order to escape fear and pain.

A highly interesting book for people who have already read a considerable amount of Houellebecq - beginners will probably get lost in the disparate themes and text forms. Also, I guess that readers who are highly familiar with the French discourse will get more out of certain texts that refer to very French topics and French celebrities.

Sin ser el mejor Houellebecq, me ha parecido interesante.

"¿Puedes hablarnos de esa teoría sociológica según la cual a la lucha por el éxito social propia del capitalismo se suma una lucha más brutal, más desleal, en este caso de signo sexual? Es muy sencillo. Las sociedades animales y humanas establecen diversos sistemas de diferenciación jerárquica, que pueden basarse en el nacimiento (sistema aristocrático), la fortuna, la belleza, la fuerza física, la inteligencia, el talento…, por otra parte, todos estos criterios me parecen igualmente despreciables, y los rechazo; la única superioridad que reconozco es la bondad. Actualmente nos movemos en un sistema de dos dimensiones: la atracción erótica y el dinero. El resto, la felicidad y la infelicidad de la gente, se deriva de ahí. Para mí no se trata en absoluto de una teoría: es cierto que vivimos en una sociedad simple, así que estas pocas frases bastan para dar una descripción completa."

"La inteligencia no ayuda en absoluto a escribir buenos poemas; sin embargo, puede impedir que uno escriba poemas malos. Jacques Prévert es un mal poeta, más que nada porque su visión del mundo es anodina, superficial y falsa. Ya era falsa en su época; ahora deslumbra por su nulidad, hasta el punto de que toda su obra parece derivarse de un tópico gigantesco. A nivel filosófico y político Jacques Prévert es, sobre todo, un libertario; es decir, fundamentalmente, un imbécil."

Tiene pasajes muy interesantes, otros más aburridos, insustanciales, o equivocados. Pero leer a este autor es food for thought, siempre hace pensar.

If you want to understand anything about his later writings, this book is a must have. Early essays, interviews, observations and plain nice writing.

Read it and be a better world citizen.

Get to know Houellebecq, read this set of important critical writings and get astonished, surprised, maybe angry and disgusted, but always respecting his way of arguementing, pretty straight forward yet sometimes coming from an unexpected angle – at least I am.
I especially recommend his essay about Lovecraft – the man behind the phantastic stories and the nature of the stories, the importance of them for the genre – and the transcription of the conversation between Houellebecq and his Dutch translator into Dutch: Martin de Haan.
Overall you get a thorough insight into the background and motives of his novels and other writings and the way Houellebecq thinks about the society, directly around him in France as well as intercontinental. JM

“El mundo como supermercado” es el primer ejercicio de publicar las reflexiones de Michel Houellebecq, que por entonces se había consagrado como uno de los novelistas más provocativos e influyentes de Francia.
Columnas, ensayos, entrevistas transcritas, incluso su participación en una exposición de una galería. Todo ocurrido entre 1992 y 1997 y rescatado para este libro pues Houellebecq entiende que las reflexiones son un material narrativo tan bueno como cualquier otro. Muchas de ellas están rodeadas del pesimismo que le es tan propio. Por ejemplo, su temor ante la caída de la civilización de occidente, que luego en 2015 plasmará en su obra “Sumisión”. Lo más destacado debe ser su análisis sobre la poesía, un género que entiende como herramienta de percepción del mundo en cuanto apertura a la delimitación del espacio-tiempo, tan difícil en un mundo individualista que ha vuelto imposible todo entendimiento político.

“Se puede hacer una comparación entre las ofertas de pollo y las minifaldas, pero la analogía termina ahí: en la revalorización de la oferta. El verdadero paraíso moderno es el supermercado; la lucha se acaba a sus puertas. Los pobres, por ejemplo, no entran. Uno gana dinero en otro lado; y luego va a gastarlo ante una oferta innovadora y variada, a menudo inefable a nivel de gusto bien documentada desde el punto de vista de la nutrición”.

Como escritor de notas de opinión y culturales, hace bastante agua. Su idea de las artes puede entenderse como reaccionaria, (salvo cuando escribe sobre poesía y literatura) pero es fuertemente coherente con toda su concepción de mundo. Copio varios fragmentos que me sirvieron para entenderlo mejor. Hay muchas cosas que critica positivamente y otras negativamente. Copio sólo las primeras. Las críticas negativas las trabaja hasta el hartazgo en sus novelas: decadencia de la sociedad francesa, la lógica del liberalismo sexual posmoderno, etc. (Las itálicas son mías)

La unidad, línea directriz, obsesión en la obra de Houellebecq según él mismo:

Ante todo, según creo, la intuición de que el universo se basa en la separación, el sufrimiento y el mal; la decisión de describir este estado de cosas y, quizás, de superarlo. Los medios –literarios o no– son secundarios. El acto inicial es el rechazo radical del mundo tal como es; también la adhesión a las nociones de bien y mal. La voluntad de profundizar en estas nociones, de delimitar su dominio, incluso en mi interior.

