Turning sixteen is supposed to be a milestone, a rite of passage, another year closer to being an “official” adult. For Baxter, her upcoming sixteenth birthday is looking to be a nightmare of epic proportions, because the family skeletons have started coming out of the closet in droves! Baxter discovers she has magical abilities, they are strong, they are rare and almost everyone wants to either control her or destroy her, but first she must endure being Interred, as in being closed up in a casket, along with others who are “celebrating” their sixteenth birthday. These others have an advantage, they have always known who and what they are. They have trained and prepared for this day, and they know their role to play, but Baxter has had to take a sub-par crash course and learns she is a time bender, able to leap across time, at a price to her body and her lifeline. For Baxter, knowing who to trust and who not to trust is difficult as there are those who will stop at nothing to have her powers. Can she trust Declan, a boy trapped in a time loop, who can only been seen by her? Can she trust Jack, her guardian and healer?

Interred by Marilyn Almodovar, the first book in the Chronicles of the Interred is another priceless gem in that pile of all things shiny and new! From page one I was completely lost in the story, the concept, the characters and the presentation! Brilliant writing! Completely original thinking and characters that scream,”I’m real!” will jump off the pages and into your mind as each scene unfolds and pulls you into their world and into whatever time Baxter takes them! Ms. Almodovar has a hit here with a heroine that “must have the last word” and doesn’t apologize for it! The dialogue is fabulous, the teen angst is low, there is far too much at stake to dip into that pool! From the cover to the last page, I loved this book, this author’s style and these characters, villains and all! I look forward to the next book in the series! Ms. Almodovar has set the bar high for all paranormal YA reads!

I was fortunate to receive a review copy from the author and highly recommend this read to all ages!

Interred is a wonderful story and was a refreshing thing to read. I have to say that I have been reading a lot of paranormal stories but as everyone who knows me knows I love time travel stories and stories that have to do with time. Interred grabs you right from the beginning and keeps you sated till the end wanting more and needing more.

Interred is a story about a girl named Baxter who is turning 16 and when she does something magical will happen to her. But to her horror her mother never told her this so when the counsel comes in and talks to her she is shocked by what she learns. As she recovers she is then thrust into a world wind of chaos because two boys brothers each one wants something from her and she is not so sure she can deliver.

First Baxter has find out what it is that Jack and Declan want from her and then decide if she will do it. Jack is the sexy flirt and Declan is the bad boy broader but when it comes to helping Baxter is a natural helper and she will do whatever it takes to help them out. One will win her heart and the other will break it but in the end will it be worth it?

Can bending time really come with so much drama? What will Baxter do? What will Jack and Declan do? This is a must read story for all who love paranormal stories with a touch or romance!

I really wanted to love this book. It had a great premise and the plot seemed interesting. However, it fell a bit flat for me in terms of the writing. It felt rushed and it needed more description. This book probably didn't go through proper revision and there is major editorial work that needs to be done. It strikes me as a first draft that was published.

So I had a strong attraction to this book the minute I helped do the cover reveal and was convinced I saw the clock ticking. I have this weird love of clocks and fascination with time so I dove in head first into reading.

Wow…I adored this book. I found it to be really creative and kept me enthralled the entire time I was reading. Plus the dash of Harry Potter and Dr. Who references made me feel like Marilyn Almodovar was speaking to my inner geek.

Declan was such an interesting character. He started out by creeping me out, then I just didn’t trust him, then I started too really like him and then I didn’t trust him but still liked him anyway. I’m not sure what it is about him that makes me so drawn to him. I would love to learn more about his history and even maybe have a novella in his POV. I really want to get in his head and know what he is actually thinking. You can never be sure if he is just manipulating Baxter or if maybe there is more to it underneath.

I loved Baxter; she was such a normal down to earth character. I thought that she took things in stride and appreciated the things that she had. I loved the fact that her family and her have such a close relationship and that she really likes her stepdad. It wasn’t that scenario where he ignores her or isn’t really attached to her. It was nice to see two parents in a book, even if her biological father had passed away. I love how Baxter doesn’t back down from a good verbal battle, she is not the girl that becomes puddy in your hand. She has survival instincts.

Jack was likable and had a good mix of arrogance and good guy in him. He is definitely a character that I could consider for book boyfriend. He’s strong, doesn’t back down, fiercely loyal and not one to hold back a sarcastic comment.

I wouldn’t say there was a love triangle because in a way it really wasn’t and in another way it sort of was. I loved the banter between Declan and Jack, even though they weren’t even really talking to each other. They would make snide remarks to Baxter. It’s the first time I felt myself wanting both guys to be into the main girl. The chemistry between them was so entertaining to me.

