In the only major book of its kind that comprehensively covers music law in the UK, here are fascinating studies of cases involving some of the greatest British stars, including Elton John, Robbie Williams and George Michael. And although the focus may be the UK, this book is fascinating, essential reading to everyone who wants to be in the music business - and everyone already there. From bedroom demo to arena tour, the impact and the potential pitfalls of new media and the Internet, this book tells you everything you need to know about protecting your rights and maximise your earnning. It is the definitive guide to the music industry - by a lawyer who's been in the business for over 15 years. This is the only book of it's kind specifically about the music law in the UK. It includes everything a young person making his or her way in the record business needs to know. The author, Ann Harrison, is a practising media lawyer since 1983 and has unparalled credability.
Ann Harrison is a Partner at SSB Solicitors Limited, a leading boutique law firm that specializes in Music Law. She is a highly experienced lawyer who is well known across the music industry and regarded as expert in all aspects of music business contracts, copyright, protection of rights, et al. Great guide to the music industry, the writing is a little bit dry and difficult to understand at times (for non legalese fluent people like me at least) but it is to be expected as it is mostly regarding laws and regulations but it sets out a great overview of the music industry in the UK especially.
This book is definitely worth reading through! The topics covered in this book can help beginners understand the basics of music business or refresh business concepts for professionals.
4.5 stars. Phenomenal guide for anyone wanting to enter the music business. I just wish it was written in an even more accessible manner as at times you get lost in the complexities of the UK law.
This book could be considered the UK-based companion to Passman’s ‘All You Need to Know About the Music Business’. The author of this book is a lawyer, specialising in music and entertainment law, and has knowledge and experience. Constant updates in new editions mean the cases and laws examined are relevant. Highly recommended.