La novela y el saber (el enfoque patético y el clínico)

Habría que conquistar cierta libertad lírica; una novela ideal debería poder incluir pasajes en verso, o cantados. O diagramas científicos. Sí, eso sería perfecto. Tendría que caber todo. Novalis y los románticos alemanes en general aspiraban a un conocimiento total. Renunciar a esa ambición es un error.

Houellebecq, autor moral

Las sociedades animales y humanas establecen diversos sistemas de diferenciación jerárquica, que pueden basarse en el nacimiento (sistema aristocrático), la fortuna, la belleza, la fuerza física, la inteligencia, el talento..., por otra parte, todos estos criterios me parecen igualmente despreciables, y los rechazo; la única superioridad que reconozco es la bondad.

La incertidumbre metafísica de los grandes momentos históricos (mayo del ’68, las guerras, el fin del mundo). Concepto de transición.

Veo un rasgo común en todos estos testimonios: durante unos días, mágicamente, una máquina gigantesca y opresora dejó de funcionar. Hubo una flotación, una incertidumbre; todo quedó en suspenso, y cierta calma se extendió por el país. Por supuesto, poco después la máquina social volvió a girar aún más deprisa, de un modo todavía más implacable (…) Pero a pesar de todo hubo un momento de interrupción, de vacilación; un instante de incertidumbre metafísica.

Un modo de resistir (budista; "esa religión atea")

Cada individuo es capaz de producir en sí mismo una especie de revolución fría, situándose por un instante fuera del flujo informativo-publicitario. Es muy fácil de hacer; de hecho, nunca ha sido tan fácil como ahora situarse en una posición estética con relación al mundo: basta con dar un paso a un lado. Y, en última instancia, incluso este paso es inútil. Basta con hacer una pausa; apagar la radio, desenchufar el televisor; no comprar nada, no desear comprar. Basta con dejar de participar, dejar de saber; suspender temporalmente cualquier actividad mental. Basta, literalmente, con quedarse inmóvil unos segundos.

Fue un gran ejercicio interrumpir Sumisión para leer este. La mayoría de los textos de este librito van desde el año 1992 hasta 1997. En 20 años no cambió de ideas, pero enriqueció su estilo.

It starts off with about a hundred pages about a SF writer Lovecraft, H.P.. It almost made me want to read a book by the guy. Almost, but then I realised SF is for movies and series, not for books. So I wisely decided not to.

After this it's a compilation of stories, essays and interviews. They are best read in small doses, a few stories at a time at most. It is mostly fantastic stuff but you get used to the tone and atmosphere of the stories and their impact decreases when you read to many of them in a row. There are some dark opening lines in these stories, darker than a black steer's tookus on a moonlight prairie night: "Life is painful and disappointing", "The world is a developing suffering", "The purpose of a party is to let us forget that we are lonely, unhappy and destined to die" and my absolute favourite "The woman was talking about hanging herself; The guy was wearing a nice draping fabric" (the last one is even better in the Dutch translation "De vrouw had het erover zich te verhangen; de man droeg een lekker zittend stofje", genius).

I'm quite sure Houellebecq in written form is much darker than the man himself in real life. It's probably partly a pose to sell more books. He's thinking "those dark existentialist European brothers and sisters will eat this shit up! All those book nerds reading Sartre in college to soothe their souls and confusing adolescent years will love this!". And guess what, this nerd does.

Me encanta este hombre. Necesitaba este libro. Aquí podemos encontrar desde artículos suyos y entrevistas hasta poemas. Es para leer despacio y en profundidad. Me han gustado mucho sus reflexiones sobre arte, lectura, literatura, bondad… Lo recomiendo mucho.

Short clinical dissections of contemporary life (very inspired but not new if you've read his novels). I was completely surprised by his interest and insights into poetic perception. Just wonderful. Also, his contemporary reading of Schopenhauer (The world as supermarket) and the loss of affect in art. I was thinking of Baudrillard the entire time. The inescapable detachment and ironic distance as the only possible way of perceiving reality, while at the same time the yearning for meaning.