I really felt the characters made this book. I loved that there was no clear cut good guys and bad guys. Everyone had some skeletons in their closets in different ways. I found myself wanting to know more about each of their back stories. Also none of the characters seemed to be off limits as far as tragedy and possible death. Even though it can be heartbreaking when we lose a character from a book, I love an author that is willing to sacrifice characters to give the story that edge of suspense. The plot was fast moving and engaging. I actually read it in a day and couldn’t get it out of my head, which is always a sign of a good book for me.

Interred is a tricky novel to classify. It’s YA, yes, and it involves magic, but I wouldn’t call it a story about witchcraft. Time manipulation is at play, but I wouldn’t necessarily call it a tale of time travel, either. In some ways it reminded me of the NBC series HEROES, especially the part about absorbing abilities from other magical beings – stealing them in a sense. *shivers*

One thing’s for certain, Marilyn Almodóvar has mad writing skills. Her language is all kinds of fun. I picked out a couple of sentences that particularly stood out to me:

'I help Mom put away the dry dishes in silence. For one, I don’t know if I can talk to her right now, and two, the vein in her forehead is about to give birth.' (Love!)

'I need to think, to grasp everything that has been going on, and to push fear down my throat and into my stomach where it can camp until I’m taken away for Interment.'

Baxter is a kick-ass heroine (and I love the name). She’s brave and sarcastic; kind to her younger siblings, mother, and even step-father; good to her friends; funny; and has some cool abilities that include bending time. I have to say I really like Baxter, her family, and friends.

Interred begins in picturesque Vermont during a snowstorm. The setup is eerie and you get the feeling that everything is about to change. Then it does when an estranged British relative, Fred, shows up at the front door and basically barges his way in.

I found all this intriguing, though admittedly it dragged on longer than I liked. (I wanted to get onto the Interment ball and ceremony!) Fred kept coming around to bicker with Baxter’s mom.
Meanwhile, Baxter carried on her own bickering with a character named Declan who only she can see.

I had trouble sorting out everything going on during the Interment and, as a result, zoned bits of it out. It’s this mass panic with so much happening at once and changing so rapidly I had trouble keeping up, although it did remind me in some ways of The Hunger Games with the fireballs exploding in the woods and other members of the Interment Ceremony turning on each other.

Almodóvar’s writing really shines once the family reaches England. After I finished the book I was not surprised to read that Lyn spent a decade in England and has a minor in English Victorian Literature.

Tragedy and betrayal befall Baxter in the end, but luckily there’s a silver lining in the form of the hunky, and also magically inclined, Jack Ashdown.

EEEP! I loved it. So interesting and tres unique! I loved the whole time-bending (*cough* Avatar *cough) aspect of it, because that genres always interesting to read about. Marilyn was able to weave suspense, intrigue, romance, and magic into one tale which will not be forgotten anytime soon.

Baxter was an amazing and kick-ass heroine who never bored me and who kept me turning the pages one after another with her amazing commentary ;) Seriously, she's sarcastically amazing, brave, strong, loyal, and everything in between! Reading from her POV was a fun ride. Although I do feel sorry that she got so much laid on her when she just turned sixteen. Sweet Sixteen? Sour Sixteen more like it (*snorts dorkily*). I don't think many girls would've been able to handle getting death threats, having murderer's chasing them, and being the reason why their friends and family are now targets, but Baxter is one hell of a girl so, of course, she's an exception to this rule! I'm not sure which one I'd choose...having awesome time-bending powers or have the suckiest sweet sixteen a girl could ever have?

Eeeep! Declan was my most favorite part of this story! Whenever he was around it's like sparkles shot out from the book, yes, that amazing. The whole being trapped in a time travel loop for 122 years made him all the more intriguing! Another thing I love about him is that he's said to be from Victorian London, which is one of my favorite era's! He's sweet, charming, funny, and I love the interactions between him and Baxter as she tries to save him from the loop he's stuck in. AND THEN ENTERS THE FRIGGIN' LOVE TRIANGLE. Jack Ashdown. SERIOUSLY. Why must author's make it so hard to choose in a love triangle! Both of these guys are (this might sound shallow, but...yah, it's shallow, whatever) HAWT. He's dangerous, and even more charming than his predecessor Declan, and he's funny....and witty...and YAH. You gotta love a guy that makes you laugh when you're supposed to cry ;) ALSO, if you do read this book, make sure the feelings you have for Jack are flexible...just saying!

All together, I really enjoyed the twisty and suspenseful ride this book was. There aren't enough books in the world these days about time-travel, and when an author decides to tackle this particular genre it always makes me happy, especially such a skilled author like Marilyn. Her writing is smoother than a baby's bottom and I couldn't get myself to stop at certain points! Intense and fun, two combinations which made up this wonderful book. I recommend...A LOT.

I received a review copy of Interred in return for an honest review as part of the blog tour hosted by YA Bound. Baxter’s sixteenth birthday is just around the corner quickly approaching, when a stranger shows up at her home. She learns that her mother has inherited a family home, and that she has inherited a pendent that holds a teenage boy trapped in a time loop. Declan has been locked in the time loop for over 122 years and he’s hoping that Baxter will be able to break his curse. Baxter also learns that magic beings do exist and she’s one of them just like her mom. Against her best judgment Baxter’s mom takes the family to long so that she can be Interred.

When they arrive in London Baxter quickly learns that on your sixteenth birthday everyone is Interred where they test your powers and you come into your full powers. Baxter learns that she’s a time bender very rare a gift it’s also why she can see Declan and no one else can. She learns that Declan has agreed to help her pass her interred with the hopes that after she will be able to free him from the loop. On the night of her sixteenth birthday she’s taken with the others to be Interred but it’s nothing like she could have imagined. Everything goes crazy, she runs for her life with Jack a warrior healer who she has a connection with. With his help and Declan’s she will be tested unlike anything she can imagine pushing her to limits. Then when she thinks it’s over she learns that her whole life has been turned upside down to the point she won’t be able to go back. Will Baxter be able to save the day?

I love Interred. The concept is very unique and interesting it’s a new twist on witches very refreshing. I think Baxter is a great character she’s very real which makes her easy to connect with. Baxter has two potential love interests in Interred one who’s stuck in the time loop and one she’s connected with because he’s a healer. I had a hard time rooting for either one because I kept expecting them to turn on her. The story is well written it flows along smoothly, however when the Interred started things got a little confusing but that’s because so much was going on. I like that it’s a clean book which makes it appropriate for teens as well as adults to enjoy. Interred is an action packed adventure filled with mystery a little romance and whole lot of magic. I found the story so captivating I had a hard time putting the book down I just had to know what was going to happen to Baxter next. I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen in the next book.

Baxter is spunky, stubborn, sarcastic and loyal. She also as an inner strength that is tested to the limit time and time again. Her world is turned upside down as she approaches her sixteenth birthday. Her Mums cousin from England turns up uninvited and all but barges his way into their house he brings with him a box containing an onyx necklace with the name Declan engraved. Through Fred Baxter learns that she is not a normal teenager after all and she doesn’t come from a normal family. She comes from a family of magical beings and Baxter is a time bender, a unique power to have and one that is coveted by many. She will have to learn to master her ability to save herself from those that will do anything and hurt anyone to get it.

Amongst all this there is Declan. Declan has been trapped in a time loop for a hundred and twenty two years and only Baxter can see him. He promises to help her through her Interment and protect her all he wants in return is to be freed from his time loop prison.
Declan is arrogant yet charming from the Victorian era a lethal combination if you ask me and totally had me swooning.

And least we not forget Jack… Mmm Jack…. Forgive me I was day dreaming there for a moment Jack was totally swoon worthy and easily made it into my top ten swoonable book hotties. Jack is funny, sweet and easily a match for Baxter and will do whatever he can to protect her and did I mention he is HOT!

Despite Declan and Jack been relatives and even though Jack cannot see Declan they dislike each other and so we find ourselves deciding who’s side to be on. Which one of these hot guys should we trust? Both have sworn to protect Baxter and both want to help her in her interment.

I wouldn’t call this a love triangle as I think it’s clear where Baxter’s heart lies but she does find it difficult when Jack and Declan just can’t agree on anything. I often wished I could bang their heads together. lol

This book as everything I love, a kick ass heroine, hot guys Magic and a twist at the end I never saw coming that changed my perspective on the entire book and left me all the more eager for book two.

I loved the popular culture references, I must admit to doing a fan girl dance whenever there was a doctor who mention or references *Doctor Who geek*

Interred definitely has an interesting premise, as far as the time-travel aspect goes. While the majority of YA books contain paranormal elements and/or creatures, Interred differs from the rest in that it doesn’t contain vampires, werewolves, or witches, and there isn’t a love triangle. It does, however, contain magic.

Baxter Jacobs’ life quickly goes from normal to totally screwed in no time at all. She inherits a pendant, which contains the soul of a boy named Declan. Only Baxter can see him, and only Baxter can set him free. The more Baxter learns about her time-travel abilities, however, the more she realizes there’s nothing fun about them. It won’t be long before she has to put her abilities to the test in the Interment—a test for those who are coming into their powers. But when the Interment goes awry and she’s hunted solely for the purpose of death, who can she trust? How will she ever be able to set Declan free?