"Mined by the cowardly obsession of political correctness, stunned by the waves of pseudo-information that gives them the illusion of permanent change (we cannot think what was thought ten, a hundred or a thousand years ago), contemporaries of the West are no longer readers; they cannot satisfy the humble ask of an open book: that they simply be human beings, thinking and feeling for themselves. What is more, they cannot even play that part for another being. They should; because that dissolution of being is tragic; and each one, moved by a painful nostalgia, is still asking others what he himself cannot be. Everyone is still looking, like blind ghosts, for that weight of being that can no longer find in themselves. That struggle, that permanence; that profundity. Everyone fails, of course, and our loneliness is terrible."

El mundo como supermercado es una colección de artículos en prensa, entrevistas, epístolas y reseñas cinematográficas. Documentos que por una u otra razón guardaban cierto valor para Houellebecq y que andaban desperdigados en diversos periódicos y revistas. Esta breve antología de textos sirve para reunir en un único volumen las ideas del autor francés en torno a los más dispares temas, algunos de los cuales solo rozan tangencialmente su obra, mientras que otros la atraviesan de cabo a rabo. Contribuyen, pues, a esclarecer el pensamiento de un autor siempre dado al malentendido y a la deleitosa controversia. (...) Ver a Houellebecq disertar sobre el lenguaje y el mundo contemporáneo resulta fascinante, pero algunos de los textos son totalmente prescindibles, y su aproximación al arte contemporáneo (Ópera Bianca) es una tortura. A pesar de ello, este libro resulta bastante esclarecedor y debería ser una lectura obligada para todo seguidor del escritor francés, unos de los grandes antipáticos de nuestra era.

Els llibres d’Houellebecq, particularment els seus assajos i col·leccions de peces breus com aquest, sempre contenen gemmes acompanyades de peces anodines o per a consum reduït. En aquest cas, entre les gemmes cal trobar la seva crítica certera al liberalisme importat nord-americà, a la diagnosi del deteriorament del cos social fruit de la globalització desfermada, a la denúncia del trist destí de l’home aïllat i desarrelat per culpa del capitalisme. Per moments veiem en el text la veu de l’existencialisme de Camus, l’anhel de comunitat. La seva sortida, però, s’acosta massa a l’actitud cínica, a l’individualisme que tan critica. Malgrat tot, l’anàlisi sempre és acurada i punyent. Sempre capaç de trobar noves lents per fer el diagnòstic de la decadència d’Occident. Per davant dels fets i anticipant gran part de la seva obra. En definitiva, un llibre interessant i que fa reflexionar sobre les grans obsessions de l’autor: la solitud, la manca d’afecte, l’escriptura, la poesia, l’aïllament.

Pues... bueno.
De por sí, es un libro que contiene ideas interesantes. Sin embargo, nos habla de escritores, entrevistas u obras de las que ni siquiera he escuchado en mi vida, por lo que me he sentido muy perdida leyéndolo; no captaba las referencias.

Por lo tanto, no creo que sea un mal libro; he sido yo la que se ha equivocado al escoger la próxima lectura. Sabiendo esto, sí que me gustaría releerlo algún día, pero no sin antes haber investigado o leído acerca de las referencias que aparecen en estos ensayos.

Me pasa con Houellebecq como con Panero, cuando me asomo a su yo más real espero un hombre en bata, desaseado, con un discurso inconexo, llamativo y enajenado con los brazos en alto y moviéndolos hasta el paroxismo. Pero no, ni mucho menos. La lucidez, coherencia y complejidad de las inquietudes y obsesiones del francés son, cuanto menos, interesantes. Lástima que el libro en sí no tenga mucho recorrido (y que el autor haya renegado de algunas de sus ideas). Aun así, particular acercamiento.

Houellebecq es un tipo difícil para algunos, así como difícil es escribir su apellido correctamente. Las opiniones vertidas en este libro son simplonas a ratos, pero envueltas en papel brillante. Su añoranza los tiempos de antes es aburrida, pero hay otros ensayos muy geniales. Para los interesados en el autor, es buen libro.

Вже з назви збірки можна зрозуміти що автор зібрався іронізувати над сучасним світом і агонією людей, які готові знайти вподобання у всьому, що їм підсунуть на рівень очей і у правильно підібраних кольорах пакування. Якщо це перше, що збираєтесь читати у Вельбека, тоді краще відкладіть і почніть з чогось класичнішого за форматом.