Overall, there were highs and lows in this book. Many scenes featured non-stop action, and other areas slacked in that department—so much so, I skimmed over several portions of the story. The book is well-written, though, and Marilyn did a great job with the eclectic settings. There’s a hint of a love triangle that never happens, and as far as a romance aspect in this series, I’m hoping there will be more in the sequel. I also got a bit confused about the names of each person who had a unique ability. There were Time Benders, Healers, Warriors…but that’s all I remember. So if you’re looking for a story with a paranormal side, or if you enjoy books regarding time-travel and magic, then I’d recommend picking this up.

This was a book that you definitely have to keep reading in order to get fully invested in the plot and characters. To be honest, the beginning wasn’t really holding my interest and I may not have kept reading if I wasn’t part of the blog tour. I’m really glad I gave it a full read though because the second half was much better than the first.

I loved Baxter from the get-go. I liked her relationship with her family and her inner thoughts were laced with humor. She comes across as an everyday girl with the very unique ability to control time. I thought the author did a good job of painting a picture of a normal girl thrust into a supernatural world she didn’t know existed.

The beginning of the book was slow. Nothing really started happening until I reached about forty percent of the book. The first half was her finding out her destiny and then having to deal with a temperamental spirit named Declan. Declan was hard to get a read on which made him an intriguing character.

It was an abrupt change of pace after Baxter and her family arrived in England. As part of a testing process of her magical abilities, Baxter and the other Interred are put in a Hunger Games like scenario where they have to survive magical attacks. I was a little confused at times over what was going on, but I liked the action sequences.

I loved Baxter’s interactions with the romantic interests of the book: Declan and Jack. Their characters were very entertaining and I kept guessing at their motivations. The book does have some twists that I was surprised about and made it worth the read.

Thanks to the author and YA Bound for a copy of this novel for the Interred Book Tour!

Interred centers around a typical teenage girl named Baxter. Except, as she approaches the age of sixteen, Baxter finds out that she’s not so typical. When a relative from across the pond visits and informs her of her magical abilities, Baxter is thrust into a world full of those who want to use her time-bending abilities for their own gain. Baxter also learns that as a ‘welcome’ into the magical community, she will have to spend her sixteenth birthday in a not-so-pleasant way. To get through it all, Baxter relies on two equally alluring boys, Declan and Jack. But who can she trust?

Interred was a fabulous novel. Although the characters had magical abilities, the novel was set in our own world, making it very easy to imagine the scene and connect with the characters. The characters were easy to connect with right away, but as layers of the story unfolded, an even deeper understanding of the characters was gained. I liked that the story wasn’t predictable and had a few plot twists. The humorous nature and pop culture references were also aspects that were a big hit with me. I thoroughly enjoyed the plot and am eagerly awaiting the next novel.

I am excited to be among the first readers and reviewers of Interred. When I first read the blurb I was intrigued by the concept, and Almodovar didn't disappoint. Her writing is flawless, and the story flowed perfectly. Baxter is a realistic teen, not perfect, and full of emotions and unbalanced feelings. Her whole world is turned upside down and I think her reactions throughout are typical of a sixteen year old. I loved the male characters as well, particularly Jack. The plot thickened throughout the story and the ending was a terrific twist. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

INTERRED, for me, is a hard book to rate. There's parts of the book that I absolutely fell in love with, while other parts, namely the romance, fell a bit short. Overall, I'm settling with a rating of 3 or 3.25.

INTERRED follows the journey of a girl named Baxter Jacobs, who has the ability to “bend” time, as well as other mystical skills. As a heroine, Baxter was smart and strong, but most of all, snarky. This is just my personal taste speaking, but for a heroine or hero to really stand out to me, she or he has to be more than just “kick-ass”. In Baxter’s case, her voice kept me engaged to the story, since she made tons of funny remarks, even if they were made in the most inappropriate of times, which did make her stand out to me a bit. As a teenager, her relationships with her family and general personality also helped to connect me to her character. If you’re the type of person who loves to follow the adventure of a fighting, snarling, kick-ass heroine, this book might be for you!

I also liked how the magic system was presented. It featured a bit of everything – witches, spells, potions, healers, time travel, etc. – but also presented a system of Warriors/Healers & Time Benders, as well as rituals. As soon as Baxter’s family arrived in England, I found that I was completely engrossed in learning what exactly the Interred dealt with, getting familiarized with the different Families, and about the craft of their magic. Throughout the book, you get to explore different lands, time periods, coffins, castles, and balls – just so much fun!

However, I have to admit though that the romance threw me off a bit :/ For one, comparing the two boys made me realize that the two were actually very alike: both cocky, handsome, dark, and strong, but always in a position to help Baxter; they were even from the same Family! It also seemed like during the story, Baxter would have a romantic moment with one boy, then suddenly switch to the other, then back again, etc. Personally I’m not a HUGE romance fan unless the relationship tears me apart or makes me EXTREMELY fuzzy-feeling, so paranormal romance or romance fans might enjoy the relationship instead.

As for the plot, it was slow in the beginning, but eventually built a lot of suspense and twists! Before the ball and “battle” begins, I felt like there was a large amount of time placed on building characters, instead of the plot. Usually, this is fine with me, but when some of the characters died, it didn’t seem like Baxter spent a lot of time mourning them, so it was as if the time building those characters went to waste. However, when the action begins, it never stops. After the ball, you face battle after battle after conflict after whatever, at a breakneck pace. There are also two twists in the end, one that seemed a bit more obvious to me, the other a bit less obvious. As a whole though, the combination of the plot and Baxter’s voice entertained me!

Overall, INTERRED was an enjoyable time travel adventure, featuring a good amount of twists, action, magic, and romance. Combined with the author’s fluid writing style and hilarious voice, readers looking for a fun but quick fantasy read, or fans of paranormal romance would probably enjoy this book!

My Review:
If I was to describe Interred, I would describe it as an original story filled with intrigue, drama, and magic. This book has a really great cast of characters, great world building, romance and the writing in it is very fluid. Marilyn Almodóvar really has a way with words because it was really easy to get into the story and I thought the dialogue between the characters was top notch.

On to the world building in this book. I really loved it. I thought it was sophisticated and intricate and I loved that it was centered around magic, since the heroine in this novel is a time bender. It reminded me of books like Harry Potter and the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare in the sense that, like in those novels, humans are completely unaware of this magical/fantasy world that surrounds them with it's own set of rules, hierarchy of power, and intricate family dynamics. Though, there is quite a difference. The people who run everything - the council- in the magical world in Interred are a bit more sinister than the ones you find in the Harry Potter books, for example. Their tests and trials for their young magical beings are on the dark side and dare I say it, slightly morbid side as well. Coffins, anyone? - Yep. Those were mentioned in the story and not the neat ones that used to keep Dracula's body hidden from the world in older vampire novels back in the day.

Interred as a whole, is focused on Baxter. Our female lead who gets her magical powers once she turns sixteen. First off, can I say that I am really loving that name. Really original. And secondly, I would say that Baxter lives up to the awesomeness of her name. She is a heroine that is feisty, sarcastic, and committed to doing the right thing and being loyal to friends and family. Her inner dialogue was really funny and she was just a kickass character in general. Though, she was confronted with odd situations and people, she remained as level headed as possible and determined to overcome obstacles.

The romance in the story was cute. It almost had a love triangle feel to it. Almost. I kinda felt that Baxter, our female lead, had more feelings for one of her love interests because she did have two of them. Declan and Jack. Both very charming and smart, but one darker than the other (Declan). He can hardly be blamed for it, though. That inner fury that he has bubbling under the surface is a result of having been trapped in a pendant for over 100 years or so. Poor guy. He definitely had a lot of charm and he was Victorian and English. Gotta love those guy characters with British accents. [insert wink].

Overall, I would say that Interred was definitely a fun novel. Fun in the sense that it is shrouded in mystery due to the magical setting it takes place in and the deeply complicated family dynamics. Oh, yes, because there is a lot of that. The author decided to make the family and the ancestors of the main character, central to the development of the story. Something that was great, because usually the family of the main characters in young adult novels are not too present; especially in a fantastical settings, so kudos to the author for including them.

Interred by Marilyn Almodóvar
Book #1: Chronicles of the Interred
Source: Purchase
Rating: 4½/5 stars

The eve of every kid’s sixteenth birthday should be a magical time; there should be nerves about driving solo, excitement over the party and, no cares in the world. Never should a kid on the cusp of such a huge milestone have to be worried about being buried alive and hoping her magical powers will be enough to get her out alive. Yeah, no one should have that crap on their agenda. 

Baxter is a different sort of 16-year-old. Though she didn’t know it until her mother could no longer hide the truth, Baxter is a magical being from a long, long line of magical beings and she has the very unique and coveted ability of Time Bending. She also has a ghost by the name of Declan who is at once hateful, snide, sad, funny, caring and, completely untrustworthy. After being forced to spill the beans about her daughter’s abilities and what comes next, the family packs up and moves to England so Baxter can participate in the Interment – a magical beings rite of passage that every 16-year-old must go through. Essentially, Baxter’s powers will manifest on the night of her 16th birthday and she will be able to work her way out of the coffin with Declan’s (yeah, the untrustworthy one) guidance and her newfound powers. According to everyone, including her lying, deceiving mother the Internment has gone off without a hitch for centuries and Baxter’s will do so as well.

If things were as simple as being buried alive and getting out, Baxter would have no worries at all. Things just aren’t that simple and here’s her list of worries: Declan wants something from Baxter that no one else has ever been able to accomplish, her mother hid not just her powers but an entire family and history from her, as a Time Bender, Baxter is assigned a Healer and hers happens to be way too cute for words and from a rival family, her power is highly coveted and, she is about to be buried alive. I really can’t get past that whole buried alive bit, can I? As you might well expect, the night of the Interment is anything but smooth and in fact, all hell breaks loose. Baxter’s powers are put to the ultimate test, her level of loyalty and trustworthiness is tested beyond reason and, she is forced to act in ways she never thought possible just to stay alive.

The Bottom Line: Holy cats what an intense and exciting read!! Though Interred starts out a bit slowly and does have some slow parts throughout, the action and plot are super intense and the slow moments sort of give everyone – characters and reader alike – a moment to breathe and regroup. There is a lot of information in this read and I often found myself feeling a bit like Baxter, completely overwhelmed by everything but willing to go with the flow. Baxter is the strength of this read and with everything she goes through and has thrown at her, it is often hard to remember that she is just sixteen. The magical world, the abilities of the magical beings and, the crazy twists and turns in the plot made this read not only fascinating but entirely enjoyable.

This book was so fun to read and imagine. Interred was a great escape from reality with enough twists and turns to keep me guessing. This book is very intriguing and comes complete with a heirloom ghost. This book is great combination of fantasy, time bending, magic, and romance in a nice YA package.

Meet Baxter, a soon to be 16 year old girl whose life is about to take a dramatic turn for the weird. Her pregnant mother is approached by a cousin who announces that a distant relative has died. She inherits a house in England, and her daughter inherits the magical gifts of the family. Baxter’s new gifts include Time Bending and a spirit named Declan that is bound to her. Oh and she gets a healer named Jack as a partner. Baxter just has to go to this “ball”, get interred, and then live through the tests. No big deal, right? Buckle up readers, this is a bumpy ride!

The cover for this book tells so much of the story. I fell right into this story. Once I pick a book for review, I don’t refer back to the synopsis to remind myself what it is about. I prefer to trust my prior judgement and be surprised. I picked a winner in this series. Interred is the first book in The Chronicles of the Interred, Fissure is next book and that review is coming on Tuesday. I loved the action. I loved the shifting from time line to time line. I loved that she gets a healer to escort her. He is bound to her as much as she is to him. Baxter is an outsider at the ball. Everyone wants to get to know her or kill her for the powers she possesses. She has a lot of catching up to do, so she spends a lot of time reading about the family histories and getting info from Declan. Declan is this ghost spirit that was trapped by her ancestor for protection. His job is to guide Baxter to a place where she is able to release him. His motive is clear throughout the story. Jack’s job is to heal her after they travel through time. This book takes us back in time giving us clues into family motivation. Then it plunges back into the time of the interment.

The only thing I can complain about in this story is that when the time travel starts happening, it gets a bit confusing. I listened to part of this book and I needed to go back to figure out when we were at a few times. I think just straight reading it might not have been such a problem for me, but I am a multitasking fool. Also, I didn’t like some of the loss in this book. Like most YA books, we deal with some heavy issues. I just kept thinking poor Baxter, and poor Jack. I felt that these issues weren’t dealt with adequately. I am hoping some of the issues of loss are resolved in the next book. (she is a time bender, after all) I guess we’ll see.

Baxter is a really resilient girl. It was cool learning all about her abilities right along with her. This world doesn’t follow all the typical time bending rules. Baxter meets up with key players in the distant past and alters things in her world. I am so excited about this story and eager to get to the next in this series. This book ends on a twist. I have so many unanswered questions and this book ends on a cliff. I am hanging on tight.

MY REVIEW

Interred followed the story of Baxter, a young woman who discovers that she has an incredible destiny to fulfill. Baxter discovers that she has powers and has been chosen as one of the Interred, which is a ceremony that she and several other selected young people are chosen to participate.

The Chosen are selected to go through a ritualized burying, on the night of their Interred ceremony, they are to find their way out and attempt to make it back to a designated location; although along the way, they would be tested and would need to use their special abilities to survive these test. Baxter along with Declan, a mysterious young man that had been trapped in a time loop, by Baxter’s ancestor, and wants desperately to help her escape, to past these test.Because in doing so, his freedom would be assured at the end. A tentative friendship blossoms, between Baxter and Declan but becomes strained, when Declan’s great nephrew, his descendant Jack AshDown, tells Baxter that he is supposed to help her, that he is link to her as a healer.

So he comes along, and before long Baxter finds herself attracted to Jack. The night of the Interred Baxter, and Jack escapes the burial and begins a journey, but soon things does not go as plan, when Baxter, and Jack discover that their lives are very much in danger and that this is no longer a game. Baxter and friends go on a harrowing journey across time that ends with a breath taking betrayal and a stunning ending!

This debut novel from Marilyn Almodovar was outstanding. This was a fresh, and unique twist on the paranormal saga. A very refreshing change, Interred combined elements of the paranormal and the dystopian genres. It had passion, adventure and suspense! The reader is sucked into this grand adventure; I enjoyed the relationship between Baxter and Declan as well as Baxter and Jack… I most enjoyed the new plotline, enjoying the discovery of this new world and its rituals and the players of the Interred. I fully loved this book and recommend it for anyone who enjoys paranormal, with a little dystopian flavor. Interred is akin to the Hunger Games meet Beautiful Creatures!

A Must Read:O)

Personally this book felt like the very first completed novel by the author, that they will look back on in ten years and think 'what on earth made me publish that.' That's not to say the book was bad, it just needed polishing in terms of the writing and the style.

"epic fail" Really? realllly? Honestly this just sounded cringy like you have a teenage daughter who you've heard say it and then included it in the book to sound 'down with the kids'

The whole opening of this book read like a first draft. It was very rushed and tbh just plain unrealistic. The characters at the beginning of the book really felt underdeveloped. The whole unrealistic element came back in to play later in the book when *******SPOILERS AHEAD*************** their parents died. This should have been the crumbling of their entire worlds not 'oh hey look my whole family is dead, that sucks, and moving on.'
Yeah they might be on the run from the big bad but surely this should be a massive low of the book where all hope is gone and capture doesn't matter because everything your fighting for is dead anyway. Then later would come the I must fight for my family's honour epifiny.

The writing needed to be much clearer for me, especially in a book like this which plays about with time. It felt like the author had pictured the scene in her head but just failed to get it fully on to paper. I often had to re-read pages just to understand what was going on.

Now this criticism might just be me but I thought there were too many characters with names starting with 'D', I especially thought this was confusing with the beginning as rushed as it was, I often mixed up the stepdad and the brother.

The premise of the book was there but the writing style and character development just wasn't there to support it.

Well, I am just going to have to come right out and say it. This book sort of blew my mind. First off, the names of the characters were totally freaking awesome. Baxter and Declan? Jack's name isn't awesome, but I can forgive him, because he is awesome. I love the name Declan. I know, irrelevant, but still. moving on.

The whole concept that the kids come into their supernatural powers at sixteen is really interesting. I mean, they are just automatically gifted with these amazing powers, that they have no way of predicting what they are going to be.
Concept of a hot guy with a cool name being trapped in time and Baxter is the only person who can see him because she can bend time. OMG, YES! That was totally awesome and excellent creativity on the author's part.

I do not want to go into too much detail about the boys, Declan and Jack, because I am afraid of going on forever, but whew. It is kind of cruel to trap a girl between a guy and his ancestor. haha. I mean it is like having a guy interested in you and also having his grandpa interested in you! I am just saying. but I loved both the guys for separate reasons.

I though it was remarkable being her first work. Everything about the book is attractive: Cover (love, love, love the cover), the concept, and the names. I was drawn in by all of those factors and the promise of a good magical read and i was not disappointed. I cannot wait to see what happens to the trio in the next book in the series.

Also, a side note: her mother is kind of awesome. Just thought I would throw that in there. (:

Highly Enjoyed as a book for a younger audience and a recommended read

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

First of all, I was glad to read a book with two actual involved parents in it. I've been seeing a lot of single parent books and quite a few that just don't mention where the heck the other parent is. Yes, it is a step-parent, but the main character likes him, so it's all good.

Baxter is a teenage girl, pretty normal, acts 'real'. She finds out right before her 16th birthday that she needs to attend a ceremony to be Interred, because her mom's been hiding the fact that she'll receive magical powers at age 16.

I was completely irritated that Baxter's mom and her cousin Fred argued all the time. I just didn't care about their arguments after the first two times Fred came around.

Declan is a boy from Victorian England that's been trapped in a time loop for 122 years. He's hoping that if he helps Baxter through being Interred, that she'll help him escape. He's snarky and mysterious, but also nice at times. I went between liking him and being suspicious of him.

Jack is a relative of Declan's. He's also going through being Interred with Baxter. It's hard to say whether Baxter should be close to him or not. He's great, but is he using Baxter for her talents?

Bonus? Doctor Who references!

The writing is the best part. It flows nicely and things are described in a wonderful way. It did take a bit to get to the action, the first bit got a little boring, but when the action started...BAM!!!! Away we went!

As Baxter Jacobs get close to her 16th birthday, strange things start happening. Her mother's cousin visits from England with news of her grandmother's passing, and news of inheritance. As if meeting a relative she's never heard of wasn't strange enough, Baxter also sees a boy whom no one else can see, a boy she's seen once before, at her grandfather’s funeral.

The boy turns out to be a magical spirit, trapped in a loophole of time and tied to her family. Baxter is both drawn to him and repulsed by him, not sure of his true intentions.

Her family travels to England, where Baxter delves deeper into this world her mother once belonged to, and finds out her family legacy is a magical bloodline, part of an ancient race of beings who live alongside normal humans but wield different forms of magic. A coming of age ceremony will determine who wields certain gifts, and who is strong enough to survive the transition to adulthood.

If you enjoy magical time travel in an older YA story, this book makes for fun, fast reading. (I’m a huge time travel fan, so this was right up my alley.) It's not always clear who is good and who is evil, but you keep rooting for the heroine to figure out the twists before it’s too late.

The first of a series, the second book FISSURE came out earlier this year, so even though the book ends with unresolved cliffhangers, book two is available. And already in my beach bag.

22 may ReviewWhen I saw the cover of this first book, I was curious to know what was hiding those hands and that clock , without doubt, the story behind this cover is very good.

It is a magical world and a well made, original story , with good characters actors , filled with many emotions and a clear and light writing.

The magic is present and will hand our protagonist Baxter , Our female protagonist, who gets her magical powers she turns sixteen eleven . Is determined and has a good grasp of sarcasm . And his way in this saga is about to begin , is a strong main character and very well run . You win from the start.

Besides the adventure behind the magic of Baxter, will be Declan and Jack. They will be willing to care for or want something more with Baxter, and time differently , and of course way into history.

I like the way that has story , is very imaginative , full of other fun moments of excitement and others with unexpected turns , that includes the end. It has a unique and distinctive style .

A Copy of this Book Was Given To Me By The Author In Exchange For An Honest Review*

The author has taken an original idea, formulated her own set of rules for the world she is writing about and then stuck to them. For those of you who do not write take it from me – that is a very hard thing to do. The story is hard to classify. It’s Young Adult; it has a love story; it’s about time travel, but is not the usual time travel sort of story; it’s about magic but not what you would expect. In fact in my experience it is unique and you will have to read it to understand.
Do read the synopsis first as this will give you an idea, then just enjoy!
Even three quarters of the way through it you will still not be sure who are the villains and who the good guys, but please persevere – it’s worth it and when you reach the conclusion you will look forward to the next installment of the saga.

This one was actually better than expected. I don't usually enjoy first person PRESENT tense, but I did enjoy this one. Present tense isn't for everyone so do be aware of it going in. This book is about a girl named Baxter on the cusp of 16 who finds out her mother has been lying to her about her entire life. She is a magical being who when she turns 16, will be "Interred" in order to discover/learn to control/develop her magical abilities. Through this ordeal she has a familiar named Declan and a mysterious warrior named Jack to sort of watch over her. It's a common story in the Urban Fantasy genre, but it was done well. The set up takes a while, and by the time the action starts it's like "WOO HOO! FINALLY!" But the overall book was good. I would recommend this series, and am excited to start the second one soon.

I received this book from the author in a giveaway and all I have to say is that if I hadn't gotten it from there I would've gone out to buy it. I loved the story it wasn't like all the other types of stories I've read about time travel. I loved the characters especially Declan, Baxter and Dickie. They were all fun and I enjoyed it when Declan and Baxter got into it, it showed the many differences about them. The only part I didn't like about this book was the mom in the beginning she was very all over the place making me confused about how she really felt.

Really enjoyed this.I won this from a Goodreads giveaway :)
It's not a standard "we have magic powers, yay" type of story line, which was great.
They have certain abilities, and some other abilities still to form, but they can't just do anything.

The characters were great, and the development of them was well timed.
I'm really looking forward to the next installment and finding out more about the two main characters and more about Declan :)

*I won a copy of Interred from Goodreads' first reads.
This was a great book! I love the paranormal YA genre, and Interred was definitely one of the best I've read in a while. Plus, Baxter is a strong, likeable, non-whiny heroine (which, as we all know, is something rare nowadays.)
Also, I'm a huge geek and there was references to geek fandoms, so I'm happy :3
